• You need to know how plate tectonics cause volcanoes, earthquakes and mountains to form
• https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kg_UBLFUpYQ
![Page 3: Earthquakes L.O: explain how movement of these plates cause a variety of processes to occur.](https://reader034.fdocuments.in/reader034/viewer/2022042611/5a4d1ae87f8b9ab059979b95/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
Describe how the following geological processes are caused by the movement of tectonic plates:
• 1. Volcanoes (plate boundary, movement apart,
magma erupting, lava flow)2. Earthquakes (plate boundary, sliding, focus,
epicentre, seismic waves,)3. Mountain building (subduction – oceanic plate,
continental plate, new mamga formed, new mountain formed)
- You can include diagrams

Earthquakes
• Caused by plates sliding past each other• Produces wave motion on surface and inside of
Earth• Movement of energy through a substance (no
transfer of matter)• Use a seismograph to collect data on earthquakes• P-waves detected first – primary wave (faster)• S-waves detected secondly – secondary wave
(slower)
![Page 5: Earthquakes L.O: explain how movement of these plates cause a variety of processes to occur.](https://reader034.fdocuments.in/reader034/viewer/2022042611/5a4d1ae87f8b9ab059979b95/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
P-waves
• Longitudinal • Areas of compression of matter• Travel through solids and liquids• Travel faster and are detected first
![Page 6: Earthquakes L.O: explain how movement of these plates cause a variety of processes to occur.](https://reader034.fdocuments.in/reader034/viewer/2022042611/5a4d1ae87f8b9ab059979b95/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
LONGITUDINAL WAVES
Make a longitudinal wave using a spring between two people like this :
What type of energy is the wave transferring?
In which direction is the energy moving?
In which direction is each part of the spring moving?
kinetic

In longitudinal waves the vibrations are along the same direction as the wave is travelling
particle movement
energy movement
When you speak to someone, the air vibrates as a longitudinal wave :

S-waves
• Transverse• Waves travel at right angles• Travels through solids only• Travel slower and are detected second
![Page 9: Earthquakes L.O: explain how movement of these plates cause a variety of processes to occur.](https://reader034.fdocuments.in/reader034/viewer/2022042611/5a4d1ae87f8b9ab059979b95/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)

Test yourself – answer the following grade C questions!!
1. Which type of wave will reach a destination first; a p-wave or s-wave?
2. Which wave type is (a) longitudinal (b) transverse?3. What causes an earthquake?4. What moves through the Earth’s solid matter?5. What type of wave travels through (a) solids (b) solids

Answers
1. P-wave arrives first2. (a) p-wave is longitudinal (b) s-wave is transverse3. Plates sliding past each other causes an earthquake4. Energy moves through the Earth’s solid matter5. (a) s-waves travel through solids (b) p-waves travel
through solids and liquids6. A longitudinal p-wave has areas of compression7. A transverse s-wave travels at right angles to the
direction of movement

Seismic waves
Waves within a layer change direction gradually because there is a gradual change in density, causing a gradual change in direction (refraction).
At a layer boundary there is a big change in direction because there is a big change in density between layers, therefore a big refraction and change in speed.
S wave shadow only p waves received here

What can the movement of s and p-waves tell us about the structure of the Earth?
• Size of core, mantle, crust• Core is liquid as no s-waves can travel through
it• Mantle is solid as s-waves do travel through it• Refraction of p-waves indicates a liquid outer
core and solid inner core

Waves : Frequency
The number of waves passing a point each second is called FREQUENCY [ƒ]
Frequency [ƒ] is measured in hertz [Hz]
Frequency [ƒ] = Number of waves passed Time [s]
1 wave per second = 1 Hz
If the wave below passes a point in 1 second, what is it’s frequency?

Wave equation
• Frequency = number of waves that pass a point each second
• Wave speed = speed at which the wave moves• Can calculate the speed a wave is moving by:• Speed = frequency x wavelength• Can calculate the distance a wave moves with the
following equation:• Distance = speed x time• At a constant wave speed, the wavelength of a wave is
inversely proportional to the frequency
![Page 21: Earthquakes L.O: explain how movement of these plates cause a variety of processes to occur.](https://reader034.fdocuments.in/reader034/viewer/2022042611/5a4d1ae87f8b9ab059979b95/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
Equations you need!!
Speed = frequency x wavelength
Distance = speed x time

• Eva is building a sandcastle. She estimates that 1 wave passes her sandcastle every 2 seconds, and that the crests of the waves are 90 cm apart.
• Calculate the speed, in metres per second, of the waves passing Eva’s sandcastle
• O.5 Hz x 0.9 m = 0.45 m/s
