Earth Day Sunday Celebration — April 24th “The earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it, the world, and those who live in it.”

— Psalm 24:1

In celebration of Earth Day and in honor of our Creator we will be doing things a bit differently this Sunday. First of all we encourage those who are able to walk, ride or carpool to worship. We will also be serving Fair Trade Coffee and invite you to bring your own coffee mug so we can avoid using Styrofoam. “The glory that you have given me I have given them, so that they may be one, as we are one, I in them and you in me, that they may become completely one,

so that the world may know that you have sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.” – John 17:22-23

WE ARE ONE—There is deep division in our nation and world. Maybe it is magnified during this election season. Presidential candidates have a way of polarizing people. But division runs deeper than politics. We are also being divided by religious belief and practice (not to mention those with no religious beliefs)…by race…by economics…by nation…by language…by culture…by age. While not an exhaustive list, you get the idea. There is much that divides us. Perhaps that is why Jesus’ prayer in John 17 is so striking to me. He prays for our unity, seemingly believing that in our unity we will send a message to the world. As I write this we are hosting the Ugandan Kids Choir here at the church for a few days. There are ten kids between the ages of six and twelve touring the United States to raise awareness and money for the many Ugandan children in need back in their homeland. And while on the surface there are many things that would divide us, through our shared faith in Jesus “we are one.” It is a beautiful thing to see our children interact with these Ugandan children. There are so many differences…skin color, language, education, family (or lack thereof), a place to call home…but through a shared love of God in Jesus “we are one”…and it shows. There is a delight, a joy, a laughter, a joining of hands and hearts that wouldn’t happen in any other way. Dividing walls are broken down and a genuine bond is formed. We are reminded that what unites us is far greater than what divides us. That matters…not only to us, but to the world. So may God be honored and God’s love be made manifest as we find ways to live into Jesus’ desire and prayer that “we are one.” And a child shall lead them… Brian

Have you “checked out” our church’s lending library? Just past the restrooms at the east end of the hallway, make a right turn and you will arrive in the Rhoda Kruse Library. A 3-ring binder lists ALL books by TITLE and AUTHOR. Write

your name and the book you want to check out. When done with your reading, return your book to the CRATE marked for RETURNS and cross out your name in the binder. Happy reading!!

will be hosting their annual

May Friendship Day at Christ Lutheran Church, 4761 Cass St., 92109 on Friday, May 6th, at 10:00am. This year’s theme is entitled “Finding Grace at the Table” and will include a time of worship, sharing and fellowship that includes lunch ($8.00). For registration information, call LaNoel at (619) 507-9430 by April 29th.

We had so much fun last month we are getting back out on the field this Sunday, April 24th, beginning at 3pm at the PB Recreation Center. Men and women, young and old, skilled or unskilled...all are welcome to join us for an afternoon of fun and fellowship and softball. Bring your gloves, bats, sunscreen and get ready to “play ball”!

CWU Friendship Day

Sunday, May 22nd, is Pentecost Sunday, the day we celebrate the gift of God’s Holy Spirit upon the church (Acts 2). We would like to continue our tradition of having the children and youth run through the sanctuary waving yellow,

orange and red streamers during the opening song commemorating the Holy Spirit coming down like the rush of a mighty wind and in the form of tongues of fire over the disciples’ heads. So, parents, we would appreciate it if you could have your kids here a few minutes early so we can give them instructions. Thank you! We would also like to publicly recognize and thank many of you who volunteer to serve in support of Sunday services that are often done behind the scenes as a part of our Pentecost celebration. So please try to join us. Thank you! This year’s Pentecost Special Offering will be given in support of the development of new congregations and much more. We invite you to use the special offering envelopes available in worship in support of the larger Church of which we are a part.

Don’t miss an opportunity to help sponsor a Hunger Walk walker from PBCC. You can also donate by including it with your Sunday giving. Here are two other, relatively painless, ways you can help CCSA: 1) If you dine at Chili’s in Clairemont, you can save your receipt and give it to Lucie Sovinsky or directly to either CCSA offices. CCSA receives 15% of the total. 2) If you shop at Amazon Smile, you can mention CCSA and they will give a percentage of your purchase price which allows CCSA to purchase items from their wish list.

Tijuana House Build

Church of the Valley and FCC Burbank have invited us to join them for another Tijuana House Build through Project Mercy on Saturday, May 21st. We will meet at the church at 6:30am and carpool to the border where we will meet the rest of the group at 7:30am. We will return to PBCC later that evening. Both skilled and unskilled builders are welcome, so please sign up on the bulletin board if you would like to join us! And remember, passports are required!

CCSA

Ugandan Kids Choir

Our thanks to Janice Calabrese and Marilyn Zanchetta for partnering to coordinate the choir’s concert and stay this week. We are also grateful to the Zanchettas, Hernandezes and Ambroses for housing the kids while here in Pacific Beach. The kids had a wonderful time experiencing the beach for the first time, including boogey boarding with Casey Smith, Darian Conard and Clint Woodward. And thanks to the generosity of so many we were able to give a gift of over $1,400 to the group, sponsor several children, provide the directors massages (thank you Kristen Luther and Susan Linder), chiropractic (thank you Libbs), a doctor (thank you Howard Smart) and food aplenty (thank you Janice). Your warm PBCC hospitality was much appreciated by our guests and will long be remembered. Should you want to see the kids perform again, they will be doing a concert at the World Beat Center in Balboa Park this Saturday (April 23rd) at 6:30pm. Thank you, PBCC!!!
