Dinner & Pawction at Greate Bay Country Club inSomers Point. For the second year in a row, we hadover 100 attendees! Board Trustee, Karen Kohlreprised her role as the auctioneer and once again dida wonderful job. Board President, Val Mazzei outdidherself in the “year in review” slideshow. There wereso many beautiful memories that brought tears, laughter and the hopeful outlook for another greatyear in rescue. A new addition to the event was a silentauction organized by Board Trustee, Cathy Larsen. This got the competition going and after dinner thebidding wars began! So many items were highly sought after and the bidders dug deep into theirpockets to help raise thousands of dollars for therescue. The next day was the big one…the 34th annualDoo Dah Parade started at noon. The morning wassoggy with some heavy rain early, but cleared upnicely in time for registration. TSBHR’s brigade in theparade is called the BoardWaddle, and there were

The two-day fundraiser began on Friday, April 12with the Basset Hound Olympics. The sun wasshining down on the hound competitors and thehuman spectators. A few dozen hounds took part inthe obstacle course, hurdles and high jump events. The spirited Basset-mixes, Buddy W. and BuddieBoo definitely brought their “A-game” and won goldin silver in several events. Some food additions tothe pre-order hoagies were fresh hot dogs and somedelicious homemade desserts provided by Roscoe &Bessy’s Waddle Crew. We will provide these well-received food options again next year! The winnerof the “Bassetude” award was a sweet senior houndnamed Martha. She may not have been the mostathletic, but her personality won over the judgesand crowd. A touching moment before the awardsceremony was “passing the torch” from the 2018Grand Marshal, Nora Anne Thomas to the 2019 GM,Quincy Francis. Later in the evening was the

The BoardWaddle takes months of preparation andplanning and the weekend itself is an exhaustingwhirlwind for the TSBHR board members (buttotally worth every second!). We look forward to alittle respite afterward, but not for me and BoardTrustee/Transport Coordinator, Cathy Larsen. Wewere immediately back in action the next weekendon a road trip to Alabama. We left Pennsylvania onFriday morning in a Chevy Suburban packed full ofsupplies and got back to the tri-state area onSunday afternoon with 13 hounds! The ride downwas daring at times with heavy rains and tornadowarnings on our route through Virginia. We made a nice pit stop in Tennessee, visiting one of ourfosters/transporters in the Knoxville area. Wereached our destination near Birmingham on lateFriday night and got some rest, which we definitelyneeded for what was to come! On Saturday wedropped off the supplies to some fosters and got tomeet some special hounds (Flapp, Chance andLucia). Read more about Flapp from BoardPresident, Val Mazzei on page 6).

Mama Bassador, Lucia said goodbye to her puppies whichwere all brought north for adoption on this transport. Luciastayed behind to finish her heart worm treatment, but she isadoption pending!

We also met a Basset-mix, Chance (who is stillavailable for adoption) and Lucia, a Bassador who wasa recent mama of 9 puppies! We met up with thefosters who had the hounds we would be bringingback home. They included Lucia's 9 puppies, two adultBassets, Casper and Betsy and bonded Bassadorsisters, Miss Blue and Daisy. By Saturday afternoonwe had all of the hounds loaded in and we hit the roadback north. We stopped a couple times to give thedogs bathroom and water breaks. By midnight wewere in Virginia and stopped at a motel to sleep forabout 5 hours. It was quit an adventure managing 9little puppies and 4 adult dogs! We did have to do ahead count once or twice to make sure we hadeveryone in tow! Up early on Easter Sunday morning,we hit the road with clear skies overhead andcontinued north. Making stops to adopters andtransporters along the way, everyone was so happy toeither help with a dog's journey or to bring them homeas a new family member. I have been on the board forover two years, but this was my first experience on alarge transport trip like this. I was amazed! Amazed atthe stamina and dedication of my fellow boardmember and road trip buddy, Cathy Larsen. Amazed atthe contrast between beautiful landscapes andincredible areas of poverty in the places we visited. And amazed at the huge network of such generousvolunteers in the South that help save so many lives.

www.tristatebassets.org

The little Beagle, Flapp tuggedat my heart strings a few weeksago by seeing the horriblecondition that he was in. But heliterally stole a piece of my heartwhen I got to pet and hold himduring this trip! Thanks to ouramazing network of volunteersin the South, he will want fornothing for the rest of his days!

Chance is 3-year-old Basset-Beagle mix that is available foradoption. If you are interestedin adopting Chance or any ofour available hounds, visit ourwebsite to complete anadoption application.www.tristatebassets.org.

hundreds of hounds that came out to strut theirstuff. The Doo Dah Grand Marshal, Barbara Eden (ofthe ‘60s classic sitcom, I Dream of Jeannie) wascertainly glamorous in her pink convertible, but wasno match for the BoardWaddle Grand Marshal,Quincy. Riding in a beach themed white Jeep andlooking handsome in a Hawaiian shirt, Quincyproudly represented TSBHR down the streets andon the boardwalk of Ocean City. Two staples presentin the parade were the “Pooped Pup” truck, whichgave rides to the tired hounds that could notcomplete the 1.68-mile walk. And the “SeniorExpress” which gave a stylish ride to some specialsenior hounds. The day ended on the practicefootball field at the high school for the Post-WaddlePicnic. A new rule from the city did not allow us tohave merchandise vendors, but 96.9 Lite Rock wasthere was there spinning the tunes and there was afantastic police dog demonstration from Joi Nicholasand her crew from Basic Obedience Training out ofPittsgrove Township, NJ. The food crew workinghard on the grills kept everyone fed and new thisyear were treats for the dogs in form of pup cups(vanilla ice cream topped with a bone). We also hadsome new dog activities (a ball pit filled with treatsand a beach-themed photo booth) and kids activities(make your own Basset ears and temporary tattoostations as well a scavenger hunt for prizes). Some

National Honor Society students from Ocean Cityhelped run these new activities. The artisticimagination of the people who dressed up theirhounds in costume and made parade floats wasincredibly strong this year. Some of our middle-schooler volunteers were the judges for thesecompetitions and had a tough time deciding thewinners. Back this year were the trophies awarded tothe top-ten pledge donors, which closed out the 2019BoardWaddle. As we reflect on this amazing weekendwe are humbled by the continuous support year afteryear from all of YOU for Basset Hounds (and mixes)and the goal to save more in need. Here is to anothergreat year in rescue! And save the date forBoardWaddle 2020, which will be on April 17 & 18!

How Do You Store YourDog's Food?By Julia Ellis, TSBHR Board Secretary

I try to shop local whenever possible. A local businesscares about and invests in the well-being of theircommunity and its future. One pet supply store that Ivisit often is Perk Valley Pet Eatery (PVPE). Theyopened their doors in 2003 and are located at 130 W.Main Street, Trappe, PA. They have helped mecountless times with choosing food, treats, supplements and toys for my hounds. They are alsovery generous to TSBHR! Owners Gordon and SueKriebel have donated food for our foster dogs andraffle items for our Brews for Bassets fundraisers. While visiting the store on several occasions, I haveoverheard the friendly and knowledgeable staff

Last month our Tri-State family dealt with a suddenloss of one of our own. James "Jimmy" Fowler was astaple at Tri-State events. You could always find himworking our store, selling shirts, helping with set upand clean-up at events, transporting, picking up dogfood for fosters and Jimmy was an active foster home, often with hospice cases. Jimmy passed awayunexpectedly just two days after this years'BoardWaddle weekend. It had been a great weekend and many people hadinteracted with Jimmy during that time. He was alwayshappy to help you and greeted you with a smiling face.To top that off, every single dog he came in contactwith him loved him. He was a special man. Jimmy was apositive influence and a huge asset to thisorganization. In memory of Jimmy we have createdTHE JAMES FOWLER MEMORIAL AWARD. www.tristatebassets.org

About the AwardThe James Fowler Memorial Award was establishedin 2019  to honor the memory and dedicated dogrescue service of James Fowler. Pet Food StorageContinued from Page 4

Page 6 Spring/Summer 2019

Senior Spotlight: Flapp the BeagleBy Valerie Mazzei, TSBHR Presidentproviding information to customers about proper

pet food storage. This was not something I wasaware of until I had conversations with PVPE RetailStore Manager, Linda and Marketing and EventsCoordinator, Tracy. The staff at PVPE says if your pets eat dry food, you should ALWAYS keep thekibble sealed in the original bag for two reasons:1) Premium dog food companies use better qualitypackaging, including the use of oxygen barrier bagsmade of petroleum products. This packaging, inparticular, is very effective at keeping out oxygenand moisture. In addition, residual fats and oils thatsettle at the bottom and sides of the pet foodstorage containers can become rancid andcontaminate fresh new food.  2) The original bag ofdry pet food contains the barcode, batch code, andexpiration date. This identifies the particular batchof food in the event of a pet food recall, or if yoususpect any problems with the food. They suggest ifyou still want to use a storage container, then placethe entire sealed bag into an airtight pet foodstorage container. PVPE offers several differentsizes of pet food storage containers (or go to yourlocal pet supply store to see what options theyhave). #shoplocal. For more information on theresearch behind the reality of pet food storagecontainers, check out this article from Rodney Habibat Planet Paws:

Tri-State Basset Hound Rescue is known for its love ofmixes. We are very successful at adopting them out andPROUD that we do it! Our intake coordinators wouldhave many sleepless nights after seeing all those littlefaces that needed help.  We cannot and will not turnour backs. In Flapp's case he had no Basset Hound inhim, but this fellow hound needed a helping hand andan army of generous, thoughtful people stepped up. Inall my years of rescue this is one of the mostmemorable stories of people working together to savea precious old soul. Whether donating to his medicalcare, helping to get him transported or sharing hisstory, every effort made a difference. We received amessage from friends regarding a very old, sicklyBeagle that needed urgent help.  Mr. Beagle foundhimself being surrendered to the Hardeman AnimalShelter in Buliver, Tenn. He was labeled by his formerowner as a "chicken killer" whom was no longerwanted. We found this hard to believe as Mr. Beaglecould barely stand up and had a mouthful of rottingteeth.  For many old sick hounds in the south this wouldhave been a death sentence, not in this shelter, not onthat day! The hardworking staff saw this sweet littleBeagle and he knew he deserved a chance toexperience love and comfort of a worthy home. Shelterstaff are often overlooked for all they do, after all it'sthe rescue that saves the dog right? That statement

could not be further from the truth. Saving an animal'slife starts with the shelter staff. Immediately, CathyLarsen was on the case to get him to safety. Thanks toJim Roberts with Pilots N Paws, William Richardsonthe ACO from the animal shelter and Reba Morse ofthe Sandy Wayne Sanctuary (a TSBHR foster home),less than 12 hours after we saw his plea Mr. Beagle wasflown to safety.  Once his forever foster mom laid eyeson this sweet boy he was given a formal name. A newname for a new start in life....he was to be calledFlapp. Flapp is high heart worm positive, he has a heartmurmur, all the teeth in his mouth were rotten and hehas a spinal handicap. After gaining a few pounds, Flappreceived much needed vaccines and a dental, wasneutered, received a de-worming and is on his longroad to recovery for his heart worms.

Senior SpotlightContinued from Page 6

Flapp is a happy dog who loves his new life! He hasmade many new friends in his pack of elderly, specialneeds brothers and sisters. Flapp loves to be heldand rocked like a baby but mostly Flapp loves a goodhunt! He goes out into the fenced in yard sniffing theground and once he's hot on thetrail of a good scent he lets out a delightful yodel and howl lettinghis family know he is still very much a young Beagle at heart. Every dog deserves his day and Flapp's story was no different. The public out pouring and financial support raised for this old little Beagle was overwhelming and inspiring.Flapp will know nothing but comfort and love for therest of his life.  I find it amazing how one person'strash can be someone else's treasure. Welcome toyour new life Flapp.
