The importance of vision

• 5 senses (or more…?)

• It is estimated that 80% of our learning takes place

through our use of vision – incidental learning.

• 40% of brain function is dedicated to vision and

understanding it.

• Vision impairment restricts access to information.

• Vision is the co-ordinating sense.

• Appeal Process (closing date: 6th December)

• Monitoring process.

Carried out by the Early Years and Quality Improvement Team, except for school nurseries, in which case Geraldine, Mel or Marian will be monitoring.

The process focuses on the progress the child is making and effective use of funding, as described in the application

Early Years and Childcare Service

• NSPCC- In January the @NSPCC is holding a one day introductory training course on safeguarding deaf or disabled children and young people. Email [email protected] for details

• Early Years SEND Partnership will be hosting a one day training event on a whole setting approach to SEND in York. Final date and time to be confirmed- information will be shared through FIS.

• Looking for community venues that are accessible and free to host for setting support on paperwork for funding to promote inclusion.

• Bookstart packs- Don’t forget that there are packs for children with sensory impairments and for children that speak additional languages. BookStart packs are free for all children aged 3-4 years. National Literacy Trust figures highlight that 1 in 8 children say that they do not have a book of their own at home.

SEYST

• Early Years Peer Challenge review.

The Local Government Association is to carry out a review during the week beginning 2nd December 2019.

The specific focus will be about reducing gaps in speech, language and communication outcomes in the early years, with the goal of improving school readiness and social mobility.

Updates• IMPOWER is undertaking a review of SEN over the

next few weeks. They are hoping to highlight good practice but also to help find ways of saving money. IMPOWER have sent out a survey to be completed by all Early Years partners
