INTRODUCTIONThis directory of Early Years Foundation Stage training and support has been created for all early years settings, out of school and holiday clubs providers, schools and registered childminders.We are a team of experienced and dedicated staff, highly qualified and experienced in delivering learning and development for the Early Years Foundation Stage. We work closely with local providers to deliver training, bespoke in-house advice and support, audit tools, quality assurance schemes and facilitation of professional networks.

We value our relationships with all the providers and regularly evaluate our services. We use this feedback to constantly improve our offer and to develop in a responsive way.

FREE SUPPORT

For Plymouth providers of funded early education places, September 2017 to March 2018:

In addition to our support and training that you can purchase, there will be some free support too. The sessions will offer one free place per funded provider and additional places can be purchased.

� one spring term and one summer term half-day Early Years SENCo briefing and a twilight mop-up session for those unable to attend the half-day briefing

� one spring term and one summer term Leaders and Managers meeting

� one spring term and one summer term half-day Leaders on Learning event and twilight mop-up session for those unable to attend the half-day event

� one Early Years Advisory Teacher (EYAT) visit to focus on “narrowing the gap”, discussing vulnerable funded 2, 3, and 4-year-old children, and the strategies you are using to support their progress

� support following a Requires Improvement or an Inadequate Ofsted inspection outcome.

BOOKING A COURSE

When booking onto a training course via our online course booking form you will be also be required to provide us with an online registration form if one has not been completed this financial year (1 April 2017 to 31 March 2018). If your circumstances change you will need to complete a new one.

All participants will be contacted by email before the course date to confirm their place on the training. If you have not had confirmation two weeks prior to the course start date please call us on 01752 307450.

Each provision will receive a monthly invoice for any course fees and any charges after the course has taken place.

CANCELLATION POLICY � Non-attendance and cancellation of less than eight days notice will be charged at full

cost.

� Free courses: any non-attendance and cancellation of less than eight days notice will be charged £30.

Plymouth City Council has the right to cancel courses subject to numbers booked on the course and at the tutor’s discretion.

AN INTRODUCTION TO CONFLICT RESOLUTION

Target audience

Early years practitioners working with three to five year olds in the Early Years Foundation Stage.

Course description

This session offers practitioners the opportunity to find out about the HighScope approach to conflict resolution.

The trainer will use a questioning approach, supporting practitioners to reflect on research and use video clips to facilitate professional discussion on the following themes:

� the nature of conflict and conflict resolution

� why child development is central to successful problem solving

� the role of the adult in a problem solving approach to conflict

� the six steps of HighScope conflict mediation.

This is a fascinating and interesting look at a topic which we all encounter every day in our settings.

Aims and objectives � to explore a problem solving approach to young children’s conflicts

� to reflect on how and why young children can benefit from a conflict resolution approach

� to consider positive limit setting and the importance of an emotionally supportive environment.

By the end of the session delegates will be able to: � explain the benefits of a problem solving approach to resolving conflict

� share a variety of problem solving strategies to support young children in learning to resolve conflicts.

COMMUNICATING MATTERS

Target audience

Early years practitioners including teachers and teaching assistants working with children 0 to five years.

Course description

The importance of a qualified workforce who understand how to develop young children’s communication and language was highlighted in the Nutbrown Review of Early Education (2012).

This course offers an illuminating introduction to communication and language in the Early Years Foundation Stage. In a supportive learning atmosphere, practitioners will gain a deeper understanding of children’s communication and language, consider the impact that their own communication behaviour has on children and develop practice to promote communication.

Aims and objectives

This engaging and thought provoking course offers practitioners the opportunity to consider these questions:

� Why does communication matter?

� How do we communicate?

� How do young child learn to communicate?

By the end of the session delegates will be able to: � describe the skills needed to hold a conversation

� explain what is meant by communication and how this develops from birth

� outline their role in supporting children to communicate.

EARLY YEARS FOUNDATION STAGE (EYFS) SPRING ASSESSMENT MODERATION FOR SCHOOLS

Target audience

EYFS teachers and assessment coordinators in schools.

Course description

In this meeting attendees will have an opportunity to consider and discuss the evidence for children’s latest Spring term assessments for literacy, communication and language with colleagues and Local Authority moderators. Assessment judgments will be agreed and how to support children to meet at least the expected level of development will be discussed.

This will be useful preparation for the summer EYFS Profile Moderation visits and agreement trialling.

Aims and objectives

To develop practitioner’s confidence in their assessment judgements.

By the end of the session delegates will be able to: � develop their confidence in the accuracy and validity of summative assessment

judgements

� consider how to support children to meet at least the expected level of development in literacy and communication and language.

Delegates need to bring any recorded evidence for literacy, communication and language to support their judgments including observations, annotated photographs, children’s work and evidence from other significant adults including parents. WiFi will be available.

Target audience

SENCo’s, deputy SENCo’s, managers and childminders in the private, voluntary and independent Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS); and EYFS teachers or SENCo’s in schools.

ONE FREE PLACE PER PROVIDER IN RECEIPT OF EARLY EDUCATION FUNDING INCLUDING SCHOOL NURSERIES.

Additional places can be purchased for £50.

Course description

This half day briefing will focus on the SEND Code of Practice 025 Area of Need Social, Emotional and Mental Health

Aims and objectives � implement appropriate activities to support the development of children’s social,

emotional and mental health

� gain an awareness of who to contact for further support in this area.

By the end of the session delegates will be able to: � feel confident in supporting children’s social, emotional and mental health.

NEW COURSE

EMBEDDING ELKLAN FOR SCHOOLS

Target audience

Teachers and teaching assistants in schools who have attended the ten week Elklan speech, language and communication for 0 to fives course.

Course description

This course will revisit some of the key messages, tools and strategies that schools can use to support all children’s speech, language and communication. It will encourage attendees to reflect on their provision, for example:

� How can practitioners, through their interactions, encourage children to communicate more?

� How do you support children to understand and use new vocabulary?

� What strategies do you use to develop children’s talking skills?

Aims and objectives

This will be an excellent opportunity to focus on developing how you support children’s communication and language.

By the end of the session delegates will be able to: � list ways to assess children’s speech, language and communication

� describe a variety of strategies to support children’s communication and language

� reflect on the impact of the key messages from Elklan.

INCLUSIVE FRIENDLY SETTINGS

Target audience

Early years practitioners.

Course description

This course will promote a whole setting approach to inclusion to support the best possible outcomes for all children with SEND.

Aims and objectives

To develop an understanding of how to ensure a setting is inclusive.

By the end of the session delegates will be able to:

� identify the key elements of an effective inclusive friendly setting

� implement a variety of strategies to support all children with additional needs in the setting.

INSPIRING BEST PRACTICE – COMMUNICATION AND LANGUAGE

Target audience

Early years practitioners, including teachers and teaching assistants, working with children 0 to five years.

Course description

“The foundation of all communication is human language and although it’s easily taken for granted, it’s the most complex skill we will ever learn.” Communication Trust 2013.

Communication and language is essential for progress in all areas of learning and development. This course will offer practical ideas to help children in the Early Years Foundation Stage to develop this complex skill.

Aims and objectives

Delegates will consider how to support each aspect of communication and language; listening and attention, understanding and speaking.

By the end of the session delegates will be able to: � describe how to provide a rich, varied and stimulating environment to support and

encourage communication and language

� explain the role of the adult in supporting the development of children’s communication and language.

This introductory course will support practitioners to develop the key skills needed to support the vital role of PSED within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).

Aims and objectives

To explore the three aspects of PSED within the EYFS and how to support their development to reflect on the importance of early attachment and the effect of early experiences on brain development.

By the end of the session delegates will be able to: � describe the factors that promote effective PSED

� give an overview of the three aspects of PSED within the EYFS

� understand the importance of early attachment and the effect of early experiences on brain development.

Early years practitioners who lead on the learning and development agenda within a room, throughout their setting or in a nursery in schools.

Network description

This session is guided by experienced early years advisory teachers and provides an exciting opportunity for leaders on learning to network and discuss current early years issues affecting day to day practice.

Aims and objectives

There will be discussions around quality outdoor learning, including nature pedagogy, forest school and opportunities for enhancing literacy and mathematics outdoors.

By the end of the session delegates will be able to: � network and share ideas of quality Early Years practice

� participate in facilitated discussions on current Early Years themes.

Course description

This course will reflect on engaging and inspiring mathematics invitations children can encounter in all early years settings.

Aims and objectives

Practitioners will reflect on quality day to day mathematical provision and gain further ideas to enhance this.

By the end of the session delegates will be able to: � talk about key mathematical milestones and how to help children gain mastery of

these

� reflect on a range of interesting resources and consider how similar equipment can enhance and extend children’s learning

� consider daily routines as mathematically rich learning opportunities.

REFLECTING ON PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT – ‘A FRESH LOOK AT PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT’

Target audience

Early years practitioners.

Course description

“To move, to run, to find things out by new movement, to feel one’s life in every limb, that is the life of early childhood.” Margaret McMillan (1930:23)

This course goes beyond looking at children’s gross and fine motor development and offers a deeper look at why physical development is a prime area. Practitioners will gain an understanding of its links to children’s language and emotional development and how this can enhance children’s holistic development.

Aims and objectives

To gain insight into how physical development links to children’s holistic development and how Development Matters can be used to plan effectively for both the adult role and the environment

By the end of the course practitioners will be able to: � explain how physical development enhances children’s holistic development

� confidently use Development Matters when planning physical development opportunities

� define the role of the adult in enhancing physical development experiences.
