The PHELPS FAMILY
OF ANDOVER
came in the ship nRercules "/to Salem Henry Phelps of London, April,
in/1634. '.Vith him was his wife, Elinor, and son, Henr1 (2). mot11er's /
One daugh-
ter remained in England, as is shown by he? will made 1654.
Henryfl)ts record is hazy, but we know that he died early, and
that his widow married Thomas Tresler •• Elinor and her second husband
died within tVIO yeo.rs of each other. An inventory of his estate was
taken on Jan.5,1653-4; her will was brought into court on April 26,
1655.
In 1654 ~linor bought land on the Ipswich River from Edward Norris,
the minister of Salem, and she left this f'arm to her sons by her first>
husband, Henry (2) and Nicholas (2) Phelps.
Henry (2) Phelps and Wife, Hannah ( Bassett(?) were in Salem in
1652. In 1661 he was on the lot near Giles Corey, now
the site of the Phelps'Mills on the Salem & Lowell RoE.
In 1658 he was on the list of those favoring Quakers,
whom he declared he loved, as they were' "not so rash as
the other brethrenrl. He is on the Court records for f'lirt
;If{tl the wife of' one of' his brother' s- very likely with
Susanna, the wife of' Nicholas. The time and place of
his death and that of his wife, 8.re still uncertain.
Nicholas (2) was here in Salem in 1640. His wife, I believe, was Susann
who was fined in 1661 for slander and scolding, among .' .:.~
offenses c In 1651, lJicholas, with Sam'l Shattock,r.awrence
and Cassandra Southwick, Joshua Buf'rum and Josiah South-,
wick , all of Salem. were banished f'rom the Colony on acct
of their Quaker views. Nicholas with Sij.attuc~ ancil Josiah
Southwick went to E~gland and obtained a royal mmdate :-

1625. In 1661 he got land in Andover from JOhIl Godfrey. He ... was a weaver. He married Elizabeth Adams, ~ 1627,' the dau,
of Robert and Elinor Adams of Newbury. Edward kept the estate
in Salem ~or awhile and some say that he had property in New-
bury, from whence he came to Andover in 1661. He died here
Oct.3, 1689 , without leaving a will. The estate was pro-
ba te fuarch 31, 1691-1:aizabeth P..t the t Llle, being too ill to
