Early Education in Calamba and Biňan

• It is a typical schooling he received characterized by the 4 R’s – reading, writing, arithmetic, and religion

• Instruction was rigid and strict

• The Hero’s First Teacher

- The first teacher of Jose was his mother, a remarkable woman of good character and fine culture

- As a tutor, Doňa Teodora was patient, conscientious and understanding

- The 1st was Maestro Celestino, and 2nd, Maestro Lucas Padua

- Later, an old man named Leon Monroy, a former classmate of Rizal’s father, became the boy’s tutor

• Jose Goes to Biňan- He was

accompanied by his brother Paciano

- At night, Jose went sightseeing with his cousin Leandro, but instead of enjoying Jose became depressed because of homesickness

• First Day in School- Jose was

introduced by Paciano to his teacher, Maestro Justiniano Aquino Cruz

- Rizal described him as “tall, thin, long-necked, with a sharp nose and a body slightly bent forward”

• Best Student in School

- In academic studies, Jose beat all Biňan boys

- Rizal recounted “In spite of the reputation I had of being a good boy, the day was unusual when I was not laid out on a bench and given five or six blows.”

• End of Biṅan Schooling

- He left Biṅan on December 17, 1870 after one year and a half of schooling in that town

- He boarded the steamer Talima

• Martyrdom of Gomburza

- The execution of Gomburza on Feb. 17, 1872, was deeply mourned by the Rizal family and many Filipinos

• Injustice to Hero’s Mother

- Before June of 1872, tragedy struck the Rizal family

- Doňa Teodora was arrested on a malicious charge that she and her brother, Jose Alberto, tried to poison the latter’s perfidious (dishonest) wife

Entering Ateneo• Ateneo Municipal

was a college under the supervision of the Spanish Jesuits

• It was formerly the Escuela Pia (Charity School)

• The name was changed to Ateneo Municipal and later became the Ateneo de Manila

• Rizal studied here from 1872-1877

• Scholastic Triumphs at Ateneo de Manila (1872-1877)

- Accompanied by Paciano, they matriculated at the Ateneo Municipal but refused to admit him by Fr. Magin Ferrando due to 1. He was late for registration and 2. He was sickly and undersized for his age

- But with the help of Manuel Xerez Burgos, nephew of Fr. Burgos, he was reluctantly admitted

- Jose was the first of his family to adopt the surname “Rizal”

• Jesuit System of Education

- The system of education in Ateneo was more advance than other colleges that time

- They also offered vocational courses in agriculture, commerce, mechanics and surveying

- Students were divided into two groups: the “Roman Empire” consisting of the internos (boarders) and the “Carthaginian Empire” composed of externos (non-boarders)

- Within the “empire”, the students fought for positions

- Any student could challenge any officer in his empire to answer questions on the day’s lesson

• Rizal’s First Year in Ateneo

- Rizal’s first professor was Fr. Jose Bech

- He was an externo, hence he was assigned to Carthaginians

• Summer Vacation

- At the end of the school year, Rizal returned to Calamba for summer vacation

- He did not enjoy his vacation because his mother was in prison

Lesson Learned• There are lots of circumstances, trials or

problems you will encounter on your road to attain a degree

• These circumstances should not be treated as hindrances in achieving your ambitions in life

• They must be treated as challenges that will make you strong and resilient to pursue your dreams and make them realities

• After all, your going to harvest the sweet fruits of your labors

• Always remember the 3 hard principles; pray hard, study hard, work hard
