Early College Programs includes two premier, academic early college academies for the best and brightest high

school students from around the world. The academies are housed on the campus of Fort Hays State University

(FHSU) in Hays, Kansas. Students from both academies live and study alongside one another while taking rigorous

college coursework with traditional college students during their junior and senior years of high school.

In the program, students receive:

• hands-on research opportunities with Ph.D.-level faculty

• leadership development and civic engagement opportunities

• co-curricular activities to develop the whole student

• a high school diploma & the option to complete an Associate of General Studies in Science degree from FHSU

Admission into the academies is competitive and applicants are evaluated holistically. The admission committee

takes into consideration standardized test scores, GPA, attendance, maturity, leadership, involvement, character

fitness, and a multitude of other criteria.

* KAMS/AMS does not rank students. However, a student’s sending high school may provide a class rank on the sending high school transcript.

KAMS was established by legislative action in 2006 by Senate Bill 139 and is Kansas’ first and only fully immersive early college program. KAMS allows academically talented and motivated Kansas high school juniors and seniors to live at FHSU and attend a residential academy. Although students complete their remaining two years of high school at FHSU, they remain enrolled in their sending high school. During the college application process, KAMS students will submit a Fort Hays State University transcript and their respective Kansas high school transcript. Upon graduation, Kansas students receive a high school diploma from their sending high school and a certificate of completion from KAMS.

KANSAS ACADEMY OF MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCE (KAMS)

ACADEMY OF MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCE (AMS)AMS was established to accommodate the KAMS program’s growing international and out-of-state student populations. AMS students live on campus in the same residence hall and take the same courses as KAMS students. International students attending AMS are enrolled at Nickerson High School (Nickerson, Kansas). Even though our international students live on campus and take courses through the AMS program at FHSU, they are enrolled at Nickerson High School. During the college application process, international students will submit a Fort Hays State University transcript and a Nickerson High School transcript. Upon graduation, our international students receive a high school diploma from Nickerson High School and a certificate of completion from AMS.

Out-of-state students attending AMS are enrolled at their respective state’s sending high school. During the college application process, out-of-state students will submit a Fort Hays State University transcript and a high school transcript from their respective out-of-state sending school. Upon graduation, out-of-state students attending AMS will earn a high school diploma from their respective sending high school and a certificate of completion from AMS.

COVID-19 RESPONSE: In March 2020, all FHSU in-person classes were moved to online delivery through the spring semester, ending in May 2020. Currently, FHSU and KAMS/AMS are offering a four-pronged approach to course delivery for early college students. Some courses are being offered totally on-campus in a condensed, 8-week format. Many courses are being offered in a hybrid format (16-week) with coursework being completed both in-person and virtually. Some courses that were originally scheduled to be fully on-campus are being offered in a totally online format (16-week). It is up to each FHSU academic department and faculty member to design their courses as they see fit. Lastly, some KAMS/AMS students are taking virtual courses that were intended to be virtual and have chosen to remain off-campus.

*FLEXIBLE PATHWAYS: Our course schedule provides students with a choice of an academic pathway that is related to their anticipated academic program and/or career of choice. Students are given the option to complete more rigorous coursework in their desired discipline based on their background, previous knowledge, and academic interest.
