MULTI-CULTURAL TRACK

“#IamHUMAN” The importance of Decision Making for/with our Children Roman Orona Saturday, 9-10:15a Room A2 Through media and conversations, Roman Orona facilitates discussions about Native Culture (song, dance, prophecy and philosophy); the importance of decision-making for and with our children; creating unity; building community; and the impact of multi-generational work. Southwestern United States. His goal is to teach balance in all aspects of life: world peace, equality of men and women, environmental and cultural preservation, racial equality and the abandonment of all forms of prejudice. Audience: All ages conversation but geared more toward parents and teachers. Children are encouraged to come, participate and let their voices be heard.

“The Complexities of Making Music in a Multicultural World” Bonnie Lockhart & Barb Tilsen Saturday, 1:45-3:00p Room A2 Many of us use music and other material that originates from cultures worldwide. We seek songs that celebrate the human family, that are respectful of indigenous people and of all people of color. We find and write songs that help children understand racism, offering children a glimpse of thoughtful, brave, and passionate responses to racial injustice. We want to share multicultural music in order to help every child develop an authentic, knowledgeable identity, and to help all children form empathetic,

respectful relationships with people of diverse backgrounds. But we know that the use of multicultural materials risks reinforcing stereotypes, and promoting ‘otherness.’ We know that the history of American racism includes dominant culture’s appropriation of material that the originating cultures hold dear. Too many songs promote unity while fostering a “color-blindness” that obscures the richness of cultures and the harsh differences of racism in people’s experience. In this workshop, Bonnie and Barb will share thoughts, experiences, songs and suggested guidelines to spark a meaningful discussion of these themes. Barb Tilsen is a singer, songwriter, performer, poet, teaching artist, and teacher trainer, with three CDs, who has performed for audiences of all ages since 1971. She has worked with preschool and elementary age children since 1986, through her children’s music program, “Sound Beginnings”; as a teaching artist with the Minneapolis Children’s Theatre Co, the Children’s Museum, Steppingstone Theatre, Intermedia Arts, West Bank School of Music, and the ArtStop. She has been published several times in Sing Out! Magazine as well as other books, broadsides. Bonnie Lockhart, MA, is a Northern California singer/songwriter who brings a love of diverse folk traditions to her forty-five-year practice of participatory, community-building music. She is a performer, composer, educator, recording artist, and activist who believes in the transformative power of music in the lives of both individuals and communities. She has taught music for Early Childhood in several Northern California colleges and is a past CMN board president, and a current avid member. Audience: Any and all who wish to understand and share music that truly celebrates the human global family.
