The Tennessee Genealogical Magazine, "Ansearchin'" News, is the official publication of The Tennessee Genealogical Society. All subscriptions begin with the first issue of the year. Non-delivery of a magazine should be reported to the Society within two months of the usual delivery date. There is a $3.00 charge for redeem- ing and re-mailing any magazine returned for an incorrect address unless we are timely notified of an address change. Subscribers may submit annually without charge one query of fifty words or less; queries received by November 1 will be considered for publication during that calendar year. Contributions of all types of genealogical material will be accepted. We solicit previously unpublished Tennessee connected data, preferably with pre-Civil War dates, all subject to editing for style and to save space. Every effort is made to print accurate material correctly; however, neither The Tennessee Genealogical Society, "Ansearchin" News nor the Editor can assume responsibility for contributor errors. Corrections of proven errors will be published. Contributions are available in the society library for subscriber use. Books donated to our library by authors or publishers are reviewed in the earliest possible issue of the magazine.

"Ansearchin'" News

OVER THE EDITOR'S DESK

Here it is Springtime again and we all have thoughts of traveling to different states, conty courthouses and libraries, in search of that elusive "missing link." You will find some seminars and family reunions listed in the "MARK YOUR CALENDAR" section on page forty-four. Your answer could be there.

The mail that crosses our desk is, as usual, varied and interesting. We are always pleased to hear from subscribers with suggestions, compliments and even complaints. A suggestion from Virginia Curnutt Lanning of Hobbs, NM. touches on a situation encounted in books and periodicals more often than we like . . . the of names copied from headstones in a cemetery. In order to place family members together, it would be more helpful if a cemetery were read and printed as a grid, with a stated beginning and ending point. Ms Lanning made the same observation about census records. You will note that in "Ansearchin"'News we print an 1840 census exactly as it is, page by page. And even though the person recording the names on a tax list may alphabetize within a District, we print each District as it appears on the film. It always helps your genealogy to know, not only all the relatives in a given location, but the friends and neighbors as well.

The importance of reading and comparing records was pointed out by Mr. Gene Fricks of Clementon, NJ. He noticed a connection between Roane County Courts Minutes 1801-1805 (last issue p. 159) and Petition 26-2-1801 (last issue p. 172) concerning a division of Knox Co. Mr. Fricks observed that many of the names on the petition were found later in Roane County, which was formed from Knox and Blount in 1801.

Another letter announces the new Elliott family newsletter "ELLIOTT 'n' KIN", whose purpose is the collection and interchange of family history and genealogical data about Elliotts and their related lines. The Tennessee Genealogical Society Library receives many family newsletters which are placed in binders on the shelves of the library. How can you please Civil War buffs and computer "nuts" at the same time? During the next two years, hundreds of genealogists, history buffs and others, will be typing the names of 3.5 million blue and grey soldiers onto computer diskettes. By early 1996, Americans will be able to find out their ancestors' links to the war by searching for their names and regiments on computers at the National Park Service's 28 Civil War sites. These include two major battle sites in the Mid-South: Shiloh, in Hardin Co, TN, and Vicksburg, Ms.

THE YOUNG LADIES' MODEL SCHOOL OF FAYETTE COUNTY, TENNESSEE Prepared by Dorothy Marr Roberson

Files of the Fayette County Library in Somerville, TN, contain an 1857 school catalogue that provides a good insight into that era's formula for turning out model young ladies. Officials of the Young Ladies' Model School make it clear in the catalogue that each pupil boarding in the institute is expected to "deport herself with that degree of complaisance which marks the conduct of the true lady."

The catalogue, printed in Memphis by A T Norton & Co., was donated to the library a number of years ago by Mrs. Jim Clay of Oakland, TN. It spells out rules and regu- lations for students, and lists the school's 9 trustees, 16 teachers, and 264 students as well as their parents and residences. Tuition for each 21-week session ranged from $16 to $21, with an additional $2 for supplies. Students enrolled in the "ornamental branches" of art and music were charged another $10 to $30 per session. Board, including a furnished room and lights, was $50 to $60 a session. Each pupil was required to supply her own towels and table napkins, and parents were admonished not to supply their daughters with sweetmeats and acids "as they are fruitful sources of evil." Party-going was considered a serious evil and was strictly forbidden. Students were allowed to visit town only once a month and had to be accompanied by the lady or gentleman with whom they boarded.

The school evolved from a female seminary established by the Town Commissioners in 1831, and was in operation until the turn of the century. It had various names, the best known probably being the Somerville Female Institute.

One of the Civil War battles fought September 1, 1862, has left an almost forgotten landmark. This was remembered on the 130th anniversary September 1992 at Denmark, Madison Co, Tennessee. The anniversary was celebrated by a battle between Federal and Confederate forces re-enactors. Living as the original combatants did, wearing the same type of uniforms [wool!], and using the same type of weapons, including artillery [only with blanks!], they have preserved the drill and tactics of the time and given modern Americans a flavor of the Civil War period.

In a September 1993 week-end re-enactment of the battle, which took place near Jackson TN, members of Wolf River Pipes and Drums visited Denmark Presbyterian Church which began on Cub Creek in 1821. The occasion was the reopening of the old church, which had been renovated and restored to its 1884 appearance, the year the present building was constructed. In the upper story of the building was a hall used by local Freemasons and Woodmen of the World Camp No. 193. The church was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983, the first church in Madison County to be so honored. Further, it is the oldest church in the Memphis Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church. The pews are the original ones that were made for the building, although the gates are now gone.

For one night, in 1862 the Masonic Hall was used as a prison for eighty-seven Federal captives after the battle of Britton Lane. Another Civil War memory is preserved by a plaque on one of the pews. Two young Confederate soldiers were in church one Sunday morning with their sweethearts. Federal troops surrounded the church and searched the building. However, they did not find the Confederate soldiers, who hid under the hoop skirts of their sweethearts. JOSEPH AND NANCY MILLARD WILLIAMS BIBLE -Submitted by Lucile Hendren Cox 626 McConnell Steet Memphis, TN 38112

This Family Bible was purchased at a cost of $3.60, by Nancy WILLIAMS in Gadsden, TN. It was published by J. B. Lippincott & Co., 1860. Its records reveal that Joseph WILLIAMS, Sr., (born 15 Jan 1812), married Nancy MILLARD, (born 11 Jan 1806), on 17 Mar 1839 (29 Mar 1840 according to the certificate). Joseph Williams, Sr. died 12 Nov 1859, and Nancy Millard Williams died 27 June 1896, at the age of 90. Goodspeed's History of Crockett County, Tennessee, indicates that both Joseph and Nancy Williams were born in North Carolina, as was their first son. There were five sons born to the marriage: Robert Jesse Williams, born 8 Jan 1841; Kenan Williams, born 2 Feb 1843; Charles Williams, born 9 Aug 1845; Isaac Williams, born 17 Nov 1847; and Joseph Williams, Jr., born 10 Jan 1851, died 20 Jan 1851.

Dr. Robert Jesse Williams served in the Civil War as a 2nd Lieutenan of the 6th Tennessee, under Captain COLLINGSWORTH and Colonel STEPHENS. He was discharged in August 1861, married Nannie E. HICKS in 1863. Robert J and Nannie Hicks Williams, born 27 June 1845, had three children:

CAMPBELL AND POLK DESCENDANTS FROM SCOTLAND VIA IRELAND TO NORTH CAROLINA, TENNESSEE, and ARKANSAS

William CAMPBELL, born ~1761, died 10 Oct 1832, at age 71. He lived in Mecklenburg Co, NC, where his parents, Robert Campbell and Jennett Campbell, had settled. Robert was born c1735, died 7 Dec 1795 aged 60, Jennett was born ~1736, died 29 Sept 1799 aged 63. The tombstone of Robert Campbell had the Coat of Arms of the Scottish Campbell Clan of Argyll. William served as a Private in the American Revolution in the Battles of Guilford Courthouse and Hanging Rock. For his service, he received a 640 acre land grant on 23 April 1781.

He married in Mecklenburg Co on 3 Feb 1790, Deborah McRAE (McREE), born ~1765; and she died 19 Nov 1814, at age 49. Her parents were Robert McRae (McRee) and Margaret POLK, the daughter of William Polk (POLLOCK) and Priscilla ROBERTS. William Polk came to America from Ayrshire, Scotland via Ulster, Ireland. William and Priscilla Polk were the parents of Ezekiel Polk, the father of Samuel Polk who married Jane KNOX; she was a descendant of religious reformer John Knox, founder of the Presbyterian Church. Samuel and Jane Polk were the grandparents of James Knox Polk, the 11th President of the United States. The Polk family moved from North Carolina to Maury Co, Tennessee.

William and Deborah McRae Campbell had ten children, all of whom were born in Mecklenburg Co, NC: (1) Harriet B. Campbell; (2) Margaret T. Campbell who married Robert WALKER; (3) Deborah P. Campbell who married John SMITH; (4) Mary Campbell; (5) Jane C. Campbell; (6) Robert M. Campbell who married c1830 Jane -2 he married second,Sarah (Sallie) MONTGOMERY in 1854, as indicated by the Harmony Baptist Church Records; (7) Andrew M. Campbell who married Mary Jane NEELEY; (8) William J. Campbell; (9) John D. Campbell; (10) an infant buried in the Mecklenburg Co, North Carolina, Steel Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetery by 1837.

After their parent's deaths, the surviving children of William and Deborah Campbell sold the one thousand acre farm in North Carolina and in 1837 joined the oxen-drawn wagon trains in the move to West Tennessee. Additional information on some of them is listed below:

(1) Harriet B. Campbell YATES, widow of Westin Yates and mother of Westin Yates, Jr., married Dr. Jonathan BURFORD of the Haywood/Fayette area of West TN. He became the guardian of Westin Yates, Jr. At her death, Dr. Burford's first wife, Nancy, had left him with a large family.

(6) Robert M Campbell, born 1796, and wife, Jane , born ~1810, moved to Haywood Co, Tennessee with their children:

(a) Richard, born 18 Nov 1830 (b) Harriet D. born 15 Apr 1833, married (~1848) John SEARS, an

Englishman and a tailor in Danceyville. They had two daughters before he died in 1851. In 1856 Harriet Sears married Jessie S. LUTON. They had five children.

(c) Sophia, born 25 July 1835, married KING. Robert and Jane first settled in Haywood Co after which they moved to Fayette Co, near Dancyville, TN. Five children were born in Tennessee:

(d) William Jefferson, born 4 Sept 1837, died 28 Sept 1898, married in Haywood Co on 24 May 1866, Alcenith Caroline ADAMS, born 28 Feb 1841, daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Adams

(e) James M., born 23 Feb 1840; later lived near Cabot, AR (f) Margaret M. born 18 June 1842, married - BENNETT; to Cabot, AR (g) Lawrence Alexander, born 10 Feb 1844, died 6 Nov 1877 (h) Robert M. born 11 Dec 1846 married Mary A. CLANCY on 30 June

1869; in the 1880 Census there were 3 sons: William J., Frederick and Lawrence; by 1880 the Robert M Campbell family moved to Lonoke, AR.

Three years after Jane Campbell's death on 28 Mar 1851, Robert Campbell married his second wife Sarah (Sallie) MONTGOMERY in 1854. There were 5 children born to that marriage:

One of Robert M. and Jane Campbell's sons was William Jefferson Campbell (6,d) who married Alcenith C. ADAMS. In the Civil War, William Jefferson Campbell enlisted in Fayette County TN, in Joseph Wheeler's cavalry regiment and fought at the Battle of Shiloh. William J. & Alcenith C. Campbell had a family of 8 children:

125 YEARS AGO - March 15, 1869 Washington - The House Census Committee has decided to establish a separate

Census Bureau. It was shovm that under the old system of taking the census through the United States marshals, numerous frauds were perpetrated.

In some districts thousands of names in excess of the population were reported and the marshals were paid for them. There will be no more fees for census takers, as the committee has determined to fix their salaries.

No. 736 dated 28 Nov 1795, lying on the east side of Stone's River on the east fork of the first creek above Stoner's Lick creek. When he came to examine the property he found that it contained only 578 A. He petitions to extend the lines to include 640 A, or to be issued another warrant for the balance.

sation is allowed by law. "He therefore prays your Hon'ble body to pass a Law authorizing the Treasurer of Miro District to pay the within claim; as also a law declaring the manner in which Sheriff thro out the State shall hereafter be paid for similar services." 29 Aug 1803

The claim is dated June 25th 1802 "to erecting a gallows in the south field ... $2.50. To Hanging of Charles POWELL and Michael WEST each five pound North Carolina currincy, equal to in Dollors 124 each ...$ 25.00. To cash paid DEADERICK & TATOM for Ropes to hang them with. . .50 cents. To cash paid Archibald McREYNOLDS for making of two coffins ...$ 6.00. Ditto paid to Negroes for diging of Graves ...$ 1.00.

TENNESSEANS' TOMBSTONES FOUND I N CALIFORNIA

Joy BURKHOLDER of Greenville, California, reports finding tombstones for several Tennesseans during her wanderings in some old cemeteries in her home county of Plumas in northeast California. The Tennesseans are believed to have settled in Plumas County during the Gold Rush of the 18501s, ot soon after, and their families may never have heard of their deaths.

"Most of the people who were buried in these cemeteries (long out of use) most like- ly were not listed in the California state records - partly because of the early dates and partly because of the unorganized towns at that time," she writes.

Prattville Cemetery, just off Highway 89/70 (orginally located in Big Meadows, was moved to its present site when the area was made into the reservoir now known as Lake Almanor) had fhe following tombstone:

Thomas HENDERSON - Native of Tennessee Died 11 August 1909, age 78 years

(No other Henderson markers were found.)

Cromber Cemetery in Cromberg, California, just off Highway 89, had the following:

Pro in court by Bradford who noted this exception: "he saw Joseph Branch and Nicholas Branch execute the within deed or acknowledge the Execution thereof as their act & deed . . . but since the execution thereof the sd deed has been altered in this that the word Senior following the words Joseph Branch in the fifth line from the bottom has been erased, but by whom this deponent knows not."

" to Joshua HOLT of Orange Co, NC, 2000 A on the south side of Duck River and east side of Sugar Creek . . . mentions corner of James BRADSHAW, Charles McCOMMICK & Amos BALCH, line of George MARTIN, A Balch & Richard Martin . . . the land was granted 10 July 1788 to Robert McCAMECK, and by him (through his attorney in fact, William McCAMEE) deeded to Hugh HUNTER, formerly of Petersburg. Hunter sold in 1796 to Elias Parker "heretofore of the same town & formerly husband of the sd Mary Parker . . . " Elias Parker devised the property to his widow by his will dated 25 May 1798. The signature on the clerk's record is clearly Mary BAKER, by her attorney in fact, George Keith TAYLOR, but in every other transcription it is written clearly Mary Parker. Pro in Petersburg court 7 Aug 1809 before John GRAMMER, Clerk and endorsed by Archabold BAUGH, Mayor.

In Gherokee & P-cestrp, Sandi Garrett has traced her family history using reproductions of Department of the Interior records, such as applications for enrollment as Cherokee citizens. Other sources include marriage licenses, birth & death certificates, testimony for Dawes enrollment, and Cherokee Nation census. Charts are used to explain relationships, and photographs and maps illustrate the text. Also included are explanations of terms associated with Cherokee research. Family names included are: Adair, Harlan, Starr, Alberty, Field, Hood, McDonald, Scott, Bean, and Ghi-ga-u (Nancy Ward). The author invites any one interested to send her an S.A.S.E.; she will verify the family link before the book is purchased.

In Qnly The & m e s Remain, Mrs. Garrett has compared names on the Drennen Roll of 1851 and the Guion Miller Applications which date from 1906 to 1910. The Drennen Roll was made up of those forced to remove from the Cherokee Nation East and those who voluntarily moved before the forced removal. These rolls were taken to identify persons entitled to money owed the Cherokees for one reason or another. In comparing the two lists she has identified, when possible, the relationship of one list to the other. The author plans to publish more districts in future volumns .

Volumes A-D have been abstracted, transcribed, annotated, and indexed. All names have been included when possible. Many of the cases deal with property and the settling of estates, and names of heirs and relationships are included. For the genealogist, the information is a useful tool in untangling family lines. The original minutes can be viewed on film at the Tennessee State Library and Archives in Nashville and at area libraries. The author urges anyone who plans to cite her transcription to view the primary source, and also to investigate other sources in the Inventory for Jackson County Records at the State Library in Nashville. She asks to be notified of any errors found in her work.

New to family historians, these County and Circuit Court Minutes were abstracted from microfilm in chronological order. A11 of the county court business for the years 1816-1828 is included. Divorces, administration of estates, deed of conveyance, debts, jury lists, insolvents, and law suits are some of the areas which came under the courts jurisdiction. County maintenance was also one of the areas of court responsibility. Citizens called to oversee the roads are listed. All names from the original minutes are included. Family connections are revealed in guardian- ships and paternity suits.

This family history includes Swedish Gustafssons from the area which became Pennysylvania and English Justices from Virginia. Both were in the colonies in the seventeenth century. The text concentrates on the coastal tier of colonies, later states, tracing the families over several centuries. Members of both families moved into Tennessee, the Gustafssons usually spelling their name Justus. The index is unique in giving a birth date for each Justis/Gustafsson, which is designed to simplify the research. Illustrated with photographs, copies of newspaper items, deeds, and other documents. Each chapter is completed with a bibliography.

Subscribers are invited to furnish vital statistics on ancestors from any locality for the Society's Master Surname mle. Use only 3 x 5 inch cards (no other size fits the file). Include your name and address; put the current date a t the top right corner of each card; please list names and birth dates of subject's children on the back of the index card. Please use the sample card format shown below. You may want to keep a list of Index Cards you have submitted; and if there is a change in your address or information on any of your Surname Cards. you may send new cards with instructions to replace old cards. Index Cards are filed by ancestor surname.

Subscribers may request a search of the Surname Index File for ancestors and persons who could be researching the same name--only one family name for each request. please, and no more than one search request per month. A long SASE is essential for return of information in the file.

Each request must: 1. include surname and given name 2. give at least one date and one location (even if they are estimated) 3. have a legal size SASE
