¡Nuestra PTA te quiere! Our first PTA meeting and potluck for the year was a huge success! Thanks to the 40 parents who joined us last Wednesday night to hear more about how parents can get involved at St Stephen Catholic School. If you weren’t able to attend, the reoccurring message that board members shared at the meeting seemed to be, “Get involved. You won’t regret it!” All parents will have a chance to test that theory in the next week as we get ready for the annual Spaghetti Dinner on Nov. 2. Also, don’t forget that we need each St Stephen family to make or provide two bars, cookies or a cake for our dessert table, and to sell 10 tickets to the event. My name is Anne-Marie Kelley. As the mother of Savannah, Jonah, Elijah and Jeremiah, I’ve been a part of the St Stephen Catholic School family for 14 years. This year, I’m looking forward to being an active part of the St Stephen parent committee by promoting and marketing our school and its events. As a parent, I know this school is the best kept secret in the valley. Since we still have room in our classrooms for a few more students, we all need to keep our eyes open for families that can benefit from our fantastic school. In addition to publicity, I’m also organizing the Children’s Mass on the first Sunday of every month. I’ve taken on this job because as a mom with kids who range in age from 19 to 7, our family has seen the benefits of attending mass together every Sunday. I know its hard with life’s demands but getting in the habit of Sunday service when they are young makes it so much easier to continue through the challenging middle school and high school years. On Nov. 3, we are moving the Children’s Mass to the 10 a.m. Sunday mass to see if that works better. We hope you can join us. Finally, the St Stephen Christmas show will be here before we know it. That’s always my biggest volunteer commitment. My college-aged daughter and I do all of the choreography for the show. It brings us great joy to work with your children on a show that celebrates the real meaning of Christmas. Hola, familias de la Escuela Católica St Stephen. Mi nombre es Anne-Marie Kelley. Como madre de Savannah, Jonás, Elías y Jeremías, he sido parte de la familia de la Escuela Católica San Esteban durante 14 años. Este año, estoy deseando ser parte activa del comité de padres de St Stephen promoviendo y comercializando nuestra escuela y sus eventos. A New Way to Teach Religion If you have children at St Stephen Catholic School, you may have heard them talk about Atrium. Atrium with the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is a very special religion education program that we brought to our school a few years ago. Students in Pre-K through the 5th grade benefit from this program that was carefully developed with an environment known as the atrium and materials that help children to draw nearer to God. Teachers are trained to use scriptural and liturgical themes that resonate with children’s religious needs according to their age levels. For our youngest grades, that means focusing on essential elements of our faith like the announcement of God’s love experienced through Jesus, the Good Shepherd. Lessons for children under 6 years old revolve around the Parable of the Good Shepherd. Our older students’ curriculum (6-11) is captured by the image of the True Vine, recognizing the deep need of children this age to better know his or her relationship with God, family, friends and the larger community.

The Scripps National Spelling Bee has been around for over 90 years! School first and second place overall winners will receive a one-year subscription to Britannica Kids. Classroom Competitions will be held the week of November 11-15. There are three levels of words students may use to study for their classroom and the school competition. 1 Bee words are appropriate for students in first grade and onwards. 2 Bee words are appropriate for students in third grade and onwards. 3 Bee words are appropriate for students in six grade and onwards. Students are free to study as many lists as they choose! Included with the lists is a selection of books for Great Words, Great Works! The school primary, intermediate, and middle school competition will be held on December 11, 2019 at 6 PM. We will have primary grades 1-3 first, followed by intermediate grades 4-5, and last middle school grades 6-8. The winners of each competition (primary, intermediate, & middle school) will compete in the finals to be our school champion. The Intermediate winner (grades 4-5) will have the opportunity to travel to Good Shepard in Denver to compete in the Archdiocesan Intermediate competition on January 11, 2020. The Archdiocesan Advanced Bee will be held on February 1, 2020, at Nativity of Faith and Reason for 6, 7, 8th graders and 5th grader who qualified by making it to the final spell down of the Intermediate Bee. The Colorado State Spelling Bee in Denver is only open to students who qualify by making it to the final spell down of the Advanced Bee. The Archdiocese of Denver usually has 10-12 spellers who go on to State. The state competition is on March 14, 2020. St. Stephens is so excited to be competing this year- Spell on scholars! St. Stephens, we do not dress in costume for Halloween at school.

Why Rigor? As parents, we all want the best for our children. We are concerned about their learning, well-being and morality. Families who choose St. Stephen Catholic School have indicated to us, through surveys, in the spring of 2019, that academic rigor is the second most important reason that they have chosen St. Stephen for their child; the first reason is being Christ-centered. Every parent wants to make sure that they’re putting their child in a school that will do the best possible job of helping their child succeed. So, what is academic rigor? Real academic rigor is more than mastering high standards. Academic rigor occurs when teachers hold students to high expectations, by creating challenging lessons and helping their students to meet those high expectations. In order to achieve rigor, students must be actively engaged and be using critical thinking skills at deep levels. We, as educators, are challenging students to question assumptions and to make connections beyond the assignments in the classroom. If we distill it down, academic rigor is basically helping kids to think for themselves. At St. Stephen, students are challenged to create their own meaning of what they learn. They organize information to make “mental models”. They integrate separate skills into whole sets of processes, and they apply what they’ve learned into new or innovative situations. This is the kind of intellectual discipline that educational, industrial, as well as, political leaders have deemed necessary to compete in this global economy. As a Catholic school, we are uniquely poised to not only teach our students to reason and think critically, while in the pursuit of truth, we also have the ability to help them to see the world and its problems with a faith-based lens.

Girls on the Run We are so excited to be offering Girls on the Run, a national empowerment program, to St. Stephen girls in 3rd-5th grades. This year, 14 students are participating in this 19-week program that culminates with a 5K run in Steamboat Springs on Nov. 9. Twice a week after school, the girls have a short lesson on subjects ranging from bullying, to self-esteem and to how to make friendships. Then, they run. A special thank you to faculty members Jenna Payne, Debbie Cook and Leidy Lozano, plus parish members, Lori Fairbanks, for running the program. Service Learning in Every Classroom At St. Stephen Catholic School, the teachers have committed to getting each grade level of students involved in Service Learning. That’s why this year, the teachers have taken it upon themselves to require each classroom to commit to a Service Learning Project. It could be visiting the elderly or walking dogs at the Care Center. Keep your eyes open for St. Stephen students out and about making their community better by being of service to others.

Virtues in Practice Program/Programa de Virtudes en la Práctica Ask Your Child About this month’s virtue… Here at St. Stephen Catholic School we use The Virtues in Practice Program, which was created by the Dominican Sisters. The goal of Catholic education is heaven, but know- ledge alone will not get us there! Virtues in Practice helps students to live out the faith in their everyday lives. Each year has a virtue/ theme of study; this year’s virtue is Faith and the theme is Service. The virtue of the month is Reverence – showing your deepest respect for all things of God. This month’s focus saints are: St. Elizabeth of Hungary, Bl. Fra. Angelico and St. Joseph Moscati. Look these saints up and consider how they lived the virtue of reverence in their lives.

St. Stephen Christmas Poinsettia Sale! ¡Venta de Poinsettia de Navidad de San Esteban!

Please support our school by ordering and selling poinsettias for the upcoming holiday season. Order forms went home on Thursday (10/24) and are due back to the school by Friday, November 8th. Poinsettias will arrive on Monday, December 2nd. Por favor, apoye nuestra escuela ordenando y vendiendo poinsettias para la próxima temporada de navidad.
