Myrtle Luvelle “Misty” Van Horn Summers By E. Gale Leigeber, Es Said Court No.

Page 2 Eagle’s Call

At Grand Council we heard Gale Leigeber talk a little about her great grand aunt, Myrtle. I asked her to write an article about her history for our newsletter. Thanks Gale! An Organizer of the Ladies Oriental Shrine of North America Myrtle Van Horn Summers was born June 6, 1872 in Bayersburg, Belmont, Ohio, the twelfth of thirteen children of Robert Israel and Sarah Hinkle Van Horn. Her father was a farmer and the family had a long history in the Belmont, Ohio area. One of her ancestors, Magnuson Van Horn, served in the Revolutionary War and his ancestors had a family home in Lower Manhattan at Broad-way and Wall Street. The Dutch Re-form Church records has a record of all births in New Amsterdam and the Van Horn family can be tracked until they moved to New Jersey and fur-ther to West Virginia. Myrtle was married November 19, 1890. Her husband, Silas James Sum-

mers, was a steel worker, a roller, with a long family tradition of work-ing in the mills. The family was prom-inent in the steel industry. Silas re-ceived a medal for 50 years service with United States Steel Corporation. He came from a large family as well, with nine siblings. Six of the children emigrated from Scot-land and crossed the Atlantic with their parents Betsy Faulks and George Summers, Sr. in 1867. One of them was only 18 months old. George Sum-mers, Sr. at one time owned and ran the Russia Mill in Niles, Ohio. He also held steel industry patents. Myrtle and Silas had three sons, Robert Oliver, Earl Fran-cis, and George Rid Summers. Several things were dear to the hearts of the family. Nu-merous family members were members of Masonic related organizations. Myrtle, espe-cially, was prominent in local women’s organizations, being Past High Priestess of the Isis Court No 1, Ladies Oriental Shrine of Wheeling, West Vir-ginia, Past Matron of the Mari-on Chapter, Order of the East-ern Star, organizer and first President of the Beaucean Society in the Wheeling area and a member of the White Shrine. Probably her greatest contribution was as an organizer of the Ladies Ori-ental Shrine of North America. She was given the title Grand Recorder in

1909, although Grand Jurisdiction was not established until 1913. She was officially installed as Grand Re-corder at the First Grand Council Session in 1914, and served until her death in 1929. She was given the title Honorary Grand High Priestess in 1913.

Myrtle made numerous trips by train from Wheeling, West Virginia to Pittsburg, Pennsylvania to help establish a Court in Pittsburgh and in so doing form the Grand Council of the Ladies Oriental Shrine. A story from one of Silas and Myr-tle’s great-grandsons, Jay Summers:

Page 3 Volume 2, Issue 2

“Misty” cont. By E. Gale Leigeber, Es Said Court No. 29

“Grandpa told me a story about Silas giving Misty (Myrtle) a hand gun to ride the trains with since she did so much traveling. I have the handgun, it is a Smith and Wesson Lady Smith .32 Cal. revolver and it’s in excellent condition for being about a hundred years old.” Myrtle, her husband Silas, her son Earl Francis and his wife Catherine Cowan Summers all have Shrine re-lated emblems on their headstones. Myrtle and Silas are buried in Green-wood Cemetery in Wheeling, West Virginia along with other family members. Anna Summers Riddle, the sister of Silas James, was also active in Isis Court and is pictured in a 1919 pho-to of the Isis Patrol.

Anna was also an early member and may have been present at the origi-nal meeting of the Court at the ho-tel. The two were close. Anna and her husband George Riddle did not have children and Myrtle named one of her sons after Anna’s husband George, calling him George Rid Sum-mers. My father had close ties to Anna espe-cially. His grand-mother (my great-grandmother) died when my grandfa-ther was only 4 years old. Anna was like a grandmother to him. She raised my grandfather and his brother before

my great-grandfather remarried. I have a letter sent to An-na and George to honor their 50th wed-ding anni-versary that my dad sent to them while he was serving in WWII. Many family members

were also very musically talented. Several played in Shrine bands. Silas James played trombone and held a patent for a trombone slide. Earl Francis, Silas and Myrtle’s son, was the first Concert Master of the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra. His son, Earl Francis Jr, played first violin with the Orchestra.

A copy of the first picture from the 100th anniversary celebra-tion brochure of Isis Court No 1. Myrtle is sitting front and center in the patrol leader’s outfit. To her left (lighter colored hair) is her sister-in-law Anna Summers Riddle

The Osiris Band. Myrtle's son Earl Francis is 4th from left in second row, holding the clarinet. There are at least 3 other Summers Family members in the picture who are unidentified

Besides being a small business owner I am a paralegal of 14 years as well as an artist (since I was 5 years old). That’s when I received my first art scholarship to John Herron Art Institute. I enjoy water-color painting, dancing, and building things, including structures. I especially love running heavy equipment (such the tom-boy). Yes, I do own a rivet

gun!

Hi, my name is Dianah Markovich-Sparks, born in Indianapolis, IN on November 16th. My father, Walter Louks, joined Murat Shrine in 1960. He was very active and we attended many Shrine events and toured the hospitals. I was also active in Job’s Daughters. In October 2001 I joined LOSNA, Tarum Court #14 as a Snow White Turtle Dove and have had a great time with everyone,

I am totally enjoying being one of Diana’s Soaring Eagles! This adventure is a lot of fun! In 2007 my fiancé, Jerry Markovich, be-came Potentate of Murat Shrine and I was First Lady. We were married the following year on July 31, 2008; however, our time was destined to be short. Jerry was diag-nosed with a very aggressive cancer in March 2009 and passed in July the same

year. We had a sign & awning business, of which I became the sole owner. While continuing regular business efforts including attending Shrine social events I became reacquaint-ed with Clint Sparks, also a widow-er. We had actually known each other for many years since our fathers were “best buds” in and out of Shrine. Clint and I were married on December 18, 2010. We are very happy and live on a small ranch with our two little furry feline girls, Sapphire Blue and Nora.

Chaplain’s Corner by Lady Judy White Harris

All of us 1st CL’s are “in training”

to become High Priestesses. To

do so we must become visionary

leaders. How do we obtain that

position? Here are several hints

from “The Right to Lead.”

First, we need to look within our-

selves. Vision must come from

inside of us. The thing that

brings it out is passion.

Second, we need to look behind

ourselves. Every leader’s vision

is based on his or her own per-

sonal experience What does

your past tell you about your fu-

ture as a leader?

Third, we need to look around

ourselves. What is happening to

others? As a leader we must al-

ways take into account other

people. If others aren’t with you,

you aren’t leading, you are simp-

ly directing.

Fourth, we need to look ahead of

ourselves. Look at the big pic-

ture. Leaders don’t get bogged

down in the minutia…they see

everything as though from a

mountaintop. That’s why goals

are called “visions.”

In the next issue I will share

more leadership hints so that we

may become the best HP’s that

LOSNA has ever had!! As Lady

Diana has set as one of her

goals for us, we must use our

eagle wings to soar!

Notes From Your Class Vice President By Lady Linda

Page 5

I wish everyone the Joys of the Holi-day season. I hope 2014 brings peace, joy and good health to everyone and that our Troops finally come home safely. I have been very busy with Hawaii Court this fall. I also had a chance to visit Lady Meredith’s Court in Toronto when I was in Canada for a family wedding and Canadian Thanksgiving. The weather even co-operated giving us a wonderful Indian summer. The leaves were turning glorious colors. This is a time of year I really miss while living in Hawaii. We managed

to escape Canada before the snow came! September saw our Official visit with Lady Jan Hiebert GHP. Although she was only here a few days, we all had a great time and visit. October saw us entertain the Children with a Hal-loween Party complete with cos-tumes and games. In December, La-dy Marlene McCarty PGHP, was here on a visit from Alaska. We were lucky enough to see her at our Court meeting and also at our Christmas party. Please remember if you are coming to Hawaii on vacation, contact me and we will do something together. I enjoy showing off our State. I hope to see many of you in Wichita at Grand Council in May. Please don’t forget to collect something from your area for the Silent Auction at our Class luncheon. I will remind you again in the Spring Newsletter. We will also be having a class get to-gether the Saturday night before Grand Council begins, so we can

catch up with everyone and their activities this past year as 1st CL. More information to follow. I also still have some Class sashes for those who want one. Just let me know. Until the next newsletter, work

hard for the Shriner’s Hospital and the Children and for your Courts. Aloha for Now. Linda Brice 1st CL Hawaii Court No 60.

Sunshine Unit Meet Recap By Lady Judy White Harris

Page 6 Eagle’s Call

The Sunshine Unit Meet (SUM) was held in Tampa Florida from Nov. 7-10 at the Embassy Suites Hotel, only a few blocks from the Shriners’ Chil-dren’s Hospital. A tour of the hospi-tal was held, as well as many other activities with the theme of “Pirates in Paradise.” SAR-I Court #79 was in charge of the SUM under the direc-

tion of President, Lady Mary Jane Hamilton, PHP and Grand Directress Lady Jennie Crawford, GT1Y, PGHP, PHP. Under the business of the meet, Ar-ticle IX, Section I, was amended to eliminate including the cost of the Formal Banquet and the Breakfast meeting in the registration fee. A joint meeting with 1st and 2nd Cere-monial Ladies was held in Lady Judy Harris’s room with Lady Janet Lar-son, Grand 2nd CL, PHP Hawaiian Court , Lady Peggy Sue Mitchell, 2nd CL SAR-I #79, Lady Jan Monroe, 1st

CL Cairo Court #97, Lady Randa Workman 1st CL HADJI #88, Lady Vir-ginia Search 2nd CL, Lady Shannon Henry, acting 1st CL Crescent Court, and Lady Judy Harris, 1st CL SAR-I #79 in attendance. We all shared ideas on fundraising, keeping good records for Audit, etc.

Grand Lady Janet Larson shared some excellent tips for leadership, includ-ing: A leader should be service orient-ed, not demanding; lead by example; don’t ask anyone to do anything you aren’t willing to do yourself; read your Red Book starting now and know what it says; research before answering questions if you are not sure of the answers; know and practice your pro-tocol; and get copies of everything your Recorder gets. She also told us to always have fun in our courts, re-minding us that the original purpose of LOS was for the ladies to get to-gether and have fun. It was a delight to have her with us! Later, Lady Jan Heibert, Grand High Priestess, PHP Arami Court #101, Wichita, KS shared her idea of what makes a good leader. She said that “Preparation” and “Communication” are two principles that are a must. We welcomed Lady Shannon Henry who will be joining our class after the next election. She is currently acting

pro tem as 1st CL for her court. It was a great meeting and I commend the officers of the 41st SUM who made it a won-derful experi-ence. Next years’ SUM will be in the same place from Nov.6-8, 2014 under the leadership of Cai-ro Court #97.

Western Area Organized Unit Meet By Lady Karen acDougall

Page 7 Volume 2, Issue 2

On September 19-21, 2013 Oasis Court No. 75 held the “Tucson Roundup” at the Radisson Suites Ho-tel in Tucson, Arizona. They had lots of fun tours planned in the Tucson area that everyone enjoyed. On Friday we started out with a Class Breakfast with our hostess for the morning, Pamela Morgan, 1st CL of Oasis Court.

Friday night we were all off to a Dude Ranch for Fun Night. Everyone had their squirt guns filled up and a wet time was had by all! Saturday we had a nice breakfast and business meeting. Than we were ready to start the Unit Drills. The ex-hibition floor was small, but everyone seemed to manage it well.

El Minya Court No. 46 from El Paso, TX was in attendance for the first time in many years. They put on a great show with their “Thriller” routine. I got some good pics of our own Connie Pan-toja!

All in all the 2013 WAOUM was a great suc-cess and the Oasis Court was the rea-son. They put on a great event and made everyone feel welcome.
