News from the Office Remember - NO left turn off of Grover Street, and please RESPECT the crossing guard during arrival &

departure times.

Be certain your child knows his or her going home plan each and every day, including having a bus note, if needed. Calls into the classroom are disruptive and we try to keep them to an absolute minimum.

If your child is going to be absent please call Ms. Peacock at 370-7302 or send an email to [email protected]

When your family plans extended travel during school time, please continue to read daily and encourage your student to keep a journal to share with the class upon his/her return. Teachers plan instruction according to daily progress, so providing work in advance may not coincide with what actually happens in the class. Teachers will set aside the assignments as they occur and present them to you and your child upon your return instead of attempting to anticipate all lessons that will occur in advance.

Please like and follow Friday Harbor Elementary School on Facebook!

Did you know you can access SKYWARD through Family Access to track your child’s attendance, grades, lunch balance, etc.? Log on here or find at www.sjisd.wednet.edu.

If you’d like to have lunch with your child please call the office first thing in the morning (or the day before) so we can include you in the lunch count. Thanks!

We have been learning about water displacement and density

while making boats. The fourth graders are learning about the

different parts of the eye and how it works. All grades will be

gardening soon to plant ingredients for making Stone Soup at the

end of the school year using the

harvest. I will be sending home

information on the 5th grade science

fair soon.

We continue to have fun and

explore!

Sue Kareken

PTO is gearing up for the Book Fair

which will take place during conferences

Please let Charlene McEwen [email protected] know if you’d like to help. There are many shifts available including set up and break down. The book fair is a

This month brings some new activities from the

health room.

Vision and hearing screening will be done on March 6

& 7 for all K-3rd and 5th grade students. If your child wears glasses, please be sure they are

brought to school for the screen. If students fail the initial screen or are absent, re-screening

will take place March 21tst.

An orientation to the FLASH and KNOW curriculum will be available to parents Thursday

evening, March 9 at 6pm.

FLASH is an acronym for Family Life and

Sexual Health and KNOW is an HIV/Aids

curriculum. FLASH/KNOW will be taught to all

5th and 6th grade students this spring and will continue each year through high school.

The curriculum is designed to encourage communication at home regarding puberty, body

image, personal boundaries and sexual health. A science-based approach is used to provide

accurate information and parents provide values and open lines of communication. I

encourage every parent to stop by for a brief presentation of how this information will be

presented, then peruse the curriculum materials. If you wish to opt out of this curriculum for

your child, you have 30 days after attending this training to sign a written exclusion for your

child.

For vaccinations, exclusion letters have been sent. Any child remaining out of compliance for

vaccinations will be excluded from attendance at school beginning March 20. Please get your

updated information in quickly. If you need an immunization, the Health Department and

Island Clinics are prepared.

Thanks for your help on this.

cafeteria from 2:45p-6:00p (11:00a-6:00p on early dismissal days). STAR’s daily program includes

snack, outside play time, organized games & activities, and homework time. You must fill out a

TREC - Teen Recreation - Wednesday afterschool program from 3-5:30pm, Rec House located at

650 Park Street, beside the HS football field. This program is for 7-12 grade students (mostly 7-8th

make food, do crafts/activities, do homework, or just be a teen. We provide snacks and we typically

make/bake something special on top of the snacks.

SCOOTER/TRIKE AND OPEN SKATE- Always a good time. At the fairgrounds 5:30-6:30 for Scooter

and Trike (bikes allowed with training wheels only); Open Skate from 6:30-8:30. Due to another

program using the fairgrounds building there is NO SKATE night on Saturday, February 25.
