Scripture 1 Timothy 1:3-7, 6:3-16 NT Page 207 & 210

Sermon True or False Rev. Jamie Armstrong This week we continue the Letters from God series. In the daily readings, you have a chance to read selections from 1st Timothy, but you might want to read each word of all six chapters. The truth is for many Christians, there are ideas in some of the letters of Paul that just don’t seem to make sense in the world we live in. As you read, remember, Paul and others were writing to churches and to individuals in a particular place and time, with particular issues that threatened these fledgling churches.

As he wrote letters to the churches and to individuals, Paul didn’t set out to write words that would be considered Holy Scripture. But as these letters were shared, the church, the gathered community, sensed an inspiration in them that was greater than Paul. They sensed that these words both contained God’s word, and are God’s word, inspired by the Holy Spirit.

As Paul writes to Timothy, the young pastor in the church at Ephesus, Paul speaks about the mission of the church, the qualifications of leaders and social concerns of the day, all in an effort to call Timothy (and the church) to true godliness and righteousness. Throughout the letter, Paul addresses people who are fascinated with fanciful and false teachings. So as you read this week, consider what some of the more contemporary examples might be. What are the current discussions that tend to do nothing but create controversy? What are the great debates of our age that lead to envy, quarrelling, malicious talk, evil suspicions and constant friction?

Now turn the conversation around and imagine the kinds of conversation that build community. How can your words and your life be an example that leads to encouragement, reconciliation, appreciation and expressions of confidence and support within the community? As a final discipline for the week, memorize 1 Timothy 6:11 and consider what it means to pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance, and gentleness.
