We are a progressive organisation, incorporating the latest advances in reproductive medicine and leading the introduction of new techniques in Ireland, many of which have become standard practice, driving the quality of treatments available to patients.
Waterstone Clinic was the first clinic in Ireland to deliver babies born following Pre-implantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD); Pre-implantation Genetic Screening (PGS); and Microsurgical Testicular Sperm Extraction (MicroTESE). Waterstone Clinic was also the first Irish clinic to implement routine blastocyst culturing, paving the way for elective single embryo transfer. Our clinic was the first to successfully use Vitrification for embryo cryopreservation, which improves the viability of frozen embryos.

A of dedicationOur team at Waterstone Clinic is committed to excellence. We are specialised in fertility medicine and are among the most experienced clinicians in Ireland. Our Medical Director, Dr John Waterstone, leads our team.
Dr. John Waterstone has dedicated his medical career to women’s health and fertility. A graduate of both the Science Faculty (Genetics) and Medical School of Trinity College, Dr Waterstone began his career at the Rotunda Hospital, Dublin before training in Obstetrics & Gynaecology in teaching hospitals in London. He established Waterstone Clinic in 2002, which has become one of the most successful fertility clinics in Ireland. He is Medical Director at Waterstone Clinic and runs a Gynaecology practice at the Bon Secours Hospital, Cork. As a Consultant Obstetrician, he has delivered over 7,000 babies in Cork.
Dr. Farhat Khan is a consultant in reproductive medicine. Dr Khan completed his specialist training in Obstetrics & Gynaecology at the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists, London. His interests and expertise include polycystic ovarian syndrome and the preservation of fertility for cancer patients. Dr Khan has a wealth of experience in Assisted Reproduction, enabling him to deliver the highest possible care to patients. He is a member of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland and a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Australia. He is a member of the Irish Fertility Society, the British Fertility Society, and the European Society of Human Reproduction & Embryology.
Dr Xiao Zhang is Head of Research & Development at Waterstone Clinic. Dr Zhang is a medical doctor who received his PhD in Reproductive Medicine from Peking University in China. In 2003, he was the first doctor in China to achieve an assisted pregnancy from frozen eggs. Dr Zhang received an honorary professorship from Zhengzhou University, China for his excellent contributions to fertility research. Moving to Cyprus to work as a clinical embryologist, he introduced a PGD programme due to the high incidence of a genetic condition in the local population. He furthered his research and successfully set up egg and embryo vitrification programmes. In Waterstone Clinic, Dr Zhang has led the development of new patient-centred services such as vitrification and PGT. His research has been published extensively in Europe and around the world.
Dr. Minna Geisler is a consultant in reproductive medicine. She is passionate about fertility and the importance of fertility awareness. Dr Geisler joined the consultant team in Waterstone Clinic in 2017 and is also an Obstetrician & Gynaecologist at Cork University Maternity Hospital. Her research has centred on predicting the risk of preterm labour in pregnancies conceived with IVF/ICSI. Dr Geisler is an honours medical graduate of University College Dublin and a member of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland and Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists.
Dr. Tim Dineen leads the Embryology and Andrology teams in the laboratory and is a founding member of Waterstone Clinic. Dr Dineen received his PhD from NUI Galway and undertook further specialist training in Genetic Counselling. Dr Dineen is an ESHRE certified Senior Clinical Embryologist and has a keen interest in male infertility, as well as being a core member of the clinic’s PGT programme. Dr Dineen helped establish the strong link between Waterstone Clinic and NYU Fertility in New York.
Dr. Peter Wiegandt is a highly regarded fertility specialist consultant who joined the Waterstone team in 2009. Dr Wiegandt worked in the largest IVF unit in Budapest where he completed his specialist training in Obstetrics & Gynaecology. Dr Wiegandt’s interests and expertise centre on male fertility, pre-implantation genetic testing, and egg and embryo donation. Dr Wiegandt is a fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists and a member of Irish Fertility Society, British Fertility Society and the European Society of Human Reproduction & Embryology.

The facilities have a dedicated PGT suite, and the Embryoscope+ incubator is used routinely by our embryologists to monitor embryos through the full course of their development.
Our laboratory team members have technical, research and medical backgrounds, and most hold a PhD education level. Our senior embryologists are certified in their speciality by the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE).
