FWPS understands the

importance of before- and

after-school programs for

some families.

We are making a change in the 2019–20

school year, and have selected a program that

is high-quality, more affordable, flexible, and

will be available at all 23 elementary schools.

The program is Right At School which offers

engaging curriculum to help spark the joy of

learning and 21st Century skill development

such as critical thinking, problem-solving,

collaboration, leadership and more. It’s also a

program used in other districts in our region,

and we are pleased to bring it to FWPS.

For more information about Right At School,

and a fee schedule, visit:

www.rightatschool.com, or call

1-855-287-2466. Registration for the 2019–20

school year opens soon.

Next School Year 2019-2020 Before & After School Programs

We have been working hard in the library.

Our intermediate grades have been creating book reviews, learning new vocabulary and how to determine a stories theme.

In the primary grades we have been learning about points of view, cause and effects, main ideas and details and even about the water cycle!

For our students in grades 3-5: please consider participating in the Camelot Library Reading Promotion. There are prizes for filling out the library log for every twenty days that you have read for 30 minutes or more.

Cold vs Flu—When to Keep Your Child At Home

SYMPTOMS COLD FLU Onset Slow, over days Sudden, within hours

Fever Low or none Yes, *if fever of 101 or higher for more than 24

hours, see your doctor*

Chills No Yes

Headache Rare, mild Yes, can be severe

Body Aches Slight Yes, can be severe

Cough Mild hacking, May be productive

(mucus-producing) or non-productive (little to no

mucus)

Yes, non-productive (little to no mucus) can be

severe

Extreme Exhaustion No Yes

Sore Throat Yes Sometimes, but not common

Weakness, Fatigue Mild Yes, can last for weeks

Stuffy or Runny Nose Yes Yes

Chest Discomfort Mild Yes

Although flu (influenza) and colds are both respiratory illnesses, they’re caused by different viruses.

Colds may start with a little tickle in your throat and it can take a few days for you to experience the full

onset of symptoms. The flu hits hard and fast. You may wake up feeling fine, but by the end of the day

you have a fever, chills, and are completely exhausted.

PREVENTION

1) HANDWASHING! And LOTS of it!!— Handwashing is #1 in preventing the transmission of disease.

This flu season is especially bad, affecting a greater number of people more severely than in many

years past. If you get the flu, it can lead to very serious health problems such as pneumonia and

bacterial infections.

2) FLU VACCINE — It’s true that this year’s flu vaccine has not been as effective as years past, but it

may still decrease the severity of your symptoms. It can also help protect you against next year’s flu.

3) REST and NUTRITION – Together, these two factors can help keep your immune system strong. The

Sleep Foundation recommends school-aged children get between nine to eleven hours of sleep each

night. Consume foods high in vitamin C such as oranges, pineapple, and grapefruit. Strawberries, kiwi,

and papaya are also good sources of vitamin C. A well balanced diet is best.

4) COVER COUGHS and SNEEZES! – Help prevent others from getting sick by coughing and sneezing

into your arm or sleeve, not in your hands!

TREATMENT

1) REST – The body needs time to mend and recover, so stay in bed!

2) WARM STEAM – This will help with chest or head congestion.

3) DRINK MORE FLUIDS –Water is best, but whatever you can get your child to drink to prevent

dehydration works. Even chicken soup!

4) DECONGESTANTS (for a stuffy nose), PAIN RELIEVERS (for headaches, body aches), and

ANTIHISTAMINES (for a runny nose, sneezing) may help to reduce symptoms.

5) GARGLE WITH SALT WATER for a sore throat.

6) STAY HOME! — If it’s more than just a runny nose and a little cough, please keep your child at home!

CAMELOT ELEMENTARY—“Anything Can Be”

Page 7 EACH SCHOLAR: A VOICE A DREAM A BRIGHT FUTURE

Sleep: How many hours does your child need?

Do those numbers surprise you? Regular sleep deprivation can lead to difficult behaviors and health problems, irritability, difficulty concentrating, high blood pressure, obesity, headaches, and depression. Children who get enough sleep have been found to be healthier, perform better in school, have better behavior, better memory and better mental health. Healthy Sleep Habits- Tips from the American Academy of Pediatrics

Make sufficient sleep a family priority. You are the role model. Keep to a regular daily routine. Develop a bedtime routine such as brush, book, bed. Be active during the day. Include physical activity and fresh air. Monitor screen time. TV’s, computers, laptops, tablets and phones are recommended not

to be in a child’s bedroom. Screens should be turned off at least 1 hour before bedtime to prevent sleep disruption.

Create a sleep-supportive and safe bedroom and home environment (Keep your child’s bed a place to sleep rather than a place to play)

Realize that teens require more sleep, not less. Avoid overscheduling. Take time to wind down and give children the downtime that they

need. Learn to recognize sleep problems. Common sleep problems include difficulty falling

asleep, nighttime awakenings, snoring, stalling and resisting going to bed, sleep apnea and loud or heavy breathing.

It is true that sleep needs vary from one child to another but the American Academy of Sleep

Medicine (AASM) provides some helpful guidelines regarding just how much sleep children

need at different stages of their development. If your son of daughter still naps, you’ll need to

take that into account when you add up his or her typical sleep hours.
