The food was phenomenal and there was a lot of camaraderie in spite of the shivering and the wind. It turned out to be mostly a Chapter event and was worth every freezing minute! It’s a great opportunity to share your love and interest in aviation with the general public and your fellow chapter members. We will be moving our operations to the new building out by the big hanger and main ramp, instead of the gas shack. This should give us a lot more room, but will require even more volunteers and help to set up. As always, it’s YOU, the volunteers, that make the event so successful. We need ground crew (at least 1 person per pilot), office help, photographers, pilots, people to cook and serve food and popcorn, and most importantly EVERYONE hanging out and talking to the kids and families while they wait for their ride. We will also have an informal cookout for all the volunteers afterwards. If possible, please bring a dish to pass. Please spread the word to all your friends, family, coworkers, neighbors, etc. Without kids to fly, we have no Young Eagles Day. We’d love to have a huge turnout! Questions? From The President ...

I would like tostart by thankingall those whohelped out withthe Open House, especially Al andLinda, and Mark

and Shelly. With their help we wereable to put together another successfulevent, although once again a little helpfrom the weather would have been nice.Despite that we did see several walk-invisitors to the airport, more this year Ibelieve than in years past. Thanksagain to all those who helped out.

The meeting was called to order at7:36pm. There were 46 members andguests in attendance.

Dick Searls provided the treasuryreport. Ending balance: $8021.43

Old Business:RV-12 Flying Club Report from AlFranowsky. The build has moved outto the chapter hangar as the weather isgetting nicer now.

Young Eagles - June 9th. We will beusing the new garage next to the bighanger for our office setup. We willuse the main ramp for parking theairplanes.

Pedal Plane Update - there was onework day so far, but needs to getmoving. Contact Pete and Matt if youwant to help.

New Business:Open House committee update - Foodis all arranged and volunteers lined up.Tom Wise is looking to get around 5

warbirds to fly in - 2 TBMs, Wildcat, andBearcat among them. Pete has posteddetails on the Open House on differentweb sites. Pete will also be talking to theMorris Daily Herald to get somecoverage.

Chapter hanger: We have a new freezerin the hanger now with the open housefood. We agreed to buy a new grill forthe chapter from Sam’s Club for $399.Since the grill gets used heavily atOshkosh, the folks that camp at Oshkoshchipped in to buy the grill. Thanks toeveryone who donated to the fund!

Congratulations to Charlie Gibbs onreceiving the Wilbur and Orvill Wrightaward for 50 years of accident free flying!

Chapter 95 Meeting MinutesApril 27th, 2012

The Pedal Plane Project is on theslow track to completion. I had intendedto get more of it done prior to the OpenHouse, but my annual conditioninspection and work just seem to fill theschedule. Now that my airplane is backtogether, almost, I will make an effort toget some time on finishing that project.I’ll send out an e-mail so that anyoneinterested in helping can come by. With the warmer weather and laterdaylight hours it is time to move back tothe airport for our meetings. I will be atthe airport early enough to pull out thegrill if anyone wants to come by fordinner. Just bring whatever you wish tocook. We might even have time for alittle airplane flying too.

I recently spoke with Jeff about thepossibility of making the airport ourregular meeting location. The newFBO building should be completed bythe end of summer and we talked aboutthe possibility of using the garage areafor our meetings, since there would notbe an area large enough in the frontoffice space. I think we should try itand see if it works for us. I am still talking with the WarbirdsSquadron 4 about doing a jointmeeting. Finding a date that will workfor both of our groups has still notworked out, but I am sure we will getsomething together in the near future.

Blue Skies,Pete

Councilman, Gary Moore fromSandwhich - building an RV-7, ArtFletcher from Downer’s Grove, NickScholtes from Morris - instructor atBlue Sky Aero.

Pedal Plane Project Update

On Saturday, April 28th, PeteDeCraene, Mark Kenney, and MikeRuffato went over to Matt and Jana’sand made a lot of progress on the pedalplane. There is still a lot to do and we’dlike to get the plane done and have ondisplay to sell raffle tickets at ourchapter events. The next event is ourYoung Eagles Rally on June 9th.

Contact Pete or Matt if you areinterested in helping.

Keeping the E in EAADon’t get me wrong, there is absolutely nothing wrong with production builtairplanes, however it was really cool to have 5 chapter airplanes fly over to theLewis University airport breakfast last Sunday and have ALL 5 airplanes beEXPERIMENTAL and all 5 DIFFERENT. We had Bill Shain’s Atlantis II,Matt and Jana Trofimchuck’s RV-7, John Musgrave’s RV-4, MattKwiatkowski’s Long-EZ, and Scott Campbell’s one-of-a-kind Edge 540 design.Very cool! Of course we invite some production built airplanes to join us nexttime, too.

NATO Summit TFR - THIS WEEKEND

Just a reminder there are TFRs in place this weekend for theNATO summit. Obviously, you should always check forTFRs before every flight, but please make sure you takeextra precaution to check TFRs prior to EVERY flight onSaturday, Sunday, and Monday.

Requirements for flight and operations not authorized( http://www.aopa.org/whatsnew/notams-special.html )

View the new NOTAM page at:( http://www.aopa.org/tfr/#a=KORD )( http://tfr.faa.gov/save_pages/detail_2_0580.html )

Because TFR airspace frequently changes, AOPA stronglyencourages pilots to obtain a briefing before every flight.

101-years ago is a very long time. Yetin the very hierarchy of these modernmarvels, the ability to recover andlaunch aircraft from the deck of amoving ship stands out as one of ourmost signature of his accomplishments.Which just goes to show you: Sometricks never grow old.

US Naval aviation was invented 101-years ago, on January 18, 1911, whena 24 year old barnstormer pilot namedEugene B. Ely had just completed theworld’s first successful landing on aship. It happened in San FranciscoBay, aboard the cruiser USSPennsylvania, which had a temporary133-foot wooden landing strip built justabove her afterdeck and gun turret aspart of the experiment.

But back then, innovation was afoot.Ely's Curtis Pusher had been fitted witha clever new invention called a tailhook. The idea was to quickly halt the aircraftafter landing by using the tailhook tocatch one or two of 22 rope lines -- eachpropped up a foot above the deck andweighted by the 50-pound sandbagstied to each end – strung three-feetapaart along the Pennsylvania 'stemporary flight deck.

Mark J. Denger of the California Centerfor Military History has now written atidy biography of Eugene Ely whichnarrates this historic day: On themorning of January 18, 1911, EugeneEly, in a Curtiss pusher biplanespecially equipped with arresting hookson its axle, took off from Selfridge Field(Tanforan Racetrack, in San Bruno,California) and headed for the SanFrancisco Bay.

After about 10- minutes flying northtoward Goat Island (now Yerba Buena),Eugene spotted his target through thegray haze – thee PENNSYLVANIA

Ely's plane was first sighted one-halfmile from the Pennsylvania’s bridge atan altitude of about 1,500-feet, andcruising at a speed of approximately 60mph. Now ten miles out from

Tanforan, he circled the several vesselsof the Pacific Fleet at anchor in SanFrancisco Bay . The airplane dipped to400-feet as it passed directly over theMARYLAND and, still dropping, flewover the West Virginia’s bow at aheight of only 100-feet. With acrosswind of almost 15 knots, he flewpast the cruiser and then banked some500-yards from the Pennsylvania’sstarboard quarter to set up his landingapproach.

Ely now headed straight for the ship, cutting his engine when he was only75-feet from the fantail, and thenallowed the wind to glide the aircraftonto the landing deck. At a speed of40 mph Ely landed on the centerline ofthe Pennsylvania deck at 11:01 a.m.

The forward momentum of his planewas quickly retarded by all the ropesstretched between the large movablebags of sand that had just been placedalong the entire length of the runway. And as the plane landed, the hooks onthe undercarriage caught the ropesexactly as planned, which brought theplane to a complete stop.

Once on board the PENNSYLVANIA,sheer pandemonium brook loose as Elywas greeted with a bombardment ofcheers, boat horns and whistles, bothaboard the PENNSYLVANIA andfrom the surrounding vessels.

Ely was immediately greeted by hiswife, Mabel, who had greeted him withan enthusiastic, "I knew you could doit," and then by Captain Pond,Commanding Officer of thePENNSYLVANIA . Then it was timefor interviews and a few photographsfor the reporters.

Ely was immediately greeted by hiswife, Mabel, who had greeted him withan enthusiastic, "I knew you could doit," and then by Captain Pond,Commanding Officer of thePENNSYLVANIA . Then it was timefor interviews and a few photographsfor the reporters.

Everything had gone exactly asplanned. Pond called it "the mostimportant landing of a bird since thedove flew back to Noah's ark." Pondwould later report, "Nothing damaged, and not a bolt or brace startled, and Elythe coolest man on board." (Note:Safety first! Check out Ely's inner-tubelife preserver!)

After completing several interviews,Ely was then escorted to the Captain'scabin where he and his wife were thehonored guests at an officer’s lunch. While they dined, the landing platformwas cleared and the plane turned aroundin preparation for his takeoff. Then theElys, Pond and the others posed for

photographs. 57-minutes later, hemade a perfect take-off from theplatform, returning to Selfridge Fieldat the Tanforan racetrack where anothertremendous ovation awaited him.

Both the landing and take off were alsowitnessed by several of thedistinguished members of both U.S.Army and Navy, as well as statemilitary officials. Ely had successfullydemonstrated the possibility of theaircraft carrier.

Indeed. The US Navy's first aircraftcarrier, the USS Langley, wascommissioned in 1922, eleven-yearslater. But Ely didn't live to witness themilestone; he died just a few monthsafter his historic flight, on October 11,1911, when he was thrown from hisaircraft during a crash at an air show. But 101-years-ago, he merged thepower of naval warships and aviationin ways that remain cutting-edge, eventoday.
