Draymans

A Clean Sweep of Awards plus a nice surprise for The Drayman’s Son

For the first time in CamRA Ely history a pub has taken a clean sweep of available awards.Andy & Jo Pearson, owners of the renamed Drayman’s Son, took over the pub on Forehill last July from the previous owner. Then it was named the Liberty Bell.

They knew a few weeks ago that they had won 3 awards, Cider Pub of the Year, City Pub of the Year and the coveted Overall Pub of the Year but little was Andy to know a special surprise was on the way.

Andy was given a special award reserved for those who have done something in the pub trade differently and for his hard work in learning the industry quickly and for keeping some fantastic beers from local brewers.

Phil Wignall of Ely CamRA was there to present the awards to Andy & Jo, their son James and to Mark Cooney (yes me from Spotted in Ely because I also work there).

Andy was asked to give a short speech in which he thanked all of the customers, Ely CamRA and the local brewers. He went on to say “When Jo showed me an advert for the pub and she wanted to buy it, I nearly had heart attack. I’ve never been in a position where a steady wage wasn’t coming in so when Jo convinced me she was leaving her job to run this place, it was done

completely blind and we had to learn quick. It’s been a fantastic decision and I don’t regret a moment of it. Here we are, less than 1 year old and we have the clean sweep! I would also like to give a special congratulations to The Plough in Little Downham for getting Rural Pub of the Year”

Andy and Jo also passed on a special thanks to the micro brewers, Three Blind Mice who made a beer just to celebrate the sweep. P.O.T.Y as it was named stood for Pub of the Year and sales went down very well.

It is also worth a mention that in just 9 months, The Drayman’s Son has raised over £5,000 for organisations including Guide Dogs and Addenbrookes as well as others.

marathon man

A man from Ely will be tackling the London Marathon for Diabetes UK after living with Type 1 diabetes since he was a teenager. The London Marathon, run on 24 April 2016, sees dozens of Team Diabetes UK runners take to the streets to run the 26.2 mile course.

Paul Sycamore, 32, is running the marathon because he wants to raise money for Diabetes UK and in honour of the support he has received from Addenbrooke’s Hospital.

Paul, who is a plumber for his local company PS Plumbing Services, has lived with the condition since he was 13 years old and says it was a shock to the system when he was diagnosed, despite being aware of Type 1 diabetes as his own father has lived with it since he was 14 years old.

Paul has been training hard for the event and said: “My dad and I have had a lot of advice, support and care over the years and I wanted to give something back.

“I started running a few years ago with a group of friends, we are known as ‘Team Nancy’ in memory of my best friend’s mum who died from cancer. We have run a few half marathons, including the Cambridge Half Marathon and raised more than £5,000.

“None of my friends got a place in this year’s London Marathon, so I’m doing it on my own, but I’m sure loads of them will come along to support me on the day.”

Teresa Strange, Diabetes UK Eastern Fundraiser, said: “The London Marathon is an amazing event to be a part of. The months of training and dedication from Paul will be turned in April into a one-of-a-kind way to see London at its best. Together with the rest of Team Diabetes UK they will raise vital funds to help people living with diabetes.

“Every penny raised will help us to support the 3.5 million people diagnosed with diabetes in the UK so please give generously to back Paul and support their amazing effort.”

If you have a place in the London Marathon but haven’t selected a charity yet, email [email protected].

Flying Scotsman

The world most renowned steam locomotive, The Flying Scotsman was supposed to be passing through Ely on May 25th.

However Cathedral Tours, the operator of the train has decided to cancel several trips planned the renovated engine due to safety fears. Earlier this month, nearly 60 people put themselves in danger as the train passed through St. Noets en-route to Peterborough.

We have just had a lengthy conversation with Tom and Claire from Steam Dreams.

Network Rail have to manage riskand have asked the operator for the foreseeable future to stay away from East Coast and West Coast Lines.

Steam Dreams are planning a trip to Ely near Christmas but it won't be the Scotsman, more than likely the Mayflower.

It is all journeys that have been cancelled. The company hope that once all the excitement of the great machine has calmed down then the tours would continue. He said, “Its the right thing to do but sad for enthusiasts”.

Saftey fears means thatThe Flying Scotsman'svisit to Ely is cancelled

DevolutionEast Cambridgeshire District Council has agreed to ratify a devolution deal worth nearly one billion pounds for East Anglia.

Members of the Council voted to ratify the East Anglia Devolution Agreement at the Special Council Meeting on Wednesday 13th April. The proposed Deal was announced in the Chancellor of the Exchequer’s budget speech in March this year.

Some 22 authorities and the New Anglia LEP for Norfolk and Suffolk had signed to put the Deal in front of their members to debate whether to agree or turn down the proposals, as well as the chance to go back to the Government with new proposals in the autumn.

Wednesday’s ratification vote means that the Council has agreed to move to the next stage with the other authorities about the Deal. East Cambridgeshire District Council is the first local authority to ratify the Agreement in East Anglia.

The East Anglia Devolution Agreement sets out the framework for the devolution of powers and resources to Cambridgeshire, Peterborough, Norfolk and Suffolk, specifically of funding and governance.

Acceptance of the Deal would bring £900 million of new funding to the region for economic growth over the next 30 years. It would also result in a single mayor being elected for Cambridgeshire, Peterborough, Norfolk and Suffolk, as well as an East Anglia Combined Authority being established.

A Combined Authority would also mean the transfer of significant resources and powers from Central Government to the region – at this stage specifically for infrastructure, housing, economic development, developing skills for employment and job creation.

At the meeting, members of the Council were requested to instruct the Chief Executive and Leader of the Council to ensure the inclusion of key infrastructure projects and priorities (as set out below) in the current and future devolution deals for East Cambridgeshire:

- Ely Soham Bypass

- Soham Railway Station and doubling of track

- Ely North Junction

- Newmarket Curve

- Junction A14/A142

- Community Land Trust (CLT) development and related infrastructure

- A10 upgrade

- Improvement to cross country links East and West

There will be another Special Council meeting on Tuesday 28th June, where the Chief Executive will report back to the Council to update members on the implementation of these recommendations.

What is Fibromyalgia?

FMS (fibromyalgia (fi-bro-my-Al-juh) syndrome) is a widespread musculoskeletal pain and fatigue disorder for which the cause is still unknown. Fibromyalgia means pain in the fibrous tissues in the body.

Most patients with fibromyalgia say that they ache all over. Their muscles may feel like they have been pulled or overworked. Sometimes the muscles twitch and at other times they burn. More women than men are afflicted with fibromyalgia, but it shows up in people of all ages.

Rotary News – Camtrust & The

Presidents Night ELY ROTARY CLUB DONATIONOnce again The Rotary Club of Ely have been able to make a further donation to Camtrust, a local charity specialising in lifelong learning for adults with disabilities and learning difficulties.

This money will go towards helping buy essential items for their centre, based at Impington, near Histon, Cambridge.

The purpose is to encourage independence and build the students’ confidence. An example of this is the renovation of old bicycles.

ELY ROTARY PRESIDENT’S NIGHTSaturday was the evening of a great event in the annual life of Ely Rotary Club, for, as with every other Club in the world, the President held his “Special Night”, with sixty-six people this year invited by President John Dennick.

Amongst them were the Presidents of Soham Staploe, Downham Market, Littleport and Ely Hereward, together with Ladies’ Inner Wheel Club President, and Past District Governor John Samuel, who gave a brilliant speech outlining the work of Rotary, and particularly Ely Club.

They all enjoyed a special dinner provided by their “in-house” caterer Margaret Toft, who has faithfully served the Club for nearly forty years, driving down from Fosdike (110 miles round trip) almost every Wednesday for the weekly Club meeting, and for special occasions like this one. That’s over 5000 miles a year!

Entertainment was provided this year with a superb musical show by Harriet Maddox, singing many popular songs from the forties to the present day, accompanying herself on her piano, and with a few “extras” with accompaniment from professional recordings of band background. One “special” she performed like this was “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy of Company B”, one of the most famous Glenn Miller/Andrews Sisters numbers.

During the evening one Member received the greatest honour the Rotary movement can confer on anyone. For his outstanding service to the Club since joining in 1999, Mike Copping received a Paul Harris award, for all his help and assistance over the years, working hard at any project that needed attention.

The raffle, run by Rtn. Viv Doji very successfully made £250, and the President’s Charity £60 over the year, so the International Committee will make it up to £400, to be donated to the Children of Bellarus fund.

Rare Bee Orchids to be preserved with new mowing programme

Rare Bee Orchid plants discovered in Ely will be given the opportunity to flourish thanks to a new mowing programme.

The regular grass cutters, who maintain public open spaces for East Cambridgeshire District Council, recently found a small colony of Bee Orchids, which they mowed around for protection.

This and other sightings were reported to the Ely Local Group of the Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire, who completed a survey of the area, discovering many more plants in the process.

A mowing programme has since been created to enhance these protected plants, with the hope that this will allow them the time needed to fully establish their colonies.

As part of the new mowing programme, grass cutting will be adapted to accommodate the flowering times of the plants. The Bee Orchids will not be in flower until around June or July, meaning grass cutters will be careful to cut around them. The plants will then be allowed to set seed and complete their reproductive cycle before regular maintenance mowing is reinstated.

The colonies of Bee Orchids can mainly be found along the verges of Norfolk Road and the public open space off Beresford Road - sandwiched between Collier Close and Brooke Grove. Signs have been erected at these locations to notify the public and, where possible, attractive paths will be cut around the Bee Orchids in order to retain public use of these areas.

Spencer Clark, Open Spaces and Facilities Manager, said: “East Cambridgeshire District Council has been working hard with Plantlife and The Ely Local Group of the Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire and decided to take part in the scheme for the City of Ely. This will ensure that these rare plants are protected and their colonies nurtured, while maintaining the area for recreational use.”

Dr Terry Moore, added: “The national charity, Plantlife, is promoting a scheme to preserve the roadside habitats of rare wild plants. The Ely Local Group of the Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire decided to collaborate in the scheme with East Cambridgeshire District Council within the City of Ely. I am delighted to say that the plan to defer mowing of certain identified areas until these rare and wonderful plants have flowered and seeded has been agreed.”

If residents spot colonies of Bee Orchids, or other rare plants around the city, they can report them to Dr Moore on 01353 664745. He will then ask members of the Local Group and the Ely U3A Botany group to confirm their identity before notifying the Open Spaces team at the Council.

Cathedral to cathedral

What's the Hereward Challenge?

I aim to walk the 42 miles of the Hereward Way from Peterborough Cathedral to Ely Cathedral

Why?

To raise £500 towards public noticeboards at Peterborough and Ely commemorating the exploits of the folklore hero Hereward the Wake, placed in an appropriate place close to either cathedral or alternatively other relevant spots such as either end or along the Hereward Way long distance footpath.

When?

Thursday 2nd June 2016 - Start at Peterborough Cathedral at 4am.

2 days walking approximately 20 miles each day, finish at Ely Cathedral at 2pm on Friday 3rd June.

It marks the 946th anniversary of the date - June 2nd 1070 - when Hereward, aided by his 'band of men' and a large Danish army, raided Peterborough Abbey, stole gold and silver of such great value 'that no man could reckon it to the other' and made their way to Ely by ship - where he made his famous stand against the might of William the Conqueror. It is one of the legendary stories in the history of the Fens.

What else?

500 sponsors needed to show support for Hereward making a pledge of £1 each will raise £500.

What's the motive?

Hereward's recent rise in popularity in novels and in historical study is at an imbalance with the low-profile he holds in his native Fenlands. The WakeHereward Project is seeking ways to redress that balance - for the enjoyment of all.

And the background?

2016 marks the 950th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings in 1066 - recognised as a pivotal moment in our history. In history, myth, folklore and legend Hereward the Wake symbolises the spirit of English resistance to the Norman Conquest while expressing the fears and responses of an oppressed landed community. His stand against William the Conqueror at Ely passed into legend almost as it happened.

And what's more?

Anyone who feels up for this challenge, come along! Or maybe you will be there at the beginning or at the end at one of the beautiful cathedrals in Peterborough or Ely.

And the greater challenge of the 'Hereward Challenge'?

To encourage others to take some exercise and attempt a stint across the beautiful Fenlands along the Hereward Way. If succesful it could become an annual charity event. June 2nd every year - Cathedral to Cathedral, Peterborough to Ely - 42 miles.

What else are you keeping an eye out for?

Apart from the elusive 'big cat' that is occassionally sighted across the fens, I shall be checking the waymarkers and information signs along the Hereward Way and making a report.

Where's the £500 going?

In consultation with local authorities and organisations questions raised include:

Is a public notice / tourist board / plaque relevant and appropriate?

What message should it convey?

What will it look like?

Where should it be located?

Design, Illustration, Making and Cost?

It will be a community fund of £500 raised by the public to open the issue of how best to spend it on a memorial to the local folklore figure Hereward the Wake on the basis that a memorial would be relevant and appropriate along the Hereward Way, a public footpath named after him.

This is not a charity event fundraiser it is a cause.

Thankyou for your interest. I hope you decide to sponsor this walk along the Hereward Way between Peterborough and Ely on June 2nd. & June 3rd 2016.

David Maile.

Police Security

PCSO Ian Hawkins will be holding two Security Marking and awareness events aimed at marking power tools in response to recent thefts of tools from works vans.

The sessions will be held at Screwfix, Lancaster Way Business Park, Witchford.

The first session is to be held on Monday 18th April, 13.00 - 15.00.

The second will be on Saturday 23rd April, 10.00 - 12.00.

It is important to mark your property, particularly power tools as they are often valuable and targeted by thieves, marking them makes them easier to trace and reduces their resale value making them a less attractive target.

what’s on in ely

1. Use a Facebook page to create your event and add your personal profile as a host.Invitees have a link to see all of the other events you have created.Invitees have a link to like your page.Your personal profile can directly message all of the invitees (however, abuse of this feature can be seen as spam.)

2. Don’t make someone search for information on your event.Make sure the important stuff is at the top of the details section and can be seen without hitting “See More.”

If there is a separate registration website, put that first! At the end of the details section, list all of the links someone would be interested in: main event link, tickets, audio, video, Facebook page, Twitter, Instagram, and all other event links.Third party Facebook event aggregators such as HUGECITY recognize these links and highlight them for their audience.

3. Use Facebook-recognized venues, not addresses for the location.Type the venue name into the location bar slowly. Facebook will autocomplete the name of the venue and then you can click on one of the suggestions. If your venue is not listed, create a venue.VERY IMPORTANT: If you do not have a map on your event, Facebook will not recommend it to friends of your attendees or people in the area.

4. If your event lasts longer than 5 days, create multiple events.Calendars automatically import Facebook events and you will create more friends than enemies if you squat on someone’s calendar for days. Additionally, if you don’t add an end time, Facebook defaults your event to 3 hours long.

5. Never check “Only admins can post to the event wall.”The wall is the best place to engage your invitees. Allow them to communicate with you.

6. Add a cover photo that fits the event and fits the rectangle (714 x 264 pixels). This is just like a magazine cover or flyer for an event. Don’t use the flyer for the event unless you can see all of the information you need in the rectangle.

7. Have one official Facebook event. If you can, make everyone involved in the event a host to your event.Invitees can see all of their friends who are attending without having to look at lots of events. Those hosts can help spread the word about your eventThe true attendee number can be seen a lot easier

8. Use your invites wisely.Create groups of friends by location, interest, work and more.Use Facebook hacks like “invite all of your friends” to invite the groups of your friends to your event. (Abuse of this feature can be seen as spam.)

9. Keep people excited about coming. 50 percent of tickets are sold when you first publish the event. The next 50 percent are sold the week of the event. Someone saying that they are attending does not mean that they will remember to be there.A post into your event wall notifies everyone who has been invited.Post pictures, past videos, reviews and articles written about the event (remember to tag all of the pages involved with the @ function). As your page, send an update for your event. As your personal profile send a direct message to all attendees.

10. Promote your event outside of your circle. Facebook only allows you to invite your friends. Facebook ads give lots of impressions but very few attendees. (It’s not worth the cost.)

Share your event on Twitter and your Facebook page.Share your Facebook event with all of the people involved with your event.Share your Facebook event with bloggers and tastemakers that would care about your event.Share the Facebook event with all of the local event bloggers like: Patch, Scoutmob, Waze, and Spotted in Ely
