WHATS ON

Page 2: E4Ely - Issue 5

As anyone involved will know there have been a lot of concerns regarding Ely College and many parents have been in touch with me over recent months. I was pleased to learn this week

that an agreement has now been reached for a new Trust, Cambridge Meridian Academies Trust (CMAT) to take over from CfBT as the sponsor of Ely College. CMAT currently run 6 schools in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough and has a strong track record in turning around performance at underperforming

school. They will begin working with CfBT in Ely College after Easter with a view to becoming the new sponsor from July.

I will, of course, continue to monitor the situation going forward and will start by setting up a meeting to enable parents to meet the new Trust and raise any questions.

You may know by now that fairer funding for schools across the country is one of my key campaigns. I am therefore extremely pleased that the Chancellor yesterday committed a further £500 million to help with the transition to a fairer national funding formula. There is a consultation looking at these changes which is running until 16th April. With Cambridgeshire amongst the 40 lowest funded local authorities for primary education, if you have views and would like to respond to the consultation, full details are available on the ...gov.uk website.

This months Letter From Lucy Frazer MP

This week sees a big change for us. While we are still learning the best ways of producing this e-magazine week after week, one thing has become clear.

Friday is better for us than a Wednesday. Our working commitments just make it impossible to guarantee the copy be ready and mistakes creep in.

So we now plan to release this each Friday in the afternoon.

You can also get a copy sent straight to your smart device using the Issuu reader app. Just click on subscribe and you will get your copy. It's free to use.

The 3 of us who work on Spotted in Ely are still volunteers, the money we get in pays for the expenses we have and they grow each month when we add new services.

We need volunteer writers, so maybe you take part in a group activity or work for a business

who is very active in the community? Then why not send us your stories and we will feature them in the magazine and online through the website and Facebook.

Don't forget to keep those events coming in. We now have around 100 to post about every 3 weeks. In fact it's grown so much that people no longer say there is nothing to do.

Ely is a great little city and changes are going to be quick and quite large scale for the size we are. 25,000 people now and maybe 40 by the time the housing developments are complete and Spotted in Ely is a great place to keep up to date with what is going on.

Eagle eyed residents may have noticed that the groundwork on the Ely Leisure Development are underway and so a 6 screen cinema and new food outlets will be coming soon.

We also are the only local publication to get a letter from Lucy Frazer, our local MP and she keeps us up to date with what is going on.

Businesses, we need your help and in return we can help you. Become one of our partners and we will introduce you to the other businesses in the area that want to do business with you.

Find out more on Spotted in Ely website.

Last Saturday the Cathedral saw more than £11,000 raised for Grief Encounter organised by Soham local, Jason Fretwell.

Jason, a catering manager for Clare College in Cambridge decided he wanted to help after his wife, Katie experienced the bereavement at the loss of her mother and the charity was there to help. Furthermore, Grief Encounter Founding Patron, Kevin Wells is a good family friend. Kevin as we all know lost his daughter in 2002.

Not content with organising a sell out event in the areas biggest arena, Jason is now training to run the London Marathon on April 24th also to raise funds for the charity. If you want to sponsor Jason then visit: Virgin Money Giving

We spoke to Jason last night and he said, “I really wanted to help the charity as they help my wife get through the loss of her mother and Kevin is great friend and its so nice he could also attend the evening.

“I really wish I could list everyone who helped but I do need to give a massive thank you to Jezzo’s who worked for the whole day leading up to the start, then all the way through and after until 4am. It just wouldn’t have happened without them. I’d also like to say thank you to Sally Bibby and her team at Rose Barn Venues who supplied so much to make the Lady Chapel look fantastic. Finally a thank you to Sid Bibby who came and restored the grass for us.

“I would love to thank everyone but if I try to list them all on the phone now I may forget someone and I wouldn’t want to do that so a big THANK YOU from me and the charity to you”

Established in 2003 by Dr Shelley Gilbert MBE, Grief Encounter is one of the UK’s leading bereaved child charities, providing free, pioneering services and support to bereaved children, young people and their families.

1 in 29 children in the UK under the age of 16 will suffer the death of a parent.Rebuilding a new life after the death of a loved one is hard for everyone, but especially for children and young people. Once the shock and trauma of a life changing event such as bereavement has been managed, finding a way to move forward must begin.

Children have an overwhelming sense of confusion, fear and anxiety, alongside their grief, which must be cared for in order for them to continue into adulthood with a sense of confidence and long lasting happiness.

This is where Grief Encounter makes a difference. We help families address a multitude of challenging issues following the death of a loved one, alleviating the hurt and confusion caused, whilst promoting healing.

East Cambridgeshire District Council is in support of the East Anglia Devolution Deal announced today by the Chancellor of the Exchequer in his budget speech. The Deal will now be put to a debate.

Some 22 authorities and The New Anglia LEP for Norfolk and Suffolk have signed to put the Deal in front of their members to debate whether to agree or turn down the proposals, as well as the chance to go back to the Government with new proposals in the Autumn.

East Cambridgeshire District Council has signed up to an agreement to inform and engage with the public and relevant stakeholders to help councillors debate the proposed Devolution Deal for East Anglia.

The acceptance of the Deal would result in a single mayor being elected for Cambridgeshire, Peterborough, Norfolk and Suffolk, as well as an East Anglia Combined Authority being established.

The Combined Authority would run in addition to - not replacing - East Cambridgeshire District Council and the other individual councils involved, which would continue to operate and deliver local services in exactly the same way as before.

As part of the Deal, the Government is offering over £1 billion of new money to support economic growth over the next 30 years.

The region would also take control of millions of pounds of multi-year, consolidated and devolved transport budget.

A board of leaders would be established to run the Combined Authority and, along with the Elected Mayor, would be accountable for the new responsibilities and budgets that devolution brings.

Cllr James Palmer, Leader of East Cambridgeshire District Council, stated: “I’m absolutely in favour of this deal. It’s a huge opportunity for the East, and being as we are - neighbours with Norfolk and Suffolk - it will be highly beneficial to the people of East Cambridgeshire.

“The new government structure will be a distinctly positive move forward. I’m in favour of devolution from Government, but also of devolved power the whole way down the government structure, to make sure decision making is as close to the people as possible.

“I don’t think people have been well-served by the three-tier system, so the Deal would be a great move forward.”

A Combined Authority would also mean the transfer of significant resources and powers from Central Government to the region - at this stage specifically for infrastructure, housing, economic development, developing skills for employment and job creation.

Cllr Palmer added: “The improved infrastructure that will come from a devolved East will be great for growth, and will present further opportunities for businesses.

“There are infrastructure improvements that different areas of the East all want, and the Deal would speed up the process, because there would be a single, unified voice through the Combined Authority. For example, the A14/A142 junction at Newmarket is not adequate for the amount of people using it. Devolution would make it much easier for leaders to sort out this problem, which would benefit all the different economies around it, including East Cambs.

“Likewise, the duelling of the railway line between Ely and Soham would benefit Soham and Kennet because it would enable hourly services for both, while also benefitting Ipswich and Bury St Edmunds by increasing services on their line.”

Currently, this railway improvement has been shelved until 2019 at the earliest due to a lack of funding and having to wait for the next National Rail development cycle to begin. However, Councillor Palmer insists he would be working hard to bring this development forward by securing money from the Devolution Deal pot in order to benefit the people of East Cambridgeshire.

Cllr Palmer said: “We are in a strong geographical location to take advantage of money aimed at infrastructure, and the duelling of the Ely-Soham line is something I would be lobbying hard for.”

Everyone involved in this process agree they want what is best for the communities of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough that they serve.

Cllr Palmer added: “The East of England is a wonderful place to live, but we want to make it even better, and the Deal brings this plan one step closer.”

The creative writing challenge for East Cambridgeshire children up to the age of 13 has launched its 2016 competition and the organisers are hoping to top last year’s astonishing results. Well over seventy entries were received and the standard couldn’t have been higher.

“It was truly amazing!” says Annabel Reddick from Burrows Bookshop. Along with Mr Simms Ely, her co-organiser of the competition, she read through every single story. Dragons and werewolves, rockets and pirates, they all appeared in a wide variety of fantastical tales, making judging an almost impossibly hard task.

The chair of the judges is Julian Sedgwick, acclaimed children’s novelist, whose Mysterium books have grown rapidly in popularity. What’s he looking for in the winning entries?

“Like last year, I’m hoping to read stories that contain sentences that make me smile, that express a thought simply and elegantly, that surprise, that introduce a character in a few neat strokes, that send a chill down the spine or that make me think. And I hope to read a story or two that makes me sigh and say ‘I wish I’d written that’!”

2016’s competition again has few rules, except that the word limit is 501. In common with Sherlock himself Ely 501 now has a younger

brother – Ely 50Crime – and entrants are invited to choose either category.

Says Julian: “I love detective stories and have read series set everywhere from ancient China to Victorian London to modern day Arizona. Their attraction lies in the simplicity of the set up – something terrible has happened and we need to know who did it, and just as importantly – why. That’s a very compelling story hook, and coupled with our desire for justice, makes for powerful stories.”

Entry forms can be obtained from Burrows or Mr Simms Ely and need to be returned by Friday 25 March.

At a ceremony on Saturday 2 July at St Mary’s Church Ely the winners will be awarded with prizes and will see their work published in a specially commissioned book which will be available at Burrows.

East Cambridgeshire District Council (ECDC) is pleased to announce that positive steps have been taken in light of public feedback to retain the public conveniences at Barton Road, Ely. At the Commercial Services committee meeting on 15th March 2016, councillors voted to keep the Barton Road toilets open.

The matter will now be referred back to the Asset Development Committee for approval on Wednesday 23rd March. Keeping the toilets open is subject to a contribution from the City of Ely Council of £8,000, which councillors have agreed, demonstrating the excellent partnership and collaboration between the two bodies in the interests of the public.

Cllr Richard Hobbs, Chairman of the Commercial Services Committee, stated: “We have listened to the public and the Local Access Group and are pleased to be able to keep the Barton Road facilities open, with help from the City of Ely Council. We are a listening council, working in partnership for the

good of our community. We appreciate that conveniences such as this are incredibly important to the local community and we will continue to work

hard to meet those requirements wherever possible.”

The proposal to keep the Barton Road facilities open will benefit residents of and visitors to Ely, in addition to the existing three conveniences in the city. The Barton Road site is also particularly useful for those using the popular coach drop-off and pick-up area and car park. ECDC is keenly aware of the need to provide fully accessible facilities for the Ely community and is therefore pleased with the decision for the Barton Road facilities to remain open, in partnership with the City of Ely Council.

It was also decided that Fordham’s public convenience retention will be referred to the Asset Development Committee, and its management transferred to Fordham Parish Council.

The final decision will be announced following the Asset Development Meeting on 23rd March.

Over the weekend Sgt Jon Hiron was targeted by a phishing scam that arrived in his text message inbox on his mobile phone.

Having been out on a long distance cycle ride Jon received a notification purporting to be from 'Barclays Bank'. The message claimed that a transaction had been made to a value of £1976 - quite alarmingly - at the 'Apple Online Store'. It requested contact if this transaction was not made by himself.

The text message (shown in the picture) is really very convincing and actually came through on a chain of other legitimate Barclays Bank text messages - which seemed to corroborate it's legitimacy.

On this basis Jon made the call to the number shown - an 0330 number.

He spoke to a lady who then reassured him that she would close down the transaction, and sent

him through some authentication software, asking him to enter codes that she generated for him, and some personal information.

Jon became wary when it appeared to him that he was being asked to complete a form that was asking him to transfer a sum of £45,000 out of his account.

When he challenged this the female voice tried to reassure him that everything was fine, and that it just 'looked like that'.

When Jon then said that he would visit his local branch in person, the caller hastily terminated the call, hanging up.

Jon subsequently checked his account and it became clear that the offender had setup a loan for £50,000 in Jon's name, and the funds had been credited to his bank account.

The contact was apparently attempting to extract those funds and transfer them elsewhere.

Sgt Hiron has said:

"I'm not a gullible guy - I've seen all sorts of things and I have years of service dealing with criminals. The fact that the text message arrived apparently from Barclays in exactly the same chain of previously legitimate messages was really quite

convincing - I didn't question that at all.

When I spoke to the lady at the 'call centre' things became increasingly suspicious, until eventually I'd had enough and challenged what was going on.

She abruptly ended the call and I knew it was wrong. I was probably only moments away from crediting £45,000 to somone.

If this can happen to me - it can happen to anyone."

Barclays Bank have been made aware of this incident and they are certainly not the only bank affected by the phenomenon of phising fraud.

If you receive a message of this nature, don't call the number in the text message, call your bank from the telephone number you usually use, or visit a branch in person.

If the situation is legitimate, they will have record of it. Never give out your password, safeword or pin number to anyone purporting to be from your bank.

2016 Event

Volunteering & Networking Date: Friday 10 June 2016 Time: 10.30 to 2.30 (drop in) Venue: Ely Library, Ely, CB7 4ZH Costs: FREE The event is aimed at both local businesses and voluntary organisations operating in East Cambridgeshire. It gives you the opportunity to meet with your local Volunteer Centre who can assist you with any volunteering needs. The idea behind this event is to get business and voluntary organisations working together to help each other, whether this is the offer of HR assistance to a small charity or the offer of somewhere for your employees to volunteer and grow their skillset. The benefits to each organisation will be different. What’s in it for my business? 1. As you may be aware there is the prospect of the introduction

of 3 days paid volunteering leave starting in 2017. Although the policy is aimed at the public sector and companies with at least 250 employees, it may be something that you wish to think about alongside your Corporate Social Responsibility.

2. There are benefits to your employees as volunteering can provide a healthy boost to self-confidence and self-esteem. It can also give your employees some additional skills and experience which can be utilised within your workplace.

3. It would also be a good event for you to attend so that you can make valuable connections with organisations operating in the charitable/ voluntary sector within your local

community. These connections could be the offer of volunteer hours, a financial partnership or the offer of assistance with the voluntary organisations’ HR or PR perhaps. Waitrose donate 75,000 paid hours a year for staff to give their time and skills to support local good causes. For a retailer, the levels of engagement that this generates among staff and the relationships built in the communities where their customers live and work are invaluable.

4. All the above could increase the positive profile of your organisation both internally and externally.

What’s in it for my voluntary organisation? 1. As you may be aware there is the prospect of the

introduction of 3 days paid volunteering leave starting in 2017. This could mean the possibility of more volunteers for your organisation. So where best to start this process than to pop along to our event!

2. It would also be a good event for you to attend so that you can make valuable connections with businesses operating in the local area. These connections could be the offer of volunteer hours a financial partnership or some other valuable assistance such as HR or PR advice.

3. You can also come along to advertise your organisation and any vacancies that you may have.

Overall this event will generate good publicity for everyone.

Zahid, restaurant owner of Sylhet on Market Street in Ely has announced that he is to have a curry night for charity on March 21st.

The kit the First Responders carry with them every dayThe kit the First Responders carry with them every dayThe benefactors to the night will be Spotted in Ely’s own charity of the year, Ely Community First Responders and alongside the sales of calendars we did at new year, hope that with the curry night, we can raise enough to buy a much needed new mobile defibrillator plus other kit they carry with them on duty.

The First Responders are a highly trained group of individuals who are available 7 days a week and aid the Ambulance service in saving lives of local people. They receive no payment or even any expenses for their efforts in and around Ely.

To book a table for the Curry Night call 01353 669 669 during the opening hours of the restaurant. It costs just £20 for a 3 course meal (drinks not included) and there will be 2 sittings at 5:30 and 8pm. Several seats have already been sold, so please book early to avoid disappointment.

Zahid has also announced that extra fund-raising activity will be available for those who cannot attend. You can buy a new Sylhet Take-Away cloth bag for a donation (£5 recommended) from the restaurant.

Last Saturday saw the Cathedral host the very busy and successful Grief Encounter Ball in which over £10,000 was raised.

The event had many suppliers involved and sadly due to the wet weather, the grass around the side entrance was churned up. The Cathedral had not hosted events in the Lady Chapel to this size before so early in the season and thought matting would not be needed.

The money to pay for the damage, an undisclosed amount, would have had to have been paid by the charity or suppliers.

However local businessman, Sid Bibby of Sid Bibby Turf and Landscaping near Sutton didn’t want the charity to lose out or the numerous suppliers (most of which supplied time and goods for free) to cough up the expense.

On Monday morning, Sid and his army turned up, laid new turf and restored the grass back to its original state at only his own expense.

Sid wasn’t a supplier but someone who attended the ball along with his wife Sally who runs Rose Barn Venues and who did supply some of the table decoration.

Local Company Sid Bibby saves the day and a lot of money
