Selfless Sophia to get locks chopped off to help kids with cancer

An Ely schoolgirl is having her luscious locks chopped off to help youngsters who are battling with cancer.

Selfless Sophia Isaacs, 10, is due to have her long hair bobbed at the new Pure Ely salon on July 2 to raise money for The Little Princess Trust, a charity that provides real hair wigs to children who have lost their own hair due to cancer treatment.

Sophia is also gathering sponsorship ahead of her haircut, hoping to raise money for the same cause.

Mother Maria Isaacs said her daughter came up with the idea after watching a television programme about child cancer.

“We talked about it and then it got forgotten about. She then brought it up again.“It’s all her doing. I’m very proud of her. I thought it was a brilliant idea.”

The St John’s School year five pupil’s lustrous hair reaches past her chest – but she’s not having second thoughts about having it lopped off, Maria says.

“She’s not nervous at all. She’s been looking at hairstyles, and tucking her hair into a bob, trying to imagine how she’s going to look.”

A keen gymnast and footballer, Sophia hopes to raise at least £100 in sponsorship.

On her fundraising page she says: “The Little Princess Trust use the donated hair to make wigs for children who have lost their own hair through chemotherapy and other invasive drugs.

“I am very fortunate to have lovely long hair and feel proud that my hair will go towards making a wig for another child. Please help me to raise money for this charity.”

Bottom Sniffer dog ‘grog’ launched in

Soham

Boozehounds beware! The phrase “hair of the dog” will take a whole new meaning this Saturday (May 21) when Scampers pet shop near Soham opens up a ‘pop up pub’ to celebrate the launch of Woof & Brew’s new ‘Bottom Sniffer’ dog beer.

You heard correctly. An alcohol free beer specifically aimed at our canine friends, designed to appeal to dogs’ sensitive sense of smell.

According to Scampers’ Facebook page, “The average dog nose is anywhere between 10,000 to 100,000 time more sensitive than ours.

“Sniffing each other bottoms is more than a doggy hello or ‘hand shake’. Did you know dogs are able to sense emotional status, gender and diet of other dogs.

“With a 96% palatability approval rate Bottom Sniffer also

helps to create an ‘odour’ that gives status and respect they deserve amongst their doggy peers when being bottom sniffed.”

Barking mad or paw-sitively paw-some? Let your pooch try the hooch and decide for him or herself!

Scampers can be found at 25 Northfield Crossroads, Soham, Cambs CB7 5UF.

An Ely mum is delighted that her stolen trike has been recovered by police – and thanks Spotted in Ely followers for helping to spread the word about its disappearance.

On Monday morning (May 16) Heather Brooks was devastated to discover that her unique tricycle had been snatched from her garden in the Cambridge Road area.

But hours later, police had contacted Heather to inform her that the trike had been found.Heather and husband Sammy had built the adult trike themselves, with the help of sons Jasper, five and Reuben, one. They had recently painted it purple and Jasper was “so excited” to be out and about in it.

Neither Heather nor Sammy drive, and the bike had been the family’s main mode of school transportation, as it is too far for the kids to walk to Isle of Ely School, on the other side of the city.

Heather said: “I didn’t know how to get Jasper to school. We had to get a taxi.”

A picture of the bike was posted on Facebook on Monday, and shared numerous times, including 21 times by Spotted in Ely followers.

“Thank you so much.”

A man is helping police with their inquiries.

In a separate incident a red Voodoo Hoodoo 2012 bicycle was reported stolen from Soham Road, Stuntney, on Sunday (May 15).

Anyone with information can call Rory on 01353 664341 or call the police on 101.

Ely SOUP is a new sociable community crowdfunding project , £5 buys you soup and a vote for a local Ely project. We launched and hosted are first SOUP in March 2016 at the Babylon Gallery and raised awareness of four community groups, whilst Ely Milks were voted the winners and took home the door takings of £185. Our next soup is in Saturday 9 July, 12.15pm at Syhlet Restaurant.

Ely SOUP is a non-profit making enterprise, and we are looking for some extra local help in two ways.

Printing: Is there a local business or organisation out there who could let us use their photocopier, four times a year, to print some flyers and posters?

We are looking for someone to sponsor the commissioning of the first ever Ely Soup Bowls! This won’t be a large cost, but as all the money we make on the door of the Soups goes to the person(s) who win, we literally have no spare cash.

We need venues to help host Ely SOUP which we aim to run at least four times a year. We are open to all suggestions as long as the venues have a capacity for 40 + people. We are happy for the venue itself to run a bar, sell soft drinks or run a raffle to help raise money for its own particular cause.

So if you can help out, we would love to hear from you, please contact us at [email protected] . We will of course thank anyone who helps us at our events and throughout our website www.elysoup.com

Do you want to pitch?

Are you local to the Ely area with a project or idea up your sleeve that needs a little help to get off the ground?

There are virtually no limits to what your project can be! It can be for individual, group, or community benefit and anything from an artistic venture to a new business idea – as long as helps support the community of Ely.

It is also open all ages – including children! Your ideas should be well thought-out and if successful you need to be comfortable speaking about your idea on the day for four minutes, followed by answering a few questions from the audience. If this sounds like something for you, why not submit your idea here http://www.elysoup.com/submit/.

An Ely choir has made the finals of a prestigious international award celebrating youth activities – despite being made up of adults.

On Wednesday (May 18) it was announced that Sing! Choirs had made the finals of the 2016 International What’s On 4 Junior Awards in the Best ‘Me Time’ Activity category.

It’s the first time Sing! Choirs has been entered for the awards, which honour the best children’s activities in the UK and Australia – but also contain some adult categories.

Sing! Choirs director Kathryn Rowland said: “We are very excited. A lot of people have voted for us because singing is about taking time out for yourself. A lot of talk about improving mental health is about doing things for yourself.”

Next month the Cambridgeshire based choir will discover if it has beaten the four other finalists in their category to win the award.

With people leading increasingly busy lives, it’s become ever more important to set aside time to do an enjoyable activity, says Kathryn, who runs two choirs in Ely with over 100 members, ranging in age from eight to 89.

“People like the way singing makes them feel. We have a real mix of people of all ages, backgrounds and experiences.

“There are also lots of health benefits to singing. It can improve your lung capacity. It makes you feel better, brighter and happier.”

Singing had helped some members cope with challenges in their lives, Kathryn said.

“It’s extremely humbling when you hear people’s stories. Singing takes their minds off their day. And of course, some people just love to sing.”

Sing! Choirs is coming up to its fifth birthday and during that time, many friendships have been formed.

Kathryn runs both adult and youth choirs in Ely, neither of which audition for members.

Sing! Choirs Sings the Shows will take place at the Bishop’s Garden, The Gallery, Ely, on July 2 from 7pm.

The evening outdoor concert is part of the Isle of Ely Arts Festival. Tickets cost £7 per adult, £5 per child and £20 per family. Children under five can attend free of charge.

Tickets are available from www.babylonarts.org.uk.For more information about Sing! Choirs see www.facebook.com/singchoirs/timeline

Seven Ely supermums have completed a nocturnal London marathon on foot, braving blisters and shivers, to raise almost £3000 for a breast cancer charity.

Team Lantern Mardi Bras were amongst 15,000 people to take part in the London Moonwalk – a gruelling 26.2 mile trek from Clapham Common to raise money for Walk the Walk, one of the UK’s largest breast cancer charities.

While most other people were tucked up in their beds on Sunday night, Team Lantern Mardi Bras joined numerous other Moonwalkers around London’s landmarks, completing the final few miles in their bras to raise awareness of breast cancer.

The team are all connected to the Lantern Community Primary School in Ely – and have already more than quadrupled their initial fundraising goal of £700.

It’s the first time any of its seven team members have attempted the Moonwalk.

Lorna Robinson, whose children Billy, eight, and Nina, five, attend the Lantern, said her highlight was finishing – as the route was incredibly congested and the weather frigid.

Lorna became involved after fellow Lantern mum Charlotte Brady suggested doing the Moonwalk.

“We all know people who’ve been touched by breast cancer in some way. It seemed like a good thing to do – and a challenge.”

Lorna said: “Unfortunately the weather wasn’t as warm as we’d hoped for – so we only did the last few miles in our bras.

“It was nice to walk around the sights of London in the dark. We passed Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, the London Eye, Tower Bridge, Hyde Park. We walked as far as Earl’s Court and back round. The highlight was finishing and getting some flip flops on. The training was worth it.”

Team member Michelle Taylor – mum to Ciara, 11, Erin, nine, Aisling, eight, and Finn, four – said Team Lantern Mardi Bras had initially planned to celebrate the end of their walk by going out for breakfast – but they were so exhausted and cold that they bought some food at King’s Cross Station and had their brekkie on the train instead.

“I wanted to go home and have a bath.”

As her last duty to help with commerce in the City Centre, Lis agreed to formally open the renovated shop which is now home to a wide range of beauty treatments and already employs 5 local people including an apprentice. A subject very close to Cllr Every’s heart.

Lis embraced the new business and said of the new ladies “Its fitting that today we welcome Cheryl, Emma, Ellie-May, Jan & Olivia, who are the Pure Ely team to our wonderful City of Ely.”

It is particularly rewarding to see a really “go ahead” group of ladies who will join our other small, independent businesses who make up so much of what Ely has to offer.”

The countdown has begun to Haddenham’s first ever bead festival – and unlike other festivals, it’s totally free to attend, with free tutorials promised on a first come, first served basis.

People are invited to wear their wellies – whatever the weather – for Bead Festival this Saturday (May 21), with each welly-wearer promised a free gift with their shopping.

“There’ll also be a prize for the whackiest wellies,” says Beadfest host Juliet Browse, of world-famous Spoilt Rotten Beads.

“We thought everyone’s having festivals – so why not have our own? We have customers all over and wanted to celebrate and do something a bit different.”

A bedouin tent will be set up on the village green, offering free workshops on a first come, first served basis.

These will include making a fishtail macrame wrap, festival necklaces and tassel making.

There will also be paid workshops, which have to be booked in advance.

Spoilt Rotten Beads will be open as normal, selling special kits and packs to go with tutorials as well as the normal Aladdin’s cave of beady delights.

Minty, the shop’s iconic bead bus, which has been lovingly restored by Juliet’s husband Stuart, will set up camp on The Green throughout the day, Juliet says.

“People will be able to visit Minty and have a henna tattoo to get into the festival spirit.”

Bead fanatics from far and wide are planning to attend – but for those who can’t make it to Haddenham, the crew at Spoilt Rotten Beads are planning to stream video tutorials.

There will be prizes given out throughout the day on the store’s Facebook page and on their website, as well as videos uploaded onto Twitter.

Juliet says: “We have customers who can’t visit us so we didn’t want to leave them out.”

Donations will be collected throughout the day towards Haddenham First Responders.

An exhibition of contemporary textile work opens at the Babylon Gallery on Ely’s Waterside until Sunday 12 June.

About Stitch – LinksStitch – Links was founded in 2005 as an exhibiting group. The current members are Sheila Cahn, Marilyn Carter, Liz Hunter, Mara Lindemann and Maggie Paykel.

With a passion for fabric, focusing on producing interesting and exciting new work, we are committed to exhibiting high quality contemporary and innovative textiles.

Each member has her own individual methods of working, using very different techniques. This gives vitality, variety and energy to our exhibitions. Belonging to a group helps to spark innovation and experimentation, providing the mutual support that we all value.

Shiela CahnStitching is in my family. My mother and both my grandfathers were Savile Row tailors, and I have been sewing since I was a small child. I graduated in printed textile design, and later in embroidered textiles, exploring my two passions, colour and pattern.

I work from my sketches. Drawing helps me put my thoughts in order, makes me think in a fresh way, and enables me to understand what I am seeing.

Textiles intrigue me because of their sculptural qualities: the surfaces of the fabrics in my pieces, whether shiny or matte, smooth or rough, reflect light in a variety of ways. The material sifts and reflects the light, and the colour is within its body, whereas with paper, the colour and light of the paint sitting on its surface are illusory.

I use translucent natural fabrics, which I hand-dye and layer like a painter working with watercolour, before machine stitching and cutting through, to reveal subtle colour relationships. Many of my pieces explore the transitions of light from morning to night, distilled into abstract expressions of colour on land and water.

Marilyn CarterKeeping a diary and writing poetry has always been important to me. I enjoy the technique of Japanese Haiku poetry. Within the seventeen syllables of each verse I can

react to the world around me reflecting time travelling in Europe and the Far East. Words focus me in on a moment in time.

"Reflections water Shimmering colours Fish leaping."My poetry evolves into my textiles. Tropical Falls and Rzpples, describe vibrant colours, rippling water, reflections, changing sunlight and distorted images. Memories, are paper scrolls of per where the font creates the visual effect.

I use translucent, painted fabrics and papers to cut out text. The negative shapes from each line become distorted echoes of the words. By layering the lines of poetry and echoes I aim to create the atmosphere of the place that inspired me.

Currently, part of my work is experimenting with linear forms. Drawing trees, plants and flowers I focus on lines making patterns. I redraw and repeat linear forms. A Chain Reaction, occurs of linked but changing images.

By scoring, cutting, folding and overlaying textured paper and stiffened fabrics, the textile evolves from 2D into 3D sculpted surfaces. Stitch is used to anchor and define areas.

Liz HunterCloth and Memory

I love cloth for all its infinite variety and uses, its feel in my hands and its ability to shape and hold memories. As a child I watched in fascination as my mother stitched and knitted, I was a quick and eager pupil.

Durham quilts, nightdresses, embroidered bed linen, wedding bodices and teaching samples all made by my mother’s family, have been passed down to me. They fashioned beautiful garments from simple fabrics, wasted nothing, unpicked and reshaped and made patchwork quilts and rag rugs. These tangible memories of the women in my family influence and inspire my work.

These experimental pieces, influenced by my grandmother’s intricate samplers, using only white ric rac and cotton thread to explore pattern and texture.

Reworking the image

Using pieces of boiled wool from an unpicked jacket and inspired by the decaying vegetable plot I pleated, darted and handstitched to form tactile versions. After mounting on plinths they looked like ancient remains and acquired another layer of memories.

Ely artist, Ted Coney has opened his house again for the eighth season to give guided tours around his work. All his paintings are about family life and family relationships and Ted has been working on the same theme for nearly fifty years so there are lots of paintings on display.

‘Don’t worry, I only talk about seven painting on each tour’ said Ted. Each tour lasts about an hour and begins with a short film to introduce the work and ends in the studio to see the latest painting in progress.

This year’s painting, entitled ‘Bicycle Thieves’ is about marriage and changing attitudes to it since second world war. Ted actually made drawings of his 1940 bicycle and uses it in a symbolic way in the painting.

Ted has owned the same bicycle for the last forty years and still uses it to travel to work.

‘It did actually get stolen in Cambridge several years ago’ explained Ted ‘but after five days I managed to track it down’

The bicycle is also featured on Cambridge T.V., in a film made about Ted’s work, as one of six arts programme’s currently being shown.

Shibori (quite unknown to my great grandmothers but a favourite technique of mine). Shibori techniques always leave their memories and ilnprints in the finished cloth. I use rust and indigo that gently fade and stitching that is guided by the patterns and subtleties of the cloth.

Maggie PaykelThe attitude of ‘I don’t know anything about quilts, except they go on beds and keep you warm’ needs to be changed. As a child I stitched and as an embroiderer I taught patchwork and quilting for Julia Caprara. I want to challenge the textile world with the use of unusual but everyday fabric such as paper. A series of paper quilts has led to the combining of both fabric and paper in the same stitched work, where it is impossible to tell the difference.

I scrunch up brown paper and silk cotton which I wash over with gesso, write on and eventually colour with diluted acrylics or even use old pots of silk paints or recycle bits of painted Bondaweb onto the surfaces as well. If I am having a bad day this is time to write those memories into the surface of both fabrics.

Elements of today’s artists are combined into fabric surfaces. The obsessive mark making of Boetti and Linda Karshan, messages written by Fiona Banner in her early work, lines in the work of Diebenkorn and for inspiration, the work of Sean Scully. I can look back at the finished work and be reminded of the stitched memories it contains.

Mara LindemannI started taking photos in black and white as a teenager and this became my first creative work. The arrival of colour film gave me more scope for experimentation. I still take photos all the time but use them mainly for experimentation and recording.

The first time I handled clay I knew that I liked working with my hands and preferred making three-dimensional work, and I enrolled on a 3D Design Course. The material itself intrigued me the feel of the raw and then the fired clay, the colours and chemistry of the glazes and experimentations with form. During the degree course I explored other materials found objects of metal, wood and textile and combined them with the clay.

I now work with felt both handmade and industrial and produce three-dimensional forms combining felt with metal and other found objects. I like the contrast between hard and soft, and use various techniques such as stitching, weaving, bending and painting.

Contemporary art and modern architecture influence my work. High-rise buildings sheathed in glass allow their insides to be seen but also reflect the sky and surrounding buildings. The geometric patterns can be severe, but also pleasing and are broken up by wavy and colourful reflections.
