A New Member onTeam Spotted in Ely

I am very proud to announce to all the Spotted in Ely fans that Tali Iserles has agreed to join us on a part time basis as a journalist.

Tali has been a keen follower of ours since we first started and has even worked on projects with us in the past such as the Random Acts of Kindness project.

Please make her feel welcome as over the next couple of weeks she gets used to how we work and do things and like us already working on the project, leads a very busy life running her jewellery making business, Tallulah does the Hula.

The Ely mother of two says: “I’ve worked as a journalist, both in Britain and in New Zealand, so I’m really excited to be reporting about Ely – a place I feel very passionate about. I’d love to hear and share your news, so do get in touch!” Tali is part time but please feel free to send stories to her at [email protected].

As always we love to get prewritten releases so the best person to tell a story is the person closest to the story.

Council warns against deadly

food supplementEast Cambridgeshire District Council is warning consumers against purchasing any supplements which may contain the chemical commonly known as DNP.

This extremely dangerous and toxic compound is marketed over the internet as a weight loss or body building supplement but, if taken, it can quickly cause kidney failure and even death.

Furthermore, taking this product alongside other performance enhancing drugs such as Clenbuterol can greatly increase the risks of dying. There have been six reported deaths linked to the supplement in the UK and dozens worldwide.

East Cambridgeshire District Council was alerted to the danger by the Food Standards Agency’s National Food Crime Unit. Environmental Services manager at ECDC, Liz Knox, said: “We strongly urge people not to buy or take this product. It is known to cause severe ill health and, in some cases, death. We have been alerted by the Food Standards Agency that this is being sold online as a weight loss product and metabolism booster and we are issuing this warning so that the public is aware of the major risks associated with DNP.”

The deadly effects of DNP, full name 2, 4-Dinitrophenol, have been known for nearly a century. Concerns have been raised by the Food Standards Agency that this product is once again being sold online to unwitting customers.

It was originally used in French munitions factories during the First World War when it was mixed with other ingredients to make explosives. Those workers exposed to DNP soon started to show symptoms of ill health including high temperature, sweating, weight loss and fatigue. Many people died before safety measures were introduced.

Now there are concerns it is available on the black market as metabolism booster, even though it has been designated not fit for human consumption. This chemical product is toxic if swallowed or inhaled or if it comes into contact with a person’s skin. Typical symptoms after taking DNP include pale yellow skin colour, bright yellow urine and excessive or unusual sweating.

The product is also toxic for the environment and may cause fires or explosions if it decomposes. It can be sold as a yellow powder, in capsules or even as a cream.

Steakhouse and Bar in Littleport Closes Without Notice

After 4 years, the former pub in Littleport turned restaurant closes it doors with immediate effect.

In a statement on it’s Facebook page, which appears to be now closed down says:

“The time has come to call it a day in Littleport. Thank you for your support over the past 4 years. If it was for the support and business we received from the community we would not be where we were today. Our other businesses need our full

attention to continue to thrive and focus on our expansion plans.

“We have closed with immediate effect. Thank you and Goodbye Littleport.”

Having been a steakhouse for 3 years, it turned into an Italian restaurant where it is thought it didn’t succeed with people saying it was pricey and not highly visited.

Plans for the large building on Ely Road are not yet known.

Burwell bake sale raises £445 for good causes

On Saturday (May 7), the Co-operative supermarket in North Street put on a raffle and bake sale, raising a whopping £445 for charity. Of that, £220 will go to the Red Cross, the Co-op’s charity of the year, and £225 to Little Miracles, a parent led support group for families in Ely, Cambridge and Newmarket caring for children with additional needs, autism, disabilities and life limiting conditions.

The charity fundraiser was organised by Co-Op North Street manager Steve Smith and Helen Ogden, of Little Miracles. All prizes and cakes were donated by store staff, local businesses and members of the community – including Helen’s mother Nancy Taylor – who’d worked in the former North Street Co-op but left 44 years ago.

Steve said: “Nancy came along to help out. It’s really nice that someone from the community is still getting involved from that store in our fundraising.” The Ely dad added: “We try to get involved in our community as much as possible. “The great weather helped with the turnout but we have a

great community that gets involved and I think they would have turned up anyway. I couldn’t thank them and the people from Little Miracles enough.”

So far this year the North Street branch has raised £1000 for good causes. Steve’s aim is to raise £2000 this year, half of which will go to local charities.

On May 29, he and his wife Angii and children Caiden, seven, and Finley, five, will take part in

the Red Cross’s Red Shoe Walk at Grafham Water, together with North Street store team manager Michelle Martin. Each of the Co-Op’s 22 Cambridgeshire stores has promised to send two representatives along to take part.

Steve said: “The entry fee is £10 – so even without the sponsorship this will raise at least £440 for the Red Cross.” The North Street Co-op has many more fundraisers planned throughout the year, including a Father’s Day raffle in June. Steve said: “There’s some really exciting changes to the Burwell Co-op going forward.”

Mercury transit delights sky

watchers

Astronomers were treated to a rare sight today (Monday) – when the transit of Mercury across the sun was visible for the first time in decades.

Ely Astronomy Club members gathered by the cannon on the green outside Ely Cathedral to watch as the smallest planet in the solar system travelled between the sun and the earth.

Clear skies and sunshine helped sky watchers to view the transit of Mercury across the surface of the air.

Ely Astronomy Club vice chair Alex Simpson said: “In the Seventeenth to Nineteenth Century, transits of planets like Mercury were used to measure the dimension of the solar system.”

A transit of Mercury typically occurs eight to 10 times a century, he said.

“1973 was the last time in which it would have been favorably viewed from the British Isles. I was at my late father’s house in North London. We hoped that we would be able to see it but it poured with rain.”

Mr Simpson added: “Sometimes a transit of Mercury can be seen from the Arctic, Antartica or a tiny little island in the Pacific but it’s rare to see it from the British Isles.”

He did not advise viewing the sun straight from a telescope, as this could cause damage to eyes.

Viva say Thank you

A campaign to help prevent vulnerable young people in particular from becoming radicalised and drawn into extremism has been launched by East Cambridgeshire District Council.

The 3R campaign stands for “Recognise, Report and Result” and gives partner agencies a simple message about how to support young people at risk of becoming involved in extremist activities.

Partner agencies include secondary schools, Scout and Guide groups, youth clubs, parish councils and other groups working with teenagers and young adults.

The focus is on preventing people from being radicalised before they become involved in any illegal acts. Whilst aimed at all age ranges, the campaign has a major focus on young people.

Neighbourhood Support Officer, Nick Ball, who helped launch the scheme, said: “The 3R campaign is not about catching terrorists, it is about identifying people who may be at risk of radicalisation, and supporting them to change direction in a way that will help them.

“The Council’s campaign will give secondary schools and other groups working with young people the tools to help them spot someone who may be heading into trouble.

“We owe our young people a duty of care to ensure they don’t throw away happy and fulfilling lives by becoming involved in criminal activities that can harm them and others.”

This campaign is in line with the Government’s Prevent strategy which aims to stop young people from joining extremist groups by confronting their opinions with alternative, moderate viewpoints. This work does not criminalise young people, but aims to support them.

Radicalisation happens when someone gets drawn into extremism. If someone decides that using fear, terror or violence is justified to achieve ideological, political or social change – this is violent extremism.

Jo Brooks, Director of Operations at ECDC, said: “This is not about singling out certain communities or one group, it is about tackling extremism in all its forms whether it is far right, Islamist, extremist animal rights or other groups who may pose a threat to public safety.

“Quite often it is a vulnerable or lonely teenager who gets hooked into this kind of behaviour online and that’s where community-based support can really make a difference before they get into something more serious.”

Young people who become radicalised do face serious risks to themselves as well

as posing a threat to society. At least 70 British jihadis have been killed fighting for the Islamic State terror group. More than 200 have returned and many now face lengthy prison sentences for being involved in terrorist activities. Some have returned with lifechanging injuries.

Meanwhile in 2012 a right wing extremist was given a 21 year sentence for racially motivated mass murder. He is unlikely to ever be released and is expected to die in prison.

Cllr Lis Every, a member of the 3R campaign project board, said: “This campaign aims to provide resources for all those who work with young people and want to help prevent them from taking a wrong turn in their life. It has been created in consultation with Cambridgeshire Police and is supported by the Government. We are very pleased to be able to provide this information and training for our partners and the public.”

If anyone has concerns that they wish to share, they can call the Police on 101 (or 999 for an immediate risk). Alternatively you can contact the 3R team on [email protected]

Ever wondered what it felt like to be a condemned rioter, awaiting execution in a Georgian gaol?

The Ely Museum will be marking the 200 year anniversary of the Littleport Riots with special events and re-enactments taking place throughout May 21.

People will be able to chat to condemned rioter John Dennis in his cell at the old gaol and visit Ely Courthouse witness the re-enactment of the rioters’ trials.

On May 22, 1816, riots broke out in Littleport after townsfolk demonstrated about rising living costs following the Napoleanic Wars and very harsh economic conditions. Many people were on the brink of starvation and some vented their fury on local businesses.

Fueled by alcohol, protestors went on the rampage in Main Street, smashing houses and shops before targeting the nearby vicarage. They headed to Ely by foot, causing more destruction. The army was eventually

called in from Bury St Edmunds to stop the carnage. The rioters returned to Littleport, barricading themselves inside the George and Dragon pub. Following a gun battle, two men were shot dead and many others were captured and committed for trial at the old gaol, which is now the Ely Museum.

Initially 24 people were sentenced to death. Fearing further riots, magistrates gave the rest of the rioters a reprieve from capital punishment, sending them to be transported to Australia instead, where they faced years of hard labour in very harsh conditions.

On June 28, 1816, John Dennis, William Beamiss, George Crow, Isaac Harley and Thomas South were hanged outside Ely. The following day they were buried in St Mary’s Church and a plaque was installed to commemorate them: “May their awful Fate be a warning to others”.

Ely County Park 1Further access improvements have been carried out at Ely Country Park to enable more people to enjoy a fantastic day out.Access improvement works at the sloped footpath connecting Springhead Lane and the wildflower meadow in Ely’s award winning Country Park were carried out on behalf of East Cambridgeshire District Council.

The specification was developed in consultation with Ely Access Group and included the creation of a resting point, re-grading of the slope, a sturdier, more stable surface and the installation of a new handrail. This work has created improved access for wheelchair users and pushchairs following feedback from regular users of the Park.

The work complements the other access improvements already carried out at Cresswells Lane and Lisle Lane, forming part of the Council’s Ely Country Park Improvement Plan 2015-17.

Ely Country Park 2Cllr Richard Hobbs, Chair of the Commercial Services Committee at East Cambridgeshire District Council, said: “The Country Park is becoming a premier spot for families to enjoy a day out so I am

delighted that we have been able to do this work as part of ongoing improvements at the site.

“We want as many people as possible to be able to enjoy the park, which draws visitors from far and wide. It is the perfect spot for a picnic as children can run around safely and use the play facilities, and for adults there are several lovely walks to try. It is a day out that is suitable for all ages and we wanted to make sure everyone in the community has an equal chance to use the park.”

Community Project and Engagement Officer Lewis Bage, of East Cambridgeshire District Council, said: “The specification for the works was developed in consultation with Ely Access Group, local interest groups and the County Council’s Rights of Way Officer and we were very pleased to take their advice on board. Ely Access Group have been instrumental in shaping the access improvement works and mentioned that a resting place half way up the sloped footpath would be beneficial as they explained that some people may find the camber difficult and need to stop for a moment on their way up. This kind of insight was invaluable to us and we have incorporated it into the design.”
