Shop Local and Keep Local

We have been criticsed by some people in the area of not being receptive to local businesses because we have featured some news articles about a supermarket store in Ely.

Well, we think the opposite! When we see a story about local businesses we feature them the best we can. Just this week we have featured one existing business who has done so well they have had 25,000 customers and another new business about to start up.

We even shared a video from another local business and as a result their own number of followers has increased and the video went from 300 views to several thousand overnight.

None of these businesses advertise with us and yet gladly we have featured them and why? Because keeping local is an important part of what we do.

A lot of local companies advertise with the national chains in Ely and I speak about the newspapers. They are part of a much bigger business, so this is my plea about "Shop Local" which also means "Keep Local".

I have reiterated on many occasions that just because something is printed thousands of times, it does not mean it is seen thousands of times. Being online means we have statistics that prove the validity of an online

presence and the numbers and the power it has to harness new business.

So from next week we launch "SHOP LOCAL, KEEP LOCAL". An initiative that will give local businesses the chance to see how the brand "Spotted in Ely" is more powerful than any printed material and more information will be drip fed to shops and businesses that ARE truly local.

We have also taken measures to remove fake profiles that people have created to use Spotted in Ely and other social media groups. If we suspect any fake profiles, we will pass on their detais to the Police. You may not be aware but creating fake profiles is illegal and we aim to assist the Police in cyber bullying campaigns.

230 ladies from The Red Hat Society descended into Ely on Monday to celebrate their 15th year as a group of ladies who can now say they can.

Julie McGinley, Queen of the Sluice Women Chapter from Downham Market told Spotted in Ely “Every year on April 25th we come from all of chapters to spend the societies birthday together and here we are in Ely.

“The society is made up of ladies who have worked all their lives and brought up children and never had time to focus on ourselves and now this is our time”.

Ladies in the society wear red and purple and each chapter nominates a leader in which they call Queen and between them they decide where to go next after doing what they define as a recce some time ago.

The ladies will spend the afternoon, shopping, exploring and wining and dining at various locations. Some of the ladies told us they were looking forward to lunch at the Old Fire Engine and Poets House.

New Police Initiative Launched to offer Support and Advice about

Healthy Living to Youth

Local Police Crime Reduction Officer, Sue Loaker, will be launching a new initiative in May 2016 which is titled ‘Sue’s Essentials’.

‘Sue’s Essentials’ is a project that is being launched to protect the dignity and comfort of young ladies and men in East Cambs.

We recognise that (unfortunately) there are some people that are struggling to get regular access to toiletries, sanitary items, and underwear. Items that very often, most of us take for granted.

A lack of access to the most basic of items not only causes discomfort, but can also lead to embarrassment and bullying. This can cause low self-esteem and in the worst cases we have seen young people resorting to crime in order to try and get hold of these items.

She have been supported by funding from the East Cambs Community Safety Partnership, and with the energy and good will of other community partners. Sue Loaker has established the ‘Sue’s Essentials Project’.

The project will put together and distribute care packages, toiletries and underwear to young people that are in need. We also aim to offer support and advice about healthy living and personal care.

The packages will be distributed by schools, GP’s Surgeries and will be made available from the foodbank and other easy to access community organisations. This is offered as a discreet service.’

Today Chief Inspector Donna Wass (District Commander), and Crime Reduction Officer Sue Loaker attended Waitrose supermarket in Ely.

Waitrose are supporting ‘Sue’s Essentials’ with the generous provision of a coin bin in their community donation point.

Waitrose and the John Lewis Partnership have given over £14 million to good causes, and the Waitrose Supermarket in Ely donates £1000 every month to local initiatives.

You can support Sue’s Essentials by placing a green coin in the Sue’s Essentials bin when you are shopping in Waitrose.

District Commander Wass has said:

‘We know that when times are hard financially, poverty can push people towards criminal behaviours in extreme cases. We want to do everything that we can to avoid criminalising people – particularly young people – in hardship, and this initiative from Sue is part of a compassionate response to that.’

This project will be officially launched in May, if you have any new and sealed items you would like to donate please drop into Ely Police Station or contact Sue Loaker through social media or on Tel: 01353 656641.

Community spirit high as Queen’s

Beacon burns brightly in BurwellAs many as 150 people turned out to see the lighting of the Queen’s Birthday Beacon in Burwell last Thursday (21 April). The celebrations, organised by East Cambridgeshire District Council in conjunction with Burwell Parish Council, began with the ringing of St Mary’s church bells. This was followed by a superb performance from the Burwell Community Choir, who sung beautifully by The Guildhall in their black outfits and blue scarves, covering a range of songs from Waka Waka (This Time for Africa) by Shakira to Bridge Over Troubled Water by Simon and Garfunkel. After a message from H.R.H. Prince of Wales was read to the crowd, everyone sang Happy Birthday to Her Majesty, in what attendees described as a moving moment with a real sense of community. Then, it was on to the most anticipated part of the evening – the lighting of the beacon, which was 2.5 metres tall. The Council’s Open Spaces Team, along with around half a dozen fire fighters, were on hand to oversee the event, and a number of children will have fond memories of getting a sneak peek inside the fire engine. To signal the end of the celebrations, a speech of thanks was given to those who attended, and the church bells were once again heard throughout the village. On a night when the weather was kind (albeit a bit breezy for the choir’s music sheets), the community came together, Union flags were waved, and the beacon burned brightly, East Cambridgeshire certainly did its part to celebrate The Queen’s 90th Birthday.

Council dog warden reminds owners of new rules

New East Cambridgeshire District Council dog warden Jenessa Springhall is reminding dog owners of the changes to microchipping laws that come into force this month.

Now, owners of dogs found by the police or local authorities not to have a microchip will have the benefits explained to them and be given a short period to comply with the microchipping law. If they do not, they could face a fine of up to £500.

The new rules will not only protect the welfare of dogs and promote responsible ownership, but also make it easier to track down the owners of straying dogs.

Jenessa Springhall, who joined the Council last week, said: “If we pick up a loose dog and it has a microchip fitted we can have that pet back with their worried owner within a couple of hours. It saves the pet and the owner a lot of stress.

“It also saves the owner money as we have to charge them kennelling costs if we are looking after their dog. If the dog is not microchipped and it takes several days to track down the owner, they could face a significant bill.

“Most dog owners are extremely responsible and caring and can easily see the benefits of getting their dog chipped. It only costs around £10 to have a chip fitted by a vet and offers great peace of mind. It has also now been made law that dogs have the microchip fitted so anyone who doesn’t comply could face a fine.”

Last year the council dealt with nearly 100 stray dogs in the District. Many of these were successfully reunited with their owners even though some did not have microchips or had incorrect owner details. It is much easier and quicker for the Council to contact the rightful owner of a dog if it is microchipped and the details are held on a national database.

Karen See, Senior Environmental Health Officer said “We are a nation of dog lovers and the majority of dog owners are responsible and do whatever is required to make sure their pets stay safe

Microchipping dogs will not only help to reunite people with their lost or stolen pets, but also help to tackle the growing problem of irresponsible dog owners who may not be so caring. This will help to relieve the burden placed on animal charities and local authorities, who have to deal with many hundreds of unwanted and stray dogs every year.”

Jenessa Springhall’s role as Dog Warden includes collecting stray dogs and helping to trace owners, but she also deals with complaints about dog on dog aggression and noise nuisance. If a dog attacks a person it should be reported directly to the Police.

To get in touch with the Dog Warden about any concerns regarding stray or nuisance dogs please call East Cambridgeshire District council on 01353 665555.
