Queens Birthday Celebrations in Ely
Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was 90 yesterday and Ely celebrated it in its own unique way.
Over 200 people attended the Market Place along with Ely's Mayor, Cllr Lis Every and other dignitaries from the area.
The Cathedral got involved by turning the Octogon tower from its usually evening white colour to that of Red, White & Blue and will be doing so until after it's Evensong for the Queen on Sunday evening.
Local Girlguides atteneded along with many families to hear the Ely Military Band play classics such as Rule Britania and Land of Hope & Glory and many more to which the standing audience enjoyed.
Her Majesty spent the day at Windsor with family and celebrated the day with a walk to celebrate the 63 nations of the commonwealth followed by the lighting of the beacons.
Charity of the year partnership
announced! Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust (ACT) is delighted to announce the launch of a new partnership in the year Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge, is celebrating its 250th anniversary.
Mick George Limited, one of the leading suppliers to the construction industry in East Anglia and the East Midlands, is partnering with ACT to improve the experience for patients and their loved ones whilst being treating at Addenbrooke’s and the Rosie hospitals.
Mick George Limited has set a target in excess of £100,000 to be achieved through a variety of carefully scheduled fundraising campaigns throughout the year, starting with a charity football match on Sunday April 24.
Later in the year, Mick George Limited will be raising vital funds through an exciting football tournament when they will be inviting local businesses and communities to participate. They will also be donating money from online orders through their website and supporting the recently launched Addenbrooke’s Charity Lottery.
To help celebrate the momentous occasion of the hospital’s 250th anniversary, the company is also challenging each of its employees to use their entrepreneurial spirit to raise £250 each for the cause as well as completing a ‘Tour De Mick’ 250 mile relay cycle ride for between their various operating sites.
Jon Stump, Finance Director at Mick George Limited said: “The hospital has earned the reputation of being among the world’s best academic healthcare organisations and Mick George Limited are tremendously proud to be working in partnership
with such a prestigious charity. The fantastic work the hospital does to help improve the health of its patients isn’t possible without the appropriate resource to fund its clinical research programme, innovative technologies and specialist staff made possible by ACT. We hope the quality service in which the hospital prides itself on will continue to improve with our assistance”
Carla Brown, Corporate Fundraising Manager at Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust said: “Everyone at ACT is over the moon to be embarking on a partnership with the team at Mick George Limited. We are so pleased that they have chosen to support the work of Addenbrooke’s and the Rosie hospitals and dedicate commitment to the thousands of patients that are treated at the hospitals every year, not to mention their family and friends. It is well known that the company are focused on giving back to the community and we are excited about strengthening and developing this endeavour in the future with a variety of fundraising activities.’’
For more information on corporate giving in support of Addenbrooke’s and the Rosie hospitals contact Carla Brown, Corporate Fundraising Manager at ACT on 01223 348531 or [email protected].

Cambridge United helps Mayor continues her Celebration of
VolunteeringAs part of the Mayors Celebration of Volunteering two events were held this last weekend.
On Friday evening hosted by St Peters Church Ely and sponsored by the Rotary Club of Ely (Hereward) Dave Doggett, the Chairman of Cambridge United Football Club spoke on volunteering and the role of the Club in the community The latter involvement surprised many of the audience who did not appreciate the excellent influence the Club has on youth by attending schools tackling issues of numeracy, literacy and bullying. Also that the Club hosts a weekly lunch with entertainment for local pensioners. Some memorabilia was sold and total proceeds of approx £500 will co to the Ely Volunteer Centre as part of the Mayors Charity objectives.
On Saturday in appalling weather conditions the Mayor, Members of the Volunteer Centre and the
Rotary Club of Ely (Hereward) attempted to lay a mile of coins down the High Street whilst it was shut to traffic with the proceeds going to the Volunteer Centre via the Mayors Charity. Those who turned up and braved the weather are to be applauded . Because of the weather speed restriction were in force and a valiant distance of 200 yards was achieved

Roll up for the World
Eel Throwing Competition
How far could you throw an eel? That will be the question on everyone’s lips at the World Eel Throwing competition taking place on Eel Day which is part of Ely’s Eel Festival Weekend this Spring Bank Holiday.
No actual eels will be harmed in the contest – the organisers use toy eels. It is all part of the fun and just one of the eel-related activities happening across the weekend which runs from April 29 to May 2 in celebration of all things eel.
The weekend launches with a Business Eel Throwing Competition on the Friday at 11am at Ely’s Market Place where local traders compete for a trophy and title of City Centre Eel Throwing Business of the Year. No training, equipment or special clothing required, just the ability to throw a stuffed sock in the shape of an eel!
Visitors will also be spoiled for choice at the eel-themed food safari taking place all round the town at Ely’s cafes, restaurants and food venues. Look out for the Eel Food Safari logo being displayed at participating venues. Alternatively, download a copy of the map at www.visitely.org.uk or pick up a printed version at Ely Tourist Information Centre.
Tracey Harding, Tourism and Town Centres Manager, said: “This is always a fantastic weekend with so many businesses and organisations taking part. Along with our attractions, shops and markets, the visitors to Ely this weekend have so much to see and do.”
On Saturday, festival visitors will be able to enjoy a family fun day that includes the famous Eel Parade. Celebrating over 10 years of this quirky festival, the annual Eel Day Parade begins at 10.30am from Cross Green (adjacent
to Ely Cathedral). Ely’s ‘Ellie the Eel’ will be heading the carnival inspired procession along part of the City’s Eel Trail Heritage Walk – everyone is welcome to join in!
The eels are followed by Ely’s Samba Band which leads the parade down to the Waterside and into Jubilee Gardens where a whole host of eel-related activities will be held. Special highlights include the Town Criers’ Competition where our very own Town Crier, Avril Hayter, arranges for Criers to descend upon Ely to add their finery and bell ringing to the event.
There is also a full programme of arena events in Jubilee Gardens including Folk Music, Eel Pottery Workshops, Music and Dancing, Historical Displays and Re-enactments with lots of family participation opportunities. As you would imagine, eels feature massively in the day and there will be the chance to see live eels. Obviously it wouldn’t be Eel Day without the opportunity to sample what was once a staple food in the Fens, so this is your chance to taste smoked and jellied eels as well as more conventional forms of food.
The weekend culminates in the two day Food and Drink Festival on Palace Green running from 10.30am to 4.30pm daily. Check out www.visitely.org.uk for the full line up of celebrity and local chefs demonstrating in our fabulous Cookery Theatre.
There’s so much for all the family to enjoy over the Bank Holiday weekend as Ely Market Place will also be holding their Mayday Markets weekend on Saturday 30 April and Sunday & Bank Holiday Monday 1 & 2 May.
Saturday's weekly Craft Market will have arts, crafts, vintage goods, retro artefacts and collectables, as well as a delicious offering of street food including burritos, Thai noodles, dim sum dumplings and more traditional fare.
Mayday Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday have a great mix of stalls, children's fair rides and family entertainment with another fantastic selection of tasty street food to go.
Check out www.visitely.org for more detailed information, call into the Tourist Information Centre or follow @ElyMarkets and @Visitely.
Six more local community groups and
organisations receive OWLP funding
Six new projects have been awarded a total of almost £9,500 by the Ouse Washes Landscape Partnership (OWLP) to turn their exciting community project ideas into a reality.
The OWLP Community Heritage Fund, which offered grants of up to £2,000 to groups or individuals whose project ideas have clear public benefits and encourages people to look after, learn about and celebrate the Ouse Washes Landscape, has been hugely successful since launching in June 2014 and this final round was no exception.
The new projects will involve a poetry workshop, reading and competition by Fen Speak; A Festival of Fenland Films by The Field Theatre Group; the development of a Willow Wildlife Wall at Hatton Park Primary School highlighting local wildlife; a Feasibility Study into Public Transportation Options in the Ouse Washes by pjb Associates; a film by Project Hereward which aims to reopen the Welches Dam to Horseway Forty Foot Drain as a waterway for all; and the play The Merrie Wives of St Ives, as part of a community event in the town’s The Old Riverport.
Welney RUG planting orchard trees at Sandgate Meadow Park
All projects will take part in this year’s OuseFest, the exciting OWLP festival fortnight, which takes place from Monday 18 to Sunday 31 July 2016. Last year, OuseFest saw over 3,000 visitors who came to celebrate the Ouse Washes Landscape and Communities. The full programme, which is bigger than last year, will be available in May on www.ousewashes.org.uk/ousefest and at many venues across the area.
Storytelling, Drawing and Stitching Workshop with Jane Frost, February 2016
The OWLP Community Heritage Fund has previously supported 22 exciting community projects, some still ongoing, including the development of a heritage orchard at Sandgate Meadow Park by Welney RUG; a Fenland and Ouse Washes Story Quilt project by local artist Jane Frost; the rehearsal and performance of local plays by the Lavender Hill Mob Theatre Company; and a photography project by PJ.Elements depicting the people who live and work in the Ouse Washes Landscape.
Portrait of Cliff Carson, Environmental Officer for the Middle Level Commissioners, by Pete Johnstone
The Ouse Washes Landscape Partnership is a fantastic local project funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. It aims to connect local people and communities with their landscape, heritage, wildlife and environment in the Cambridgeshire and Norfolk Fens surrounding the Ouse Washes. To find out more about the OWLP scheme and how you can get involved, please check out the website http://www.ousewashes.org.uk, or find them on Twitter and Facebook.

Lucy Frazer MP's Aprils Letter to Spotted in Ely
The rural economy is worth £210 billion per year in the UK. In the villages surrounding Ely, there are many rural businesses making a huge contribution to our local and national economy. It is important for me to keep in touch with those businesses and find out what the government can do to continue supporting rural industries. In early April I met with our local NFU branch to talk about rural business issues, particularly in farming. In South East Cambridgeshire we have everything from food
markets to wine producers as part of our rural economy. These businesses also need good road and rail infrastructure as well as effective broadband and access to grants and I am fighting to ensure that we get all of these here in Cambridgeshire.
The City of Ely Poppy Appeal has raised an amazing £37,670.90 for The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.I would like to thank everyone who has donated to the appeal, who has helped with the collections and counting, the businesses and organisations in Ely who have displayed static boxes and held collections. As ever you have been out of this world.
Your generosity and support never fails to amaze me. This is my last year as the Poppy Appeal Organiser and it's a fantastic figure to leave on. It's been a fantastic team effort and an honour to help such an amazing charity.
Ely now needs a new Poppy Appeal Organiser!! If you are up for the challenge please get in touch.
Thank you Ely.
