What is a circuit?
• A circuit is the pathway through which current travels.

Open circuit
• When the switch is “off”, the circuit is open.
• Current cannot flow through it. The bulb will not be lit.

Circuit diagram A is the same as for Circuit 1 in Fig. E4.6. (The extra line between the two cells is unnecessary but not wrong). Circuit B is different as the light bulb is situated between the two cells.
