Answer any FIVE QuestionsAll Questions carry equal marks

    1. Differentiate between:

    (a) The impulse and reaction turbines

    (b) The radial and axial slow turbines

    (c) The inward and outward radial flow turbines

    (d) Kaplan and propeller turbines. [20]

    2. (a) Define the equation of continuity. Obtain an expression for continuity equationfor a three dimensional flow. [15]

    (b) Define the following and give one practical example for each

    i. Steady flow

    ii. uniform flow. [5]

    3. (a) Explain different factors affecting Mannings rugosity coefficient. [8](b) An earthen channel with a base width 2m and side slope 1 horizontal to 2

vertical carries water with a depth of 1m. The bed slope is 1 in 625. Calculatethe discharge if N=0.03. Also calculate the average shear stress at the channelboundary. [12]

    4. (a) What is the role of volute and vortex chamber in a centrifugal pump. [6]

    (b) What are the operating characteristics of a centrifugal pump? Sketch andexplain them. [8]

    (c) When are centrifugal pumps coupled in parallel? Sketch and explain. [6]

    5. (a) What is meant by geometric, kinematic and dynamic similarities? Are thesesimilarities truly attainable? If not why? [10]

    (b) Define the following non-dimensional numbers: Reynoldss number, Froudsnumber and Machs number. What is their significances for fluid flow prob-lems? [10]

    6. (a) What is meant by boundary layer? Why does it increase with distance fromthe upstream edge? [10]

    (b) Define the terms: boundary layer thickness, drag, lift and momentum thick-

    ness. [10]

    7. (a) Explain how vacuum pressure can be measured with the help of a U- tubemanometer.

    (b) A tank has a base 3m square, from which four sides slope outward at 600 tothe horizontal for a vertical height of 3m, they then turn vertically upwardsfor another 3m. Find the total pressure and the center of pressure on one ofthe sloping sides of the tank. [10+10]

    8. (a) A jet of liquid coming out of nozzle is 25m/sec and it exerts a force of 4000Non a fixed flat plate held normal to the jet. If the velocity of jet is increasedat 30m/sec, find the increase in force acting on the same plate. [10]

    (b) A nozzle of 5cm diameter discharges water with a velocity of 50m/sec andstrikes to a fixed flat plate. Find the force acting on the plate when the plateis vertical and plate is inclined to the jet by 400. [10]
