AppearanceTest

1. Checkthatthemethanol/waterfuelblendhasbeenshippedorstoredintheapprovedstoragecontainermaterials(see“MethanolandWaterFeedstockBlend”document,section4(a),“StorageGuidelines”undertheElement1websiteResources).Deionizedwaterisextremelycorrosivetomanymetalsandrustormetaloxideswillcontaminatethefuel.

2. Pourasampleofthemethanol/waterfuelintoapreviouslycleaned,clear250mlgraduatedcylinderapprovedformethanolcontact.

3. Holdthegraduatedcylinderuptoabrightlight(sun,flashlight,etc)andlookforanysuspendedparticles.

4. Rejectthefuelifanyparticlesaredetectedinthefuel.Particlescancausethefuelpumptofail,clogthereactorandcausepre-maturefailureofthehydrogengenerator.

ConductivityTest

1. Rinsetheconductivitydetectorcontactswithdistilledordeionizedwater.2. Insertthedetectorcontactsintothefuelandmeasuretheconductivityofthesamplefromthe

meter.3. Fuelconductivityshouldnotbehigherthan10µS.Conductivitylevelshigherthanthisisreasonfor

fuelrejection,asfuelcontaminationfromsaltsormineralsisindicated.

WeightPercentMethanolTest

1. Inaclear250mlgraduatedcylinder,pourinenoughfuelsampletofloatthe0.800to0.910rangehydrometer(roughly175mls).

2. Spinthehydrometertodislodgeanybubblesthatarestickingtothehydrometer.Bubbleswillcausethehydrometertofloattoohighandcreateaninaccuratedensityreading.

3. Insertthedigitalthermometerintothegraduatedcylinderandreadthetemperature.4. Readthespecificgravityonthelinearscale.Usingthe“WeightPercentMethanolinmixtureof

Methanol/Water”graph,below,determinetheweightpercentmethanolbyusingthefueltemperatureanddensity.
