Watch this clip from Wall-E and guess
what todays lesson is about
Heres a clue.. Its all about being “Unsustainable”
So… What was Wall-E’s Environment made of?
How many of you here own a mobile phone?
How many of you have owned more than one mobile phone
And… What did you do with the old phone?
LO: To learn about our unsustainable use of
ElectronicsRemember Sustainability means using resources
now sensibly so future generations have enough to use.
On the next task I will show you a Slide for 10 seconds. You then have to copy as much information as you can see down.
I will repeat it several times
What do you think is in a mobile?
What do you think is in a mobile?
Aluminium 20%
Cobalt 4%
Copper 15%
Gold 1%Lead 1%
Silver 1%
Platinum 1%
Nickel 5%
Glass 5-10%
Plastics 25%
What do we do when we are finished with a mobile phone?
Phones are designed to last 2-3 years…
They are “Designed for the Bin”
So what options are there when we upgrade to the next iPhone or Blackberry..
Maybe this company can help????
Why do you think Mazuma wants your old phones?
They buy them, then remove the expensive metals and sell them on…
That’s how they make their money…
However this process can end up being done in poor countries by untrained and unprotected workers…
E-Waste in Ghana
These toxins can do severe damage
To the environment by getting into rivers and then our water supply
Also being breathed in by the workers causing terminal illnesses.
Most people involved in this industry wont live past 40
I personally think the people who make the
electronics should help!
I want you to spend 10mins writing a short E-Mail to the owners of Apple, Microsoft, Blackberry or any other technology industry you can think of.
Explain the problem with disposing of the electronics
Then give a suggestion on how it could be fixed
You Could Start Like this..
I am writing to you to explain my shock after learning about what happens to your products when they are thrown away. In Ghana…..
To sum up…The bottom on the A4 sheet has a stickman on…
In the face, put a if you think you achieved the LO, or a if you didn't.
Remember the LO was To learn about our unsustainable use of Electronics.
The arms represent a Plus Sign (+). On the arms write something that you learnt today
On the legs which represent a Greater Than sign ( )add something you would like to look at in more detail.
