hoofed animals. It weighsonly about 2kg.

Found only in our nature reserves, the lesser mousedeer is listed as critically endangered in
Singapore. Its larger cousin, the greatermousedeer, was thought to be extinct inSingapore. In 2006, it was sighted onPulau Ubin after over 80 years andsubsequent studies confirmed its
surprising comeback.

Male mousedeer have long canines or ̀tusks’ thatprotrude from the corners of their mouth. These tusksare used for defence and
to fight rival males.

Mousedeer play an important role in regeneratingforests. They feed on fallen
fruits and help to disperse theundigested seeds as they move
through the forests.
