WHAT IS E-RATE ?

Provides discounts to most schools and libraries in the United States on Telecommunications Internet access Related Service.

Administered by the Universal Service Administrative Company (USAC) under the direction of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

HOW DOES E-RATE WORK?

Schools and libraries apply for discounts on costs for telecommunications and other services.

If funded they can: receive discounted bills from service

provider or pay in full and request reimbursement.

Program is capped at $2.25 billion per program year.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR E-RATE?

SCHOOLS AND SCHOOL DISTRICTS All public schools K-12 All non-profit K-12 private and parochial

schools with endowments not exceeding $50 million

School must meet definition of elementary or secondary school under state law.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR E-RATE? Continued

LIBRARIES Public libraries Many private, not-for-profit libraries

accessible to public Library must:

Have budget completely separate from any school

Be eligible for Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) assistance in its state.

WHAT SERVICES ARE ELIGIBLE FOR FUNDING?

Telecommunications services Basic Internet access Internal connections, including network

equipment and wiring for classrooms and library

Basic maintenance of internal connections E-Rate do not cover desktop computers,

learning software, or teacher/librarian training.

The District needs a Technology Plan in order to qualify for E-Rate:

The plan consists of four goals: The first goal is to meet the instructional

needs of teachers and the learning needs of the students.

The second goal is to provide training of staff in using technology to teach and learn through professional development.

The third goal is to merge technology into our school districts community.

The fourth goal is to establish, maintain and update our infrastructure for technology in all district schools.
