Equatorial Guinea’s Independence Equatorial Guinea was formerly ruled by Spain. In 1968, Francisco Macias Nguema was elected Equatorial Guinea’s first president, and independence was recognized in October 1968. They celebrate their independence by having a festival.
History of Equatorial Guinea
The mainland was originally
inhabited by Pygmies. The Fang and Bubi migrated there in the 17th
century and to the main island of Fernando Po, which is now called
Bioko in the 19th century

Equatorial Guinea, which was once called Spanish Guinea, consists of Rio Muni, on the western coast of Africa, and several islands in the Gulf of Guinea. The largest island is called Bioko. the total area is twice the size of Connecticut it boarders Cameroon and Galoon.

3rd Equatorial Guineans celebrate the overthrow of President Francisco Macias
Nguema.

Francisco Nguema was Equatorial Guinea’s 1st
president. He was president in 1968 until he was overthrown and was executed in 1979. during his presidency he caused more than a third of the Guinean population into exile.

Equatorial Guinea’s Economy
Equatorial Guinea has experienced rapid economic growth due to the discovery of large offshore oil reserves, and in the last decade has become Sub-Saharan Africa’s third largest oil exporter.
