    Beeline to the Cross

British pastor Charles Spurgeon (1834-1892) began preaching at age16. Despite battling depression and a painful birth defect, he becameknown as the prince of preachers. The prolific speaker and author leftbehind a 5,103-volume collection of work.

When asked about his preaching style, Spurgeon was simple and di-rect: I take my text and make a beeline for the cross. Spurgeontaught his students that from every text in Scripture there is a road to

the metropolis of the Scriptures, that is Christ.

Consider Spurgeons words whenever you read a Bible passage, andsee how you can make a beeline to the cross.

The Week at a GlanceOur job is to love others without stopping to inquire whether or not they are worthy. That is not our businessand, in fact, it is nobody's business. What we are asked to do is to love, and this love itself will render both

    The Undercover Man

While greeting people after the Easterservice, a pastor was surprised to see a

member who rarely attended worship. Heasked the man to wait for him until

    everyone had left.1

When they were alone, the preacher saidto the man, John, Im so glad to see youtoday. Listen, I have a request to make ofyou. I want you, beginning today, to join

    the army of the Lord.1

The man smiled and said, Pastor, Imalready in the army of the Lord.

1Now, John, protested the pastor, howcan you say that? I only see you at Easter

    and Christmas.1

John leaned close to the pastor and

whispered, Im in the Secret Service.
