A Minute or Two Videos Series

This past month, I relaunched my video series “A Minute or Two with Sue” to provide another means of communicating the ever-evolving information related to COVID-19, as well as other timely messages. These are posted directly to my Facebook page, and avail-able on my YouTube channel. My 15th episode in the series is about garbage in our parks and neighbourhoods. Not to use the word flippantly in these times, but it’s becoming an epi-demic! There’s no end to the talking points I can quickly broadcast to a larger audience this way. If you have a topic you’d like me to cover, feel free to contact me anytime: [email protected] Please let me know what you think of these vid-eos. Thanks for watching!LINK: https://bit.ly/2KOWx5d

TogetherFestCancelled

Our local Canada Day event at Churchill Meadows Park — the Canada Day Together Festival — has been cancelled for 2020. When the City of Missis-sauga withdrew all park permits through July 3, the steering committee that plans the annual celebra-tion made the disheartening announcement in April that the 5th anniversary festival would not take place in 2020. There will be no large gatherings or fireworks anywhere in the city on Canada Day. We don’t know how long the Ontario regulations regarding public gatherings will last but certainly our celebrations around Canada Day this year will be different than in the past. There are already some virtual fireworks shows being planned and I can announce those via this newsletter when the date approaches.LINK: www.canadadaytogether.ca/

Interactive Dashboards: The Region of Peel and City of Mississauga have each launched new dashboards on their websites offering data and statistics related to cases of COVID-19.PEEL: https://peelregion.ca/coronavirus/case-status/MISSISSAUGA: https://coronavirus-response-mississauga-1-mississauga.hub.arcgis.com

Stay the CourseEven as the nation and province begin to think about relaxing restrictions imposed as the primary way to slow the spread of COVID-19, residents are being asked to have patience and keep stay-ing apart. This proven strategy is working! We’ve sacrificed so much that to open up too quickly and undermine the efforts invested so far would be devastating – and deadly. I’ve heard this time of isolation and physical distancing described as a marathon: just when we think we’ve made it, and we think we see the end in sight, and we’re about to ‘hit the wall’, we realize there’s another 10 km to go. Let’s stay the course; we can make it to the finish line. It’s about this time in the race when we need to take care of our mental side and push on. Below, you’ll find a link to a docu-ment posted on my website with lots of resources to help with mental health and personal well-being. Please access what you need for yourself and your loved ones. Take care of one another, now more than ever. LINK: http://www.mississaugaward10.ca/2020/04/30/mental-health-and-well-being-supports/

Traffic CalmingLater this month, I will be presenting to the public two recommendations for speed humps on por-tions of streets in our ward. These traffic calming devices serve to reduce the rate of speed and make our roads safer for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists. The streets under consideration are Lisgar Drive, between Doug Leavens Boulevard and Beacham Street, and Tacc Drive between Tenth Line and Freshwater Drive. These two sec-tions of roadway have been identified as the top two on the list warranting traffic calming devices in Ward 10 based on recent speed studies. Due to current restrictions around public gatherings, I will be hosting a digital Open House later this month to receive community feedback on these two recommendations. Letters will be mailed to all homes within the affected area and other media will be employed to promote the Digital Open House. Please watch my “Sue’s eN-ews” for more information and dates.

Traffic SignalsThe City of Mississauga will begin intersection improvement and road construction on Ninth Line at Burdette Terrace and Henrietta Way this month. The work will include curb replacement and curb widening, sidewalk replacement, asphalt paving, traffic signals and line painting. The purpose of this work is to improve north-south transportation capacity and to construct en-trances for the new community centre at Burdette Terrace and Henrietta Way. This work was originally scheduled last fall but was delayed to better coordinate with construction that was happening at the community centre on the adjacent lands to the west.LINK: https://bit.ly/3aX8Bfg

Intersection ClosedThe intersection of Ninth Line and Burnhamthorpe Rd that borders Oakville and Mississauga (Ward 8) will be closed all day on Thursday, May 7, weather permitting, to facilitate the ongoing work at this location where a full roundabout is being construct-ed. Please avoid the area and find an alternate route if you must go out.

Lights... Helmet... ActionEach month, we’ve been taking on a New Month’s Resolution to better ourselves when it comes to Road Safety. Drivers aren’t the only road users out there, so this month we’ll focus on bicycling. With the wamer weather, more and more people are dusting off their bicycles and getting out there enjoying our ward’s beautiful trails and bike lanes. Let’s be safe about it:MAY: I resolve to make sure everyone in my home who uses a bicy-cle has the proper equipment when riding. Wearing a helmet is the law for youths and children, but it makes good sense for adults too and shows a good example. Also required for safey is having a working bell and lights (if riding at dusk or night). Many stores are closed due to COVID, but you can order these online so you’re ready to ride safely.

Congratulations to Paul Mitcham who takes on the role of City Manager/CAO on May 16. Paul was appointed by Council and takes over from long-serving CAO Janice Baker who did a tremendous job in leading Missis-sauga over the past 14 years. (See my January 2020 eNewsletter for more on Janice.) Paul takes on this new role after serving as Commissioner of Community Services for 25 years. Welcome, Paul! I look forward to work-ing with you in this new leadership capacity.

My sincere thanks and congrat-ulations to two retiring deputy chiefs with Peel Regional Po-lice. Ingrid Berkeley-Brown and Dale Mumby have served the force and the community with distinction and will be missed by many who had the privilege to work with them. I extend to you both my very best wishes for a long and happy retirement!
