WelcomeThe City Festival celebrates Leicester in the heart of the city. For ten fun-packed days, from Saturday20 - Monday 29 August, the city will be buzzing with activity for all the family as streets and venuesare filled with entertainment, street arts, sports, culture, music, heritage and more.

Now in its 4th year the City Festival has grown to be one of the major events in our festival calendar.New additions for 2016 include Trolleys, a magical street theatre from Marvellous ImaginaryMenagerie which will mysteriously appear in the city; Light House Keeping a unique showincorporating music and projection and a major international drum and firework show, Clash ofDrums.

Many regular events will be returning this year including the ever popular SportsFest, now calledGet Active! promoting active living and wellbeing activities throughout the city and the Summer ArtTrail, a vibrant programme of exhibitions, residencies, performances, music and family workshops.Firm favourites Sky Ride, Leicester Belgrave Mela, Journeys Festival International and CosmopolitanCarnival will return and there will also be events to celebrate the Old Town including the everpopular Family Day.

My thanks to all those involved in organising the City Festival and I hope you enjoy the events beinghosted.

City Festival Heritage Weekends:Tours and Open DaysSaturday 27, Sunday 28 &Monday 29 August The Magazine Gateway15th century entrance gateway to theformer Newarke religious precinct that waslater used to store the weaponry andgunpowder of the town's militia during theEnglish Civil War. During the 20th century itwas used as a WWI recruiting station.

Interesting features of the building includehistorical graffiti dating back to the 16thcentury. A great opportunity to visit abuilding with a fascinating history!

The Magazine will be open at 11am,12noon, 1pm and 2pm with free publicaccess on the hour. Taster tours availableat 11.30am, 12.30pm, 1.30pm and 2.30pm.Tours are free but limited to 15 per tour andare allocated on a first come basis, firstserved basis. Access to the building isrestricted whilst tours take place. Tours notsuitable for small children and suitablefootwear must be worn.

old town festivalOld Town Festival Family Day Monday 29 August11am – 5pmJubilee SquareThe Normans are coming! This year’s OldTown Festival will be marking the 950thanniversary of The Battle of Hastings andthe Norman invasion which had asignificant impact upon the history ofLeicester.

The brave knights of Escafeld willdemonstrate the ways of medieval combatwith battles throughout the day. There willalso be demonstrations of medievalweapons and armour, plus a tented villagewith Norman artisans.

Throughout the festival jesters and jugglerswill entertain along with children’s activitiesin the colourful medieval tents around thesquare.

William Shakespeare’s HamletMonday 29 August7.30pm (Doors open at 7pm) Jewry Wall MuseumIn commemoration of the 400thanniversary of the death of WilliamShakespeare, The Festival Players TheatreCompany is proud to present the Bard’smost famous play, Hamlet.
