Why research in Islamic Economics and Finance?

• Research in the Quran and Sunna is Fardh (an obligation commanded by Allah) that has to be fulfilled by Muslims.

• Repeatedly, the Qur'an calls the believer to do tadabbur (think deeply, understand, ponder, reflect), to do tafakkur (think on a subject deeply, systematically, and in great details), and ta'qqul (reason).

• The 21st Century is the Information Age and the Knowledge Society. The information avalanche poses a challenge to researchers, business leaders and the public in general. Data and Information is the “New Currency” and the “New oil", a global effort that aims to accelerate and facilitate research data sharing and exchange

What problem (s) we are trying to solve?

• Absence of a comprehensive Arabic online integrated database on Islamic Economics and Finance;

• Absence of a multilingual information retrieval system and document delivery service for Arabic research production: • Peer reviewed journal articles; • University theses and dissertations; • Research reports and studies; • Official statistical reports; • Statistical analysis, etc. • Full text of Fatwa, Legislation, Laws, etc.

Page 4: e-Marefa Islamic econmics and finance data bank

• Absence of institutional support for sustaining availability and accessibility of Arabic and Islamic research production on Islamic Economics and Finance;

• Disconnection between knowledge producers, researchers, decision makers and knowledge managers at global level and within the Arab and Islamic countries;

• Weak research and development in the field of knowledge production and utilization of Islamic Economics and Finance which created a knowledge gap;

• Lack of an one-stop shop for all types of knowledge assets on Islamic Economics and Finance from the Arab world.
