PASTOR’S MESSAGE 3 PASTOR’S MESSAGE 3

Dear brothers and sisters.

In today’s Gospel our Lord commands us: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind”

St. Augustine distinguishes between the heart, the soul, and the mind, according to the three things that proceed from them.

From the heart comes forth thoughts, From the soul proceeds life, and From the mind proceeds knowledge and understanding.

Therefore, in that he says with your whole heart, it is meant that we ought to direct all our thoughts to Him; in that he says with your whole soul, it is meant that we ought to direct our whole lives to Him; in that he says with your whole mind, it is meant that all our knowledge ought to be referred to Him. Saint Thomas explains that this means taking our knowledge captive unto His service; “Bringing into captivity every understanding unto the obedience of Christ” (II Cor. 10, 5).

Having asserted this, he adds, this is the greatest and the first commandment. It is the greatest in its exten-sion; for it is this Commandment in which all the Commandments are contained, because in this Command-ment the love of neighbour is contained according to that which is said: “He who loves God also loves his brother” (I Jn. 4, 21); and, for that reason, it is the greatest.

Saint John of the Cross says that the strength of the soul lies in its powers, passions and faculties. If the will turns them towards God and away from everything that is not God, then the soul keeps all its strength for God alone. It truly loves him with all its might as the Lord himself commands. This should be the pro-gram of our life.

“Finding God in All Things”

The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola (1491-1556) are being offered at SS Peter & Paul Catholic Parish, Xavier Hall in Mankato beginning Saturday, December 1st at 10:15AM. The theme of the Spiritual Exercises is to know, love and serve God in this world. The exercises help us see who we are – one loved by God. They help us realize we are called by God to follow Jesus Christ, who became man over 2000 years ago to show us how to live. He still shows us how to live today. We will be using an established format conducive to the Spiritual Exercises in Everyday Life, in which someone can "make" the Exercises over the course of several weeks. We will begin the exercises in Advent, meet weekly through Advent and Christmas (5-weeks), break for two

months and then resume March 2nd covering the periods of Lent and Easter (8 weeks). Those interested in making the Spiritual Exercises or would like more information should contact Frank & Jackie Cesario at 507-625-2395, [email protected]

What does Catholic Faith Have To Do With Addiction Recovery?

Scott Weeman, the founder of the national nonprofit Catholic in Recovery, is speaking on this topic at St. John the Baptist Church in Mankato on Nov 6th at 7pm. While secular addiction recovery initiatives have saved millions of lives and have been a great good, Catholic in Recovery groups exist in a parallel fashion to offer space to share the riches of the Catholic spiritual life in supporting addiction recovery—it is a spiritual journey as well. Scott will speak of his own journey, and how the 12 step process can be further illuminated by the sacramental and spiritual life of the Catholic Faith.

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
