St Mary’s Church in Barton is looking to beat a world record for the number of hand-knitted Teddy bears. The current world record stands at 15534 teddies! Can you help them beat this?

Some members of the Disabled Club and others in our Winterton community have already knitted quite a number of Teddies. There is still time to have a go as the deadline is for all Teddies to be received before Sunday 20th September at the Barton church so they can attend the Teddy bears’ picnic!

27989 Sergeant George Alexander Hall, 71st Heavy Bty, Royal Garrison Artillery

Born about 1889 in Coalville (Whitwick), Leicestershire, the son of George Alexander and Mary A HALL. In 1891 George was living with his parents in Workington, Cumberland (now Cumbria). His father remarried in 1898 to Maria Elizabeth BAINTON in the Rotherham Registration district and by 1901 George was living with his father and stepmother in Tinsley, Yorkshire. His stepmother and half-sister were born in Scunthorpe.

George’s service record hasn’t survived but according to a 1917 newspaper report, he enlisted into the army in 1908 in Doncaster, when he had just turned 17. He joined the Royal Garrison

78018 Private Arthur John Kendall 7th Battalion, Canadian Infantry

Born 17th February 1876, Frodingham, Lincolnshire, the son of George & Catherine KENDALL. Both the 1881 and 1891 census returns show the family were living in Frodingham, but had moved to Brumby Hall in Old Brumby by the time of the 1901 census.

The 1908 electoral register shows his brother George Albert KENDALL living in High Street, Winterton, and by 1911 Arthur was living with George in Queen Street, Winterton. George and his family continued to live in Winterton until 1914.

At some point, Arthur travelled to Canada and passenger records show him returning via New York, USA and arriving in Liverpool on 31st July

1915 on board the SS Orduna. His destination address was noted as ‘194 High Street, Scunthorpe, Doncaster’.

Canadian service records show Arthur enlisting into the 30th Reserve Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force on 11th February 1916 in Hythe, Kent, UK.

The Circumstances of Death Registers of the First World War gives Arthur’s entry as “DIED” (Pneumonia) At No.4 Canadian Casualty Clearing Station on 11th October 1918, aged 42. Arthur is buried in Duisans British Cemetery, Etrun, France.

In tribute to those who left the town to serve King and Country - and never returned, Out ‘n About is commemorating the centenary of their sacrifice by including their names in the magazine covering the relevant period.

WILLIAM HOLMES 13466, Private, 2nd Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. Killed in action 25th September 1915 aged 19. Commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium.

Winterton Remembers

Below are the stories of the final two WW1 soldiers with links to Winterton, whose names have been approved by Winterton Town Council, for addition to the Winterton War Memorial.

REMEMBERING THE ‘FORGOTTEN’ WW1 SOLDIERS

Artillery and the 1911 census shows George as a gunner, serving with the 71st Heavy Battery in India. His occupation was listed as an electrician and he spent six years there. In 1914 he came home on short leave, and entered France on 15th February 1915.

George was killed in action by splinters from an enemy shell during a heavy bombardment of his battery position on 16th August 1917, aged 28 and is buried in Canada Farm Cemetery, Belgium. His Medal Index Card shows that he was posthumously awarded the 1915 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

Months before Winterton War Memorial was unveiled in December 1920, George’s father and stepmother moved to 23 Park Street, Winterton.

REMEMBERING THE ‘FORGOTTEN’ WW2 SERVICE PERSONNELIn addition to the 16 WW1 soldiers, Winterton Town Council approved the addition to the war memorial of six WW2 casualties who have connections with the town. Here are the stories of three of the men...

1577142 Flight Sergeant Air Gunner Frank Norman Holmes, 582 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve

Frank was born about 1921 and was the son of Arthur Richard and Edith E HOLMES.

Frank died on 4th May 1944, aged 23. The Lancaster Mk III Bomber (ND910 code 60-F) took off from a station (airfield) in or near Little Staughton, Bedfordshire at 22:57hrs. The task was to bomb the aerodrome at Montdidier, France, but the Lancaster crashed at Beaulieu-les-Fontaines (Oise), north west of Noyon.

Frank is buried in St Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen, Seine-Maritime, France.

The 1951 Winterton electoral register shows his parents living at 9 Queen Street.

Photos by kind permission of Robert Lingard, Curator, Elsham Wold Air Museum

136865 Flying Officer Charles Reginald Jaques, 576 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve

Born about 1913 in the Auckland Registration district, Durham. Charles was the son of Tom and Lilian JAQUES. He married Gwendoline Betty Stokes in 1941 Stafford district.

Charles died on 16th December 1943, aged 30. He was part of the Lancaster Mk III Bomber crew (JB670) and had been attached to 103 Squadron from 576 Squadron. The plane took off from RAF Elsham Wold at 16.37 hrs.

“On the 16th December 1943 Lancasters from 103 Squadron. and 576 Squadron at Elsham Wolds were taking off for a raid on Berlin that night. There was low cloud at Elsham Wolds but this was not bad enough to prevent operations. At briefing the crews were cautioned about the low cloud and told that after take off they had to climb away into the climbing pattern until they reached the prescribed height and then head out over the North Sea on the operation. It was stressed that crews should not deviate from these instructions in any way because of the visibility issues.

Amongst the first to take off was F/S F R Scott RAAF and crew of 576 Squadron in Lancaster LM332. Scott and his crew were on their first operation. Soon afterwards they were followed by F/S Richter RAFVR and crew of 103 Squadron in Lancaster JB670. This was a scratch crew made up from members of both 103 Squadron and 576 Squadron, an unusual occurrence.

As Richter’s aircraft took off and climbed away Scott’s aircraft appeared out of the clouds flying directly towards them. A collision was inevitable and the machines crashed head on. This occurred just outside the village of Ulceby and wreckage fell over a wide area. There were no survivors from either crew.”

Charles is buried in Cambridge City Cemetery, Cambridgeshire. Casualties from the Air Force stations set up in the eastern counties during the war are buried in this cemetery. These included Bomber Command bases in Lincolnshire and fighter stations in Norfolk and Suffolk.

Charles’ wife remarried in 1945 to airman Stanley Stubbins of Winterton, and 1949 they were living at 20 Queen Street.

Service records for those who served from 1920 onwards are held by the Ministry of Defence. For more information, visit https://www.gov.uk/get-copy-military-service-records.

4799746 Serjeant Leslie William Hazel 8th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry

Leslie was born on 12th April 1911, in the Ecclesall Bierlow registration district, and was the son of James William and Sarah Ann HAZEL. Sadly his mother died in the same year.

His father remarried, and the 1937 Winterton electoral register shows his father and stepmother living at 49 Earlsgate.

On 3rd December 1938, at St Paul’s Church, Ashby, Leslie married Jessie Ellis FOX. According to a newspaper report of the time, Leslie had up to that point served with the Lincolnshire Regiment for seven and a half years, with the last three years in Hong Kong and India. Later reports state that he

was a Company Quarter Master Sergeant and had formerly been employed at Lysaghts for a number of years, before being called up as a Reservist.

Jessie died in 1942 and by then, Leslie was in the 2nd Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment.

At some point, Leslie joined 8th Battalion Durham Light Infantry and on 9th September 1944, aged 33, he was killed in action in a small village during fighting to establish a bridgehead across the Albert Canal. Leslie is buried in Geel (Stelen) churchyard, Belgium. A letter from the Padre stated that his grave was covered with flowers by the villagers.

Leslie’s father and stepmother continued to live at 49 Earlsgate after the war, up to at least 1951 and are buried in Winterton Cemetery.

In this year’s Queen’s Birthday Honours List, Don Johnson was awarded the British Empire Medal ‘For services to the community in Winterton’. We caught up with Don and asked for his views on gaining such a prestigious accolade.Which organisations have you been involved with in Winterton over the years? I was born and brought up in Winterton, attending the Winterton Church of England School and then going on to Scunthorpe Grammar School. After leaving the Grammar School I trained as a teacher at Hull Teacher Training College and then moved to my first teaching post at Westbourne Street Junior School on Hessle Road in Hull. After two years I moved to Winterton Secondary Modern school, which later became the comprehensive school, where I remained for the next 30 years. At 13 years of age I became a member of Winterton Youth Club where I enjoyed many social activities and sports. Twelve years later I became the Youth Leader at the club and built it up to become a thriving club with 200 members. My colleagues at the Secondary School helped by putting on pantomimes, building canoes, and

Don Johnson awarded B.E.M. helping to run soccer and cricket teams. The club ran a coach to Barton Outdoor Pursuits Centre in the summer where the members were taught canoeing and sailing. Visits to the Army Assault Course at Kirton Barracks were also popular as well as horse riding lessons at Normanby Park. The members used the canoes to raise money for charities by paddling from Ferrriby Sluice to Brigg and back. In those days we had a very active member’s committee who introduced activities such as Film Shows, a 4 lane Scalextric Track, discos and to celebrate the Centenary Anniversary of Winterton Show, a Parade of Decorated Farm Trailers. The Float Parade still remains a major attraction of the Show. In 1965, within a few weeks of starting my career at Winterton School, I was invited to join the Winterton Agricultural Society’s Show Committee, where I have recently completing my second term as Chairman of the Society. From 1972 my role, amongst others, was to organise the Parade of Floats which I did for over 30 years. In 1966 I was elected to Winterton Parish Council, which had 12 members meeting in the staff room at the Secondary School. In 1972 I became Chairman of the Parish Council and started the process of Winterton becoming a Town with it’s own Town Mayor. We achieved this the following year and I became the first Town Mayor, a position I have held on 5 separate occasions over the years. In 1984 I was again elected Mayor and set about getting a new sports-field for the town, a community building and resurrecting the Annual Town dinner. The later was easy and we had a very enjoyable Dinner in the Old School Hall. The Sports-field was more difficult and although the money was in the bank and the land available it was to be a further 5 years before the Town Council agreed to purchase the field on Newport Drive. A community Building took much longer but even

that is now a reality, thanks to a hard working group of councillors and PFA and Dale Park Youth Organisation members. Another voluntary role I have undertaken during the past 45 years is that of School Governor. Initially at the Junior and Infants schools and later as a Staff Representative at the Comprehensive school. Today I remain a Governor at the Junior School, a role which has changed considerably in the past few years. During my school career I set up residential fieldwork courses in the Lake District and North Yorkshire Moors and was privileged to take the First Lincolnshire Cruise in 1968. Later camping holidays were arranged at Coniston Hall and then Langdale Valley. During the 1970s and 80s I took parties to the Isle of Man. A highlight of my career was taking a group of children to the 1972 Munich Olympic Games. Later on I helped with the Isle of Aran and a German Exchange to Lunebourg. After my retirement I returned to the primary sector and still enjoy supply teaching at Winterton Junior School. Throughout my life I have played sport, albeit rather badly, for local football, cricket and hockey teams but now confine my sporting activities to golf at Normanby Hall and indoor and outdoor bowling with Winterton Bowls Club.

When did you find out about the award? I received a letter at the end of April telling me that I had received an award in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List, but was sworn to secrecy until the list was announced on June 12th 2015. Do you know who nominated you? I am not sure who actually submitted the nomination but I believe Fran Fletcher, Sir John Mason, as well as members of various groups I have been involved with over the years were involved in the process, which apparently took over two years. How do you feel about receiving the award? Obviously I am very pleased to receive the award, not only for myself and my family but for all those people who have supported me over the years and taken the time to put my name forward to the Honours Committee. Also the publicity helps put Winterton on the map Will it change you in any way? I hope not, I have too many friends who will keep me firmly grounded if they thought I was getting above myself.n Don isn’t the first Winterton resident to have received the B.E.M. Our Editor’s research shows that in October 1946, Robert Harry Camm of 18 King Street, who enlisted in 1936 and served with the RAF during WW2, was awarded the British Empire Medal (Military Division). Bob was captured by the Japanese in March 1942 in Java, and was eventually released in Singapore in 1945.

Northern Lincolnshire Credit Union (NLCU) has announced exciting plans to work with Winterton 2022 to open up access to credit union financial services for the benefit of all Winterton residents.NLCU, which since April has formed part of Hull & East Yorkshire Credit Union (HEYCU) - the region’s largest financial co-operative - provides a range of services to help people to manage their money wisely, including savings accounts, affordable loans and banking products such as prepaid debit cards.

CREDIT UNION PLANS TO OPEN IN WINTERTONWorking in partnership with Winterton 2022, NLCU plans to recruit a Winterton Development Officer to establish credit union services in the local community. The project hopes to gain the support of the local schools to set up Pennies2Pounds School Banks, which have proved a big success in other areas. The idea is to encourage pupils and their families to catch the savings habit, promoting financial education and setting them up for a healthy approach to money in later life. A credit union contact point will also be opened in the town where residents can access the services at set weekly times. This and the school banks will be run by volunteers who will be specially trained as Community Finance Buddies to help and support people to understand personal finance and how to make good choices with their money. NLCU will also offer local groups and businesses a simple deposit facility to take care of their funds, and business start-up loans for those people with viable plans to start a business.Mr John Smith, HEYCU’s Chief Executive, said, “We are thrilled to be working in partnership with

Winterton 2022 and believe that together we can make a big difference to community life over the next few years, as we have done elsewhere in the Humber Region. “At a time when the big banks are withdrawing from many local communities, we aim to establish a local presence in Winterton, with staff and volunteers that people can trust. As a not-for-profit organisation, owned and run by members in the local community, we are here to look after our members and provide them with affordable and caring services not to make money out of them.”NLCU operates from a branch at 162 High Street, Scunthorpe and already has about 30 members in Winterton but Mr Smith believes many more can be recruited over the next three years with the development activity that this project will make possible.Mr Robin Shawyer, Resident Committee Member of Winterton 2022, said, “We very much welcome the credit union’s plans to establish a presence in Winterton as we believe many local residents and organisations will benefit from finding out more about it and signing up for the services it can offer. It is an exciting partnership and one that should prove very beneficial for our community.”

Hannah Dunkerley, Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research, Winterton Branch Secretary, recently received an award at the Viking FM Future Stars Awards Ceremony. The award recognises a young person who works tirelessly to help others and fundraise for good causes. She said “The evening was absolutely incredible, there were so many inspiring stories from young people across Yorkshire and Northern Lincolnshire.” said Hannah. I was truly honoured to receive the award and did not expect it at all in such a tough category.”In 2013 Hannah took on the role of branch secretary as the organisation began to grow locally. In her role she takes on leading roles in planning and delivering fundraisers, working with both our internal team, and external supporters, as well as representing the charity in the community, all voluntarily whilst studying at the University of York.

STILL HERE AFTER ALL THESE YEARS!

The next meeting of the Winterton and District Gardener’s Club will take place on Wednesday 16th September, commencing at 7.30 pm at the Old School Hall, West Street, in Winterton. This will be a return visit by local nursery owner Neil Timm, who will be giving us “A Fern Update”. This is in response to members requests to cover this fascinating group of plants that have been enjoying a resurgence of interest among gardeners and garden designers.Following our summer break, we look forward to a new season of talks and other garden-related activities and welcome all our existing members and any potential new members to join us. Membership costs just £3 per year plus £1 on each visit. We meet on the third Wednesday of each month at The Old School Hall from September to June, although we sometimes skip December too. There are plant sales, raffles and fun competitions throughout the year plus group outings and a special all-ticket Buffet Evening with a keynote speaker. All funds raised are used to cover the cost of speakers.

It’s remarkable to think that this time last year we were celebrating reaching the £50,000 milestone to have now raised just under £75,000!! September is a big month for us as it brings a big change. After two years of careful consideration, from September 2015 we’ll be changing our name from Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research to Bloodwise. It’ll help us do even more for people with blood cancer. So while our name will change, you can rest assured that what we do will stay the same. This is national change, and we will remain as the Winterton and District Branch, but under the name of Bloodwise. To find out more about why we’re taking this big step there’s lots of information on the national website www.bloodwise.org.uk and please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions. We look forward to becoming Bloodwise with you.In July we officially launched our Skydive to Beat Blood Cancer partnership with Skydive Hibaldstow. We had eight inspirational jumpers skydive from 15,000 raising over £2,500 – we even had a special celebrity guest when Emmerdale’s Chris Chittell (Eric Pollard) came along to support our jumpers. We are now taking bookings for other brave thrillseekers wanting to skydive. We offer discounted jump prices

Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research - Winterton and District Branchof £200 which we’ll reimburse if £400 is raised in sponsorship. Please get in touch if you’re interested in giving it a go! We’ve also been busy getting out in the community over the summer months, with stands at the Winterton 2022 Street Party in May when we raised just under £600, a rainy Appleby Fayre in June when we raised £130, and an enjoyable Winterton Show weekend in July when we raised over £400. We also received a very generous donation in August from the Phillips 66 Limited, Humber Refinery who donated £3,000 to help us beat blood cancer. The Big Copper Count-Up also had a busy end to the school year, having left John Leggott College at the end of May raising £180, it then swiftly headed to Burton Primary school for the last few weeks of term raising just under £400. The 4ft tower is now at Winterton Co-op who are also selling books to raise further funds. If you have any unwanted books you’d like to donate please take them into the store. We appropriately introduce our new name to the community this September throughout blood cancer awareness month and the national Small Change BIG Impact campaign. We will be holding supermarket collections during the month to show the impact that small change can have so please look out for us if you’re out shopping! To find out more about our work and keep up to date with our events please visit our website www.beatbloodcancers.wix.com/winterton and follow us on Facebook and Twitter. We’d like to give our thanks to all those in the community that continue to support our work. You can get in touch with the branch by emailing [email protected]

We inspect the two local landfills, that’s the one at Winterton operated by FCC and the one at Roxby operated by Biffa. At Winterton landfill, the South site continues to receive waste and the North site hasn’t received waste since last Summer. Earlier in July we received reports of a surface water pollution near Winteringham and are currently investigating the Winterton landfill site as one potential source. At Roxby landfill, waste from local sources including North Lincolnshire domestic waste continues to arrive by road. We have continued with our inspection programme at both sites. We have received no significant reports of odour associated with either site. Both landfills hold regular liaison meetings attended by us, the site operator and parish, town and North Lincolnshire councillors.

If you are affected by environmental issues from either landfill, you can report these on our 24 hour a day, 7 day a week incident hotline, 0800 80 70 60.

Winterton 2022 are working in partnership with Crosby Employment (part of Ongo) to support the growth and development of local businesses in Winterton. Through Big Lottery funding Winterton 2022 has allocated grant funding to Crosby Employment to support and help Winterton businesses take on apprentices through subsidised apprenticeships, reducing the cost to local employers.

Winterton 2022 committee member Gwenifer Shawyer commented “We are delighted that the first apprentice under this scheme has been appointed and has started work. We aim to support businesses in Winterton but also to help Winterton young people who are looking to learn a trade or to increase their skills so that their employment and career prospects improve.”

Harry Gregson, a 2015 school leaver and a local Winterton resident is the first apprentice to have secured an opportunity with Durnian Builders of Park Street Winterton through the scheme.

Harry said “I am enjoying the apprenticeship – bricklaying is a trade I want to do”.

His employer Garry Durnian commented on the initiative “This scheme has helped me take on an apprentice and offers great opportunities to young people to learn a trade.”

Crosby Employment employs and supports the apprentice throughout their apprenticeship programme and work in conjunction with local training providers who deliver the accredited training.

Lorraine Charters, Apprentice and Recruitment Consultant from Crosby Employment said “We have an excellent relationship with Winterton 2022 and North Lindsey College and are delighted to be part of this wonderful opportunity to develop local young talent”.

The next apprentice has already been recruited under the scheme, and is due to start in September 2015. The initiative is proving to be popular with local employers and there are a limited number of grants available for any Winterton Businesses to take up this exciting opportunity. Don’t hesitate and grab this chance to support a young person and grow and nurture your own staff. Any interested employers are urged to contact Lorraine at Crosby Employment in the first instance.

This summer we have been pleased to host science workshops for children 3 to 11. Science teacher, Katy Smith from Hedon, East Yorkshire came along with well prepared hands-on activities for the young experimenters. Parents and children had a fun time. I hope she will come again next summer.

As a former teacher, who for 30 years tried to stimulate young people’s interest in science, I was reminded of a statement by philosopher Marshall McLuhan “Anyone who tries to make a distinction

between education and entertainment doesn’t know the first thing about either.”At the same time our longest standing user group, Happy

It checks your vascular or circulatory health and works out your risk of developing some of the most disabling – but preventable – illnesses.Think of your NHS Health Check as being your “midlife MOT”. It checks that some of your body’s most important systems are all running smoothly. Among other things, your blood pressure, cholesterol, and BMI will all be checked and your results given to you.Crucially, your NHS Health Check can detect potential

Winterton Medical Practice problems before they do real damage. Everyone is at risk of developing heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, kidney disease and some forms of dementia. The good news is that these conditions can often be prevented.Your NHS Health Check will assess your risk of developing these health problems and give you personalised advice on how to reduce it. You’ll be invited for an NHS Health Check every five years if you are between 40 and 74 years old, as long as you don’t have an existing vascular condition. At the check, you’ll be asked some questions about your lifestyle and family medical history. You’ll also have some routine tests. From these, your healthcare professional will be able to give you an idea of your risk of heart disease, stroke, kidney disease and type 2 diabetes. It’s free of charge, including any follow-up tests or appointments, if you have received an invitation for a health check please contact reception to book your appointment. If you would like to check if you are eligible for a health check, reception can also advise you on this.Latest Attendance FiguresIn June 2015 96.09% of patients attended their appointment with a GP. Please advise the Practice if you are unable to keep your appointment, as the 3.91% of patients who did not cancel their appointment meant 19 hours of lost GP consultation time.We are working hard to offer patients a variety of ways to advise us if you are unable to keep an appointment. Appointments can be cancelled or changed via the following methods:• Via the telephone with a receptionist (increased phone lines now available)• Automated telephone system – available 24/7• Face to face at the Reception desk• Systmonline• New SMS Service – a text message reminder will be sent to you which will allow you to send a text to cancel your appointmentMinor Ailment SchemeIf you do not pay for your prescriptions some minor conditions can be treated by a Pharmacist for example: Hayfever, Conjunctivitis, Insect bites and stings, Cystitis and aches and pains. Please ask for a leaflet for more information. You do not need to wait to see a Doctor as you can get advice and treatment from North Lincolnshire PharmaciesPlease ask at Reception if you need further information on any of the above servicesPlease visit our website at www.wintertonmedicalpractice.nhs.uk for more information about the Practice and the services we provide.

The launch of our Lunch and Linger last March has offered residents a great opportunity to join others in activities and share lunch at Winterton Community Pavilion on a fortnightly basis. As we work on alternate Wednesdays to the Trinity Methodist Church Luncheon Club people have the option of getting a hot meal among friends every week in Winterton. We have a good core of diners but can accommodate even more. We currently have a special offer of 2 for 1! How does it work? We ask diners to bring a friend and in return the current diner can have a free meal.Instead of talking about ourselves it is far more appropriate to let some of our diners explain how they benefit:Margaret and Bill have given a short explanation of why they enjoy our Lunch and Linger: “We joined this group about six months ago and are very pleased we did.Our day starts at 11.45am with an introductory talk or demonstration by local people on current affairs of interest to elderly and disabled people in Winterton. This is followed by a freshly cooked,

Many thanks to all the people who have donated to Stuart Maw’s sponsored window cleaning and litter picking

days. The amounts raised respectively were £75 for Winterton Care Campaign Group and £125.50 for the Winter Support Fund. The 2nd Winterton Brownies also benefited by £125.50 as the Litter Picking event was a shared effort. Well done to all who took part and helped to clean up Winterton.

We are also most grateful to all the people who have made donations in our collecting boxes at the George Hogg and Jason Gray’s. Another £64.31 was raised. We are now preparing for the forthcoming winter months and invite Winterton residents over 60 who are vulnerable during the cold weather to get in touch

so we can provide them with winter survival kits and make notes of their snow clearing needs. We will be working in partnership with Winterton Town Council for the provision of winter support services. We would welcome extra helping hands for snow clearing and other support duties. If you feel you can help please get in touch for more details. Contact us via email [email protected] or ring 733441.We are still collecting small tombola prizes or donations towards prizes for the TOMBOLA at the Make a Difference Day in October. Your help would be most appreciated. Prizes can be left at Mike Joyce Insurance, King Street. Thank you.Estelle MumbyChair

Funeral tributes designed with care and thought for your special ones.

Firstly I would like you to introduce you to our new President - Lion Paul Wain who has been an active member of our Lions club for over 3 years. He is a retired Policeman who lives in Burton with his wife Jane who is also a Winterton and District Lion.

We had a very busy Winterton Show weekend with our catering tent serving up hundreds of cups of tea and coffee, 25 dozen homemade scones and 50 plus homemade cakes and pies and 22 dozen bread rolls. We want to thank everyone that visited us to sample our wares.

We also came first in the adult section of the float parade - so well done to Lion John Mundy and team for all your hard work.

On September 19th and 20th we have the Winterton Traction and Vintage Rally down at the Show Ground. It will be a very entertaining weekend with plenty to see and do. We have live music throughout the weekend with the beer tent offering real ales. There will be catering outlets, a mini fun fare, trade stands, car boot and at 4pm on the Saturday the Rally will do a road run through the town. There is also much more going on - so come down and support us and have some fun.

If you are aware of any local good causes or charities that may benefit from our help please contact us on 0845 8337515.

We have not received a Police report yet again to include in this issue. However we have been made aware that vandalism is still a problem in the township. But of bigger concern are the recent fire incidents and a sat nav taken from a vehicle in Cemetery Road during the night.Winterton used to be a safe pleasant place to live in but sadly we seem to be on a slippery slope and are rapidly joining the status of other places where people live in fear.

BACK TO SCHOOL

As our children head Back to school we get everything organised, uniform, shoes, bag etc....

Lets not forget VISION.

About 80% of learning is taught visually so it is incredibly important to make sure your child’s eye sight is up to speed.

Younger children can find it hard to explain if they are having vision difficulties or may not even be aware of visual problems, and like so many things, if there is an issue the sooner it is treated the better.

Our Optometrists Dave Wyndham and Lisa Skaff recognise how important childrens’ eye care is and are available to provide a full child eye examinations and offer reassurance and advice to parents, including how to approach school and teachers if necessary.

Should spectacles be required we have an exciting choice of styles including the new “FROZEN” range of frames. Many of our spectacles are completely free for children too.

All examinations for children are provided free of charge under the NHS and we have appointments available to suit you.
