NAVRATRI POEM

The temple priest has rung his bellA cloud of smoke from candles and lamps Haloes the Goddess, glowing bright This beat of drums both maddens and dulls. The incense burns: so heady the musk, Our senses flounder in the flood. This endless chant of sacred words Soon drugs our lips and stuns our minds. The Goddess, always staring down: Her painted pupils cut through smoke And read the secret thoughts we think. We somehow feel this within our hearts To Mother, we know, we bow and pray –Her form not just this image of clay

AMAZING FACTS • The Durga Puja we celebrate in October isn’t the actual Durga

Puja.

• It’s Known as Akaal Bodhan ,an ultimately sacrifice where Lord

Rama prayed to the Goddess before battling Ravana.

• The actual Durga Puja is celebrated in March and is popularly

known as Chaitra Basanti Puja, just before Ram Navami.

• Dussehra comes from the Sanskrit word Dash Hara, which translates to ‘the defeat of the Sun’ in English. According to Hindu scriptures, if Lord

Rama had not defeated Ravana, the Sun would have never risen agai

n.

• Dussehra is celebrated in Ashwin, the 10th month of the Hindu Calenda

r. It falls sometime around October or November.

• In some sub-cultures of Hinduism, Dussehra is also called Vijay Dashm

i, which means victory on the tenth day. It is celebrated as Vijay Dashmito mark the victory of Goddess Durga over the Demon King Mahishasur

a.

• Mahishasura was the king of demons or Asura, and was very powerful.

He would torture innocent people. At that time, Shakti was created by th

e collective powers of Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh to put an end to the

evil doings of Mahishasura.
