LONG TERM EFFECTS

E. coli 0157:H7 is rare and usually passes in 1 to 10 days

Kidney failure and HUS (hemolytic uremic syndrome) are possible to get, which has a 25% death rate.

• HUS blood clots throughout capillaries in your body.

TREATMENTUnfortunately there is no medical cure for E. coli.

The best treatment is to make sure you stay hydrated by drinking lots of water.

PREVENTION!

Make sure to wash your hands often and especially after handling raw meat and going to the bathroom.

While swimming in non-chlorinated water try not to swallow any water.

Cook all meats thoroughly and don’t leave any pink or cloudy liquids.

FREQUENCY OF REPORTED ILLNESSES

Wisconsin had the highest number of cases with 49 that year.

OUTBREAKSIn 1993, Washington, Idaho, California, and Nevada had outbreaks of E. Coli in the Jack in the Box fast food restaurants.
