Crawshaw Academy Redefining the future for people and places e-Bulletin Issue 17: 16th January 2015 Headline…… There are just 62 school days left for our year 11 students before they sit their first exams! As you can see from the participation in the Maths and English support sessions below, many of our students are already making best use of this time. Last Thursday we held our mock examination results day and we interviewed many students who would have been disappointed had this been the real results day in August. They key message from me is that there is time to make those improvements but they need to start now. Attendance at school is critical, as is attendance at these additional sessions. More information will follow on the Supporting Success page of our website. Make a start. Its all about eating elephants…..(one step at a time!) Mr Daly Principal TUESDAY AFTERNOON EN GLISH INTERVENTION A big thank you and well done to the 45 - plus students who attended English intervention this week. A fantastic turn - out! There will be further sessions next Tuesday, including the first exam skills session for all students on the current English intervention rota together with the ongoing coursework clinics for others. See you there! A BIG THANK YOU AND WELL DONE TO YEAR 11! MONDAY AFTERNOON GCSE MATHEMATICS REVISI ON SESSIONS A big thank you and well done to the 76 students who attended Maths revision this week. A fantastic turn - out! We tackled 'strength gaps' from the recent mock exams and students went away more confident in their ability having picked up key exam techniques. Sessions will continue every Monday from 3—4 p.m., everybody welcome!

Year 11 Prom

The first wave of prom invites will be going out before half term. In the first instance we look at students who have achieved 90 - 100% attendance so far; who adhere to school regulations including the school uniform policy; who have not been excluded; who have a reasonable number of achievement points; who are up to date with coursework and who have co-operated consistently with staff throughout their time in Year 11.

A letter should be sent out next week to con-firm the full details.

YEAR 9 FOCUS DAY

This week Year 9 were involved in a PSHE day with a focus on healthy lifestyles. Students attended different sessions throughout the day; each designed to enable students to make informed and sensible judgements about their future lifestyles. There were many activities going on. Students were creating a healthy eating plan, attempting to get their five-a-day through a smoothie making competition (pls see recipe above), and even learning how to combine exercise with gardening! The winners of the Smoothie Competition were:

Wioletta Swierczek, Bethany Worthy, Billy Potter and Dane Mason,

with their nutritional and rather exotic sounding "Tasa Rika".

Each student (and Mr Fowler!) was also involved in some form of fitness session including, circuit training, cardio-vascular workouts and cross-country running. Overall the day was a great success and was enjoyed by staff and pupils alike.

The aim of this procedure is to ensure clear communication between school and staff, students, parents and governors in the occurrence of a school closure or part closure. This procedure should be implemented should the school need to close in situations such as heavy rain (flooding), severe ice and / or heavy snow, heating failure etc. The time at which the procedure is implemented will de-pend on the circumstances but it is set up to deal with closures either prior to or after the start of a normal school day.

Action Plan

If there is doubt as to whether the school should open or remain open, based upon the conditions on site in relation to health & safety implications of students, staff and visitors being in school, the Site Manager (or member of Site Team) will consult with the Principal (or member of the Senior Leadership Team.)If, based on this, the Principal’s decision is to close / partially close / implement a late start,

the following tasks will be triggered:

1. Text message to all staff

2. Text message to all parents

3. Notice on the school website homepage (www.crawshawacademy.org.uk)

4. Online confirmation of closure to Local Authority (triggers local radio coverage)

Early Closure

If the school is already open and issuing an early closure, the above process will be followed. Students will be dismissed once parents have been informed by text message. Rules around mobile phones will be rescinded to enable contact between students and parents if necessary before leaving site. Instructions are held on site (with Student Services) regarding any specific arrangements for individual students. Please let us know of any changes to your priority mobile contact number so that we may keep you informed of possible closures due to severe weather over the winter months. Please also advise us of any specific arrangements for your child i.e. should go to grandparents, parent’s place of work etc.

Any students who need support or to make contact home should report to Student Services and remain on site until instructions are received from parent / carer.
