RELIGIOUS EDUCATION @ NEWMAN… All grades meet this weekend. Please consider joining the Newman Team at the Autism Speaks walk on April 6th! Let’s get all of Religious Education participating!

FAMILY CONNECTION

When Jesus resists the temptations presented to him by the dev-il, he draws on his religious upbringing and tradition. Jesus is able to quote from Scripture because he is the Son of God and be-cause he was a human person who lived his Jewish beliefs fully. We who are responsible for raising children are also called upon to immerse them fully in our Catholic Christian tradition so that they too will be able to draw upon this tradition to resist the temp-tations they will face in their lives. Use this Sunday as an opportunity to call your family's attention to the importance of Scripture in our lives. Gather your family around the family Bible and read today's Gospel, Matthew 4:1-11. Recall that Jesus rebuked the devil's temptations by quot-ing Scripture. Take some time as a family to talk about the words that are found in the Bible and the importance of Scripture to our faith. Perhaps the older members of the family can share a favor-ite Scripture passage with everyone. Younger family members can tell their favorite story from the Bible and be shown where that story can be found. In each case, encourage a deeper shar-ing of faith by asking each person to tell why the Scripture pas-sage shared is important to him or her. Conclude your time to-gether by again reading Jesus' reply to the devil found in Matthew 4:4 (“One does not live by bread alone . . .”) and praying the Lord's Prayer.

SUPPORT OUR NEWMAN STUDENTS ON THEIR SPRING BREAK JOURNEY

Thank you for all of the community support for our group. So far we have re-ceived $1810 from the Ash Wednesday collection, $247 from Dining for Dol-lars at Bertucci’s and $600 from Bake Sales. This will go a long way in subsi-dizing our Alternative Spring Break Trip costs of $8000. We are still accepting donations. Please make checks out to the Newman Catholic Center with Alter-native Spring Break in the memo line and either drop it in the donation basket or give it to Fr. Gary or Fr. Jon.

FOLLOW THE STUDENTS ON THE TRIP Again, this year 12 students and Fr. Jon will sacrifice the sunny beaches of Mi-ami for putting the Gospel into action in the hills of Appalachia, Kentucky dur-ing their spring break. From Saturday, March 15th as they board their vans in the parking lot of Newman to Saturday, March 22nd when these tired young men and women come home to us, we will be posting photos and journal en-tries daily. Follow their journey and their experiences on the Newman website – www.newmanumass.org. They will treasure the thought that they are continu-ously connected with us even though they are so far away from their “home away from home”. Next week’s Communitas…the students’ itinerary for the week and some more information about the community service in which they will be involved.
