Agriculture is a vital part of our state’s economy. The industry impacts every citizen, and the South Carolina Department of Agriculture (SCDA) is always working to help more people connect with agriculture. Many farmers have joined the effort by diversifying their operations through agritourism. Agritourism is agriculture based activities that bring people to farms, ranches or other agricultural settings. Some examples include u-pick operations, corn mazes, farm to table dinners, and on-the-farm restaurants with markets that sell locally made foods. SCDA recognizes the great value of agritourism and its potential to benefit farms of all sizes. THE CATAWBA REGIONAL AG + ART TOUR is a great example of agritourism in South Carolina. Founded in York County in 2012, the tour expanded to nearby Lancaster County the next year. In 2014 sites in Chester and Fairfield Counties were added. And the event keeps growing as the tour welcomes Union County farms and farmers markets this year. Coordinated by a regional leadership team and county-level planning group, the Ag + Art Tour is the largest free farm tour in the nation with over 16,000 visitors participating since its inception.
