Studies of the Proton Properties E. Aaron, M. Benninghoff, J Goodwill, M. Muhoza, W. Smoot with Dr. Fatiha Benmokhtar Protons and neutrons are made from constituents, called quarks and gluons. The goal of this project is to make measurements of the spatial distributions and the momenta of the quarks that provide a three- dimensional map of the nuclear medium. This knowledge provides the basis of our understanding of nuclear matter in terms of the dynamics of their internal constituents. Our group at Duquesne is investigating the contribution of strange quark to the nucleon. For that a Ring Imaging Cherenkov detector (RICH) was built and we present here a summary to our contribution to the project. A full RICH detector is installed and functional. A second RICH detector is under construction and will be built during the next couple of years. We expect our knowledge of the quarks distribution to be much improved than the existing data from Germany. Approach Introduction Status and Expected Results Ref: F.
