Studies of the Proton PropertiesE. Aaron, M. Benninghoff, J Goodwill, M. Muhoza, W. Smoot with Dr. Fatiha Benmokhtar
Protons and neutrons are made from constituents, calledquarks and gluons. The goal of this project is to makemeasurements of the spatial distributionsand the momenta of the quarks that provide a three-dimensional map of the nuclear medium. This knowledgeprovides the basis of our understanding of nuclear matterin terms of the dynamics of their internal constituents. Our group at Duquesne is investigatingthe contribution of strange quarkto the nucleon. For that a RingImaging Cherenkov detector (RICH)was built and we present herea summary to our contributionto the project.
A full RICH detector is installed and functional. Asecond RICH detector is under construction and willbe built during the next couple of years. We expectour knowledge of the quarks distribution to bemuch improved than the existing data fromGermany.
