How many people have
dyslexia?
1 in every 10 people has dyslexia
It often runs in families
Dyslexia can be...
Finding it hard to read because you can’t
match sounds to the letters in words. . .
. . . and you may lose the
place a lot when you try
to concentrate
. . . and you may forget
what you have just read
so nothing makes any sense
And don’t even mention reading out loud!
Dyslexia can be...
Finding it hard to learn how to spell
words and write them down.
Dyslexia can be...
Finding it hard to remember things like:
• instructions or directions
• what you need to take to school each
day

Some people with visual stress find that
coloured glasses, overlays and coloured
paper help
How coloured overlays help
No overlay Overlay/ coloured glasses14
Dyslexia has nothing to do
with intelligence. Some of
the most successful and
smartest people in the world are dyslexic
People with dyslexia have strengths
as well as challenges
Being dyslexic is just a learning style
Dyslexia shouldn’t be a barrier to
success15
People with dyslexia can be...
Good at having new ideas
People with dyslexia can be...
Brilliant at solving problems

Important!
• Everyone with dyslexia is different
• Not everyone has the same problems
• Everyone with dyslexia is good at some things
• Different things help different people
Things I find tricky• Reading
• Timed activities
• Copying
• Spelling & writing
• Maths
• Remembering instructions
• Thinking on the spot
• Homework
What can help?
Reading
• I can read well now – I am not a fast reader
but …. so what …. I never read out loud in
class
• Text to speech technology
• Digital exams
• Audio books
• Consider spacing, font size, coloured
background and type
What can help?
Time
• I get extra time to finish my work and my
exams
• Time to prepare
• Time to review topic vocabulary before
topic starts
What can help?
Copying
• I don’t copy as I take a picture with my
phone or iPad
• If there is no device, ask your teacher to give
you print outs
What can help?
Spelling & writing
• I use my iPad for all my work in school and it
spell checks so I don’t have to spell
• I up level my writing using my iPad so I don’t
have to rub out and restart
• ‘Have a Go’ writing
• Don’t worry about neatness
• Sentence starter and Mindmap
31
What can help?
Maths
• Calculator
• Number and multiplication squares
• Memory Jogger book
• Additional formulae
What can help?
Remembering instructions
• I break them down into small chunks, take a
photo or get a print out
• Helpful if the teacher puts instructions on the
board
• This is also important in PE
What can help?
Thinking on the spot
• My teachers never ask me a question unless I
put my hand up
• I am given time to think of the answer
What can help?
Homework
• My Mum used to scribe
• Dictation
• Speech to Text
• Audio books
• Present homework in different forms
• Mindmaps
• Print, photo or email homework
What can help?
What helps most is
when teachers
understand
dyslexia!
What can help?
A Teacher should never say...
• Listen more carefully
• Read it more carefully…the answer is in the
passage
• Hurry up
• You need to be more careful
• Even a dyslexic child won the Burns competition
• You are a learning curve for me
What can help?
A Teacher should never say...
• You can be a challenge to teach
• Pay attention
• The answer is right in front of you
• There is a reward for being first finished
• You have not written much
• Come in at break and finish your work
• You just need to try a wee bit harder
• Dyslexia is only a visual problem
What can help? What a Teacher can do to help…
• Patience
• Use various teaching methods
• Listening
• Work alongside parents
• Preparation time
• Boost confidence
• Capture and praise strengths
What can help? What a Teacher can do to help…
• Sit pupil with children of same academic ability
• Sit with a supportive peer
• Allow work to be presented in various ways
• Classroom organisation
• Remember all behaviour is communication
• Ask the child what works for them
Children with
Dyslexia can feel
like this if people
don’t understand
Dyslexia
But….Children
with Dyslexia
ALWAYS feel like
this if people
understand
Dyslexia
