Dyslexia Dyslexia is a brain-based type of learning disability that specifically impairs a persons ability to read. These individuals typically read at levels significantly lower than expected despite having normal intelligence. Common characteristics among people with dyslexia are difficulty with spelling or rapid visual-verbal responding. (The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and stroke) 6. Symptoms of Dyslexia Slowor inaccurate reading. Poor spelling Auditory processing disorder. Difficulty with organization skills. Tendencies to omit or add letters or wordswhen writing and reading. 7. Legal Implications 1944 Education Act the testing was started to designate different groups. 1978 Warnock Report recommended that children with special education needs should be integrated into mainstream schools, whenever possible. 1981 Education Act speak about children with special education needs but not legally make it compulsory for education institutions to provide resources for such children. 8. Legal Implications Contd. 1995 Disability Discrimination Act this act promoted civil rights for the disabled people. 2005 Disability Discrimination Act completedthe implementation of the Disability Rights Task forcerecommendations, the introduction of a duty on publicauthorities to promote equality for disabled people. 1996 Tomlinson Report a milestone in providing anew approach to learning. This report introduced theinclusive learning in education which means teachers focusnot on the disability itself but on what it means for the waypeople learn or are helped to learn more effectively. 9. Legal Implications Contd. 2001Special Education Needs and Disability Act amended DDA 1995 to make it unlawful to discriminate against disable people in provision of education. 2003 Green Paper Every Child Matters included specific implications for children with special needs and disability. 2010 Equality Act ensures consistency in what need to be done to make any workplace a fair environment for everyone and to comply with the law. 10. A one to one chat with the student2. Refer him to the Inclusion learning Team so they can assess him and let you know the best way to help that individual student more effectively 13.
