COLORADO RAPIDS The Colorado Rapids put an end to their winless streak after four games, defeating Chivas USA 2-0 on Saturday evening at The Home Depot Center. The Rapids are in seventh place in the Western Conference with 34 points from 33 games. LAST MATCH

The Rapids took the lead in the 16th minute. From out on the left from a cleared service, Tyson Wahl whipped a cross into the middle of the box and Jaime Castrilln flicked a header to Martin Rivero, who was completely unmarked on the right side of the goal. He settled the ball and ripped a shot past a helpless Tim Melia in the Chivas goal.

Colorado doubled the lead in the 40th minute when Omar Cummings found Kamani Hill unmarked on the left side of the area. Hill snapped a header that got past Melia and into the back of the net.

Rapids head coach Oscar Pareja made four changes to the side that fell 4-1 to the San Jose Earthquakes at Dicks Sporting Goods Park. Steward Ceus came into the goal for Matt Pickens, Tyson Wahl started at left back in place of Luis Zapata, Jaime Castrillon entered the midfield for Brian Mullan, and Kamani Hill started up top in place of Andre Akpan.

COLORADO RAPIDS (4-4-2): Steward Ceus - Hunter Freeman, Marvell Wynne, Drew Moor, Tyson Wahl - Martin Rivero, Jeff Larentowicz, Hendry Thomas, Jaime Castrillon (Jamie Smith 72) - Omar Cummings (Joseph Nane 86), Kamani Hill (Tony Cascio 66)

TEAM NEWS The Rapids won for the first time since Sept. 5, and will now be looking to put together back-to-back victories

for the first time this season since winning their opening two matches of the campaign. We have a bunch of professionals here that face every game with the same attitude despite the position.

Were not in the running for the playoffs but today they played like if it was one of those games, said Rapids head coach Oscar Pareja. I give credit to a group that is professional and came in and fought, but put a lot of good ideas and played good soccer on the field.

Kamani Hill made just his second start of the season, his first since April 21, and just his third appearance since mid-August. He scored his fourth goal, his first since April 28.

As a player, every game you play to win, and every game you play to do your best, because you are being seen, you never know who is watching the game, said Hill. Every game is important individually. We came out and did our thing and I thought we gelled as a team, which is most important.

Said Pareja: Thats one of those cases where it comes down to decisions on selecting the players for different matches and he understands as well that the consistency hasnt been there. But Kamani brings things. As a player, he has been in our plans.

Making his first MLS start in his fourth season for the club goalkeeper Steward Ceus recorded the shutout. He has been very patient waiting for this moment, the game rewarded him. It wasnt just his first MLS start, but

he won it and no goals conceded. A lot of positive things not just for the group, but for Stew, said Pareja. Said Ceus: Getting my first game as a start and coming in with a clean sheet is definitely huge. Its a big boost in confidence to come out with a clean sheet and win .

Tyson Wahl also returned to the starting lineup, making his first since Aug. 31, and his fourth start for the club since being acquired from the Montral Impact.

Martn Rivero returned to the scoresheet for the first time since May 6, netting his second goal of the season. Playoffs arent in sight but we have a lot to play for and were continuing to play hard and show what we have

for the next game and for the year to come, said Ceus. Going into the season finale, I know its Fan Appreciation Day so were going to go out there and play our hearts out for the fans that have been coming out and supporting us.

HOUSTON DYNAMO The Houston Dynamo concluded their regular season home campaign unbeaten, getting two late goals for a 3-1 win against Philadelphia Union on Saturday evening at BBVA Compass Stadium. The Dynamo are in fifth place in the Eastern Conference with 53 points from 33 games. LAST MATCH

The Dynamo took the lead after just five minutes. After stripping Carlos Valds of the ball, leaving the Union defender standing in pain, Macoumba Kandji raced in on goal and beat Philadelphia goalkeeper Zac MacMath with a calm, placed finish.

But Union pulled level in the 19th minute. Sheanon Williams capped an overlapping run with an early ball that found forward Jack McInerney slipping between the Dynamo defense to head home from the heart of the area.

Houston was back in front in the 71st minute. Brian Ching led the counter and picked out Boniek Garca on his left. After cutting in on his favored right foot, Garca hit a curling shot to the near post that MacMath could only deflect into the roof of the net for the eventual game-winner.

Four minutes later the game was sealed after Will Bruin was taken down by Valds in the box, and Brad Davis stepped up to slot home the resulting penalty to MacMaths right.

Dynamo head coach Dominic Kinnear made one change to the team that reached a 1-1 draw with the Montral Impact at BBVA Compass Stadium. Brad Davis came back into the side in place of Calen Carr.

HOUSTON DYNAMO (4-4-2): Tally Hall - Kofi Sarkodie, Jermaine Taylor, Bobby Boswell, Corey Ashe - Boniek Garcia, Ricardo Clark, Adam Moffat (Giles Barnes 56), Brad Davis (Warren Creavalle 85) - Will Bruin, Macoumba Kandji (Brian Ching 67).

TEAM NEWS With the draw, the Dynamo secured their berth in the MLS Cup Playoffs, a sixth postseason trip in seven

seasons in Houston. I go back to my first year in San Jose, being coached by Dominic [Kinnear] was a complete change for me,

said midfielder Brad Davis. He has instilled a winning attitude and he holds us to a higher standard. There is not a day that he doesnt come out and push us to the extreme and expect a lot out of us. In turn, we expect a lot out of each other.

The Dynamo also became the fourth team in MLS history to go undefeated at home over an entire season, joining San Jose (2005), Real Salt Lake (2010) and LA Galaxy (2011).

We are a team that is a never-say-die team and we kept going and were excited. Undefeated at home this year is a great accomplishment and most of all we are in the playoffs, which is huge, said Davis. We have

been talking all week about it being in our hands and what to do. We needed to come out, step up and win and thats what we did. Im extremely happy for the guys and happy to be in another set of playoffs.

The Dynamo also extended their overall home unbeaten streak to 25 games in league play, now the second-longest in MLS history. Real Salt Lakes 29-game streak from 2009-11 is the league record.

Its a team achievement, 100 percent, said Dynamo head coach Dominic Kinnear. These guys are the ones that play, and play hard. Im lucky and appreciative of all their efforts. I have a very nice job and I also have the best seat in the house watching these guys play.

With Davis back in the team after he missed the Montral match with a calf strain, Kinnear returned to a 4-4-2 scheme.

Personnel is probably the most important thing for me, Kinnear said. The most important thing is to try and keep it simple and basic for the players. I like the 4-4-2. I like having two forwards who are making menacing runs down the wings and into the box, but sometimes it does change.

On Tuesday, the Dynamo secured their berth in the knockout phase of the 2012/13 CONCACAF Champions League with a 1-1 draw against CD Olimpia of Honduras as BBVA Compass Stadium. Andr Hainault equalizer in the 65th minute was all the Dynamo needed to move into the final eight next year.

Heres the Dynamo team: Tyler Deric; Warren Creavalle, Nathan Sturgis, Andre Hainault, Corey Ashe; Calen Carr (Macoumba Kandji 85), Luiz Camargo, Giles Barnes (Boniek Garcia 78), Colin Clark (Je-Vaughn Watson 46); Cam Weaver, Brian Ching

  • COLORADO RAPIDS vs. HOUSTON DYNAMO

On Saturday, the Colorado Rapids play the Houston Dynamo at 7 p.m.

MT at Dicks Sporting Goods Park in their final match of the 2012 season.

The Rapids are 5-7-4 all-time against the Dynamo, and 4-3-2 when at

home. Colorado are 10-19-4 on the season, and fresh off of a 2-0 road

victory against Chivas USA, led by goals from Martn Rivero and Kamani

    Hill.

The Dynamo are 14-8-11 and currently fifth in the Eastern Conference.

Theyve already clinched a playoff spot, but a win against the Rapids

could improve their seeding in the playoffs.

The Rapids have been plagued by late-season injuries and although the

Rapids are out of the playoffs, young players, such as forwards Hill, An-

dre Akpan, Tony Cascio, and defenders Davy Armstrong and Chris Klute,

could have the opportunity to prove themselves to the coaching staff

    before the season ends.

Rapids give Jerseys off our Backs on Fan Appreciation Night

On Saturday night, the Colorado Rapids present fans with the Jerseys

off our Backs, as part of Fan Appreciation Night, where lucky fans will

win authentic and match-worn jerseys from Rapids players in a special

post-game ceremony. All players on the roster will present the lucky fans

with their shirtswith those playing in the match presenting their game-

worn jerseyscomplete with an autograph. Rapids staff will visit random-

ly selected seats in the first half to find the participants who will win the

    jerseys after the match.

Rapids to present 2012 team awards after Houston match

The Colorado Rapids will present the 2012 team awards in a special post

-game ceremony following the match against the Houston Dynamo on

Saturday night. There are a total of six honors available for players to win.

Three of the awards (Most Valuable Player, Defensive Player of the Year,

and Young Player of the Year) are determined by a vote of Rapids play-

ers and assistant coaches, while the Golden Boot will go to the leading

scorer. The Humanitarian of the Year is chosen by Rapids Community

Relations and Kroenke Sports Charities, and an online vote will determine

    the Fan Favorite Award.

    Houston Connections

Brian Mullan was acquired by the Rapids on September 15, 2010

from the Houston Dynamo (along with a 2013 MLS SuperDraft

pick) in exchange for Colin Clark and allocation money. Clark

played with the Rapids from 2006 to 2010, while Mullan was key to

Houstons midfield line-up for back-to-back MLS Cup Championships

    (2006 and 2007).

Houston Dynamo head coach Dominic Kinnear played with the

Rapids in 1996 as part of the inaugural team and played in the first

ever Rapids match vs. Kansas City.

Rapids defender Hunter Freeman was signed by the Rapids in January

2012, having spent the 2011 season with Houston. He played in 23

matches, starting 22, and added five assists for the Dynamo.

Houston forward Macoumba Kandji played for the Rapids from 2010 to

2011. Kandji was acquired midway through the 2010 season and made

the play that led to the MLS Cup winning goal, tearing his ACL in the

process. He returned to the pitch in 2011, playing nine games for a total

of 16 for the Rapids before being traded to the Dynamo during the offsea-

    son.

Rapids keeper Ceus earns shutout in first MLS start

Rapids goalkeeper Steward Ceus of West Haverstraw, NY, earned a

shutout in his first career MLS start in the 2-0 victory over Chivas USA on

Saturday night. The 66 goalkeeper made two saves on the night to keep

the clean sheet, fighting off Chivas USAs 14 attempts on goal. Ceus

made his MLS debut on October 6 against San Jose, coming in for an

injured Matt Pickens, and is expected to start for the Rapids again on

    Saturday against Houston Dynamo.

Rivero and Hill lead Rapids over Chivas USA 2-0

The Colorado Rapids downed Chivas USA 2-0 on Saturday, Oct. 20 at

The Home Depot Center in the Rapids final road match of the season

thanks to first-half goals from Martn Rivero and Kamani Hill. Rivero

scored his second goal of the season in the 16th minute, collecting a

Jaime Castrilln flick off a Tyson Wahl cross before finishing from a tight

angle. Hill finished his fourth of the 2012 campaign, his first season in

MLS, just before halftime, perfectly placing a header off a great cross

    from Omar Cummings.

Brian Mullan undergoes successful knee surgery

Rapids midfielder Brian Mullan underwent successful surgery on his knee

on Thursday, Oct. 18 and will miss the teams final match of the season.

The procedure, a scope of Mullans left knee, will cause the Aurora native

to be out approximately 4-6 weeks while recovering. Mullan appeared in

28 regular season matches for the Rapids in 2012, starting 25, and scor-

ing two goals and adding seven assists (second on the team behind

    Rivero).

Moor and Larentowicz play 200th MLS games

This season, both defender and captain Drew Moor and midfielder Jeff

Larentowicz played their 200th regular season MLS match. Moor and

Larentowicz began their careers in 2005, Moor with FC Dallas (then the

Dallas Burn) and Larentowicz with the New England Revolution. Since

joining the Rapids in 2009, Moor has played the full 90 minutes in all 101

matches hes played for Colorado. He reached the 200 match mark on

April 21 at home against Los Angeles. From 2010 to present, Larentowicz

200th game on August 31 at Portland. Both players also played every

minute of the playoffs run that led to the clubs 2010 MLS Cup Champion-

    ship.

Matt Pickens closes memorable 2012 season

Rapids goalkeeper Matt Pickens will miss the final match of the season

after suffering a groin injury on Oct. 6, ending one of his best seasons of

his career. Pickens streak of 75 consecutive regular season starts was

the longest active streak in Major League Soccer, according to the Elias

Sports Bureau, and is also the longest consecutive games-played streak

    in Rapids history.

Despite missing the Chivas match on Oct. 20 and this weekends game,

he is currently third in the league in saves with 107. He earned his first

Save of the Week honor for the 2012 season for his efforts in the August

31 match at the Portland Timbers. The save, a reaction stop on a deflect-

ed shot, was voted by fans as the best save in all the weeks MLS games,

but was just one of a pair of stunning blocks the keeper made in the

    match.

Earlier this season, Pickens set the club mark for career shutouts, pass-

ing Marcus Hahnemann for wins in the Colorado record book on August

    4. In the 1-0 Subaru Rocky Mountain Cup victory over Real Salt Lake,

Pickens earned his 40th career win in a Rapids uniform. The goalkeeper

has been stellar all season for the Rapids, and is currently tied with Andy

Gruenebaum of Columbus Crew for the lead in saves with 83. On July 7,

Pickens became the 13th player in franchise history to play 100 matches

    for the club.

    Injury Update

Forward Conor Casey is listed as probable with knee soreness that has

been bothering him since Sept. 23. Matt Pickens and Brian Mullan have

been listed as out due to a groin and knee surgery (respectively).

Rapids forward Edu is listed as out after suffering a right foot contusion in

the match against Real Salt Lake on July 21.

Colorado Rapids captain Pablo Mastroeni will be out indefinitely as he

recovers from a head injury suffered early this season. Defender Anthony

Wallace, who was recovering from a knee injury suffered in August of

2011, was set back another 6-9 months after tearing his Achilles during

    training on Sunday, March 4.

    All-Time Games Played

The Colorado Rapids have three players in the top 20 list for all-time MLS

regular season games played. Defender Tyrone Marshall is 4th with 337,

captain Pablo Mastroeni sits at 8th with 318, and Brian Mullan has played

306 games, tied for 13th on the list with Cobi Jones. Marshall and

Mastroeni are the only active players in the top 10 list.
