8Since FlexPro supports almost any binary fileformat you are likely to come across, you canimport data from a huge range of measurementinstruments and software packages . The latterinclude any ODBC compliant database, mostpopular data acquisition programs includingLabVIEW, DASYLab, DaqView and Agilent VEE, anda wealth of other applications including SPSS,SYSTAT and MATLAB.

When you want to import data from any otherprogram that generates plain ASCII text, FlexPro’stext data import wizard automatically analyzesASCII files to provide you with the most efficientway to import the data. You can even assignspecific settings to a file extension (for example.dat) so that all future imports of similar files areautomated.

FlexPro also offers a variety of export options,including various text, vector and bitmap formats.You can also use OLE to copy FlexPro objects toother applications. Alternatively, you can exportcomplete analyses to HTML format and publishthem on the Internet or to your intranet.

Special LabVIEW, DASYLab and Agilent VEEinterface modules make FlexPro your idealpartner. For instance, you can use the FlexPro VIlibrary for LabVIEW to transfer data directly toFlexPro databases and to carry out automatedanalyses.

An important intermediate step when analyzingtime series is event isolation. FlexPro lets youmark events interactively or automatically detectthem using cursors . The Event Isolation analysis object is designed to help you findbursts, level crossings, slopes or maxima indifferent signals. You can logically link multipleevents or search for sequences of differentevents.

FlexPro’s non-linear curve and peak fittingroutines include more than 160 built-in modelsand support for FPScript based custom models . The integrated model ranking helps you choosethe right model. As well as harmonic analysis by means ofFourier transformation, counting procedureshave proved to be an important tool forexamining signals, in particular for load-time functions. Counting is based on asearch for specific events in the load-timefunction, e.g. a certain load level beingexceeded or a load alternation of a certainamplitude. For this purpose, the range ofvalues of the load-time function is dividedinto discrete intervals, or classes. Each eventfound is assigned to a class and counted inthis class.

FlexPro’s Counting Procedures optionprovides you with a broad spectrum ofcounting procedures. It includes countingprocedures according to the DIN 45667standard and the more modern Rainflowcounting method. The DIN 45667 standarddates from 1969 and is oriented towardsthe technical counting devices that wereavailable at that time. The Rainflowprocedure has for the most part replacedthe single count procedures. Therefore onlythose single count procedures wereimplemented for which the Rainflowprocedure does not offer an equivalent. In addition, the Rainflow procedure betteraccounts for the requirements of theoperational reliability test. Here, theRainflow procedure provides better results.

Using this option you can carry out ordertracking for speed-dependent oscillations.During order tracking the oscillation signalsmeasured at a certain speed are subjectedto a Fourier transformation (FFT). Individualspectral lines are taken from the spectrumwhere the frequency corresponds to amultiple of the base frequency asdetermined by the speed.

The FlexPro Order Tracking option canprocess data in different data structures.You can either enter multiple individualsignals that are measured at specifiedrevolutions or one ramp-up signal and thesynchronously measured speed signal.FlexPro can analyze time and angle (phase)signals. The speed signal can also beinterpreted as an impulse signal.

The result of the order tracking is a 3D-dataset with the amplitude across the order andfrequency or speed, respectively. With theSplit Orders Analysis Object, you can dividethe result into several 2D-data sets, one foreach order. The new FlexPro Digital Filters option providesyou with the latest design techniques forsimple operation. The FlexPro Analysis Wizardmerges steps for filter design, filtering andpresentation into a simple sequential process.Using real-time 2D and 3D graphics, FlexProoffers you immediate visual feedback wheneverany change is made to the filter specification.

Enhanced IIR filtersIIR filters include internal feedback (recursive filters)and provide a high degree of steepness with ashort filter length. This makes it possible to designlow pass, high pass, bandpass and bandstopfilters. The Digital Filters option extends the basicset of Bessel, Butterworth and Chebyshev filters inFlexPro Standard/Professional to include InverseChebyshev (Chebyshev II) and Elliptic (Cauer) filtercharacteristics. The various filters are optimized forphase linearity, minimal ripple of the transitionfunction, or high slope steepness. You cancalculate the filter order by predefining the widthof the transition instead of the order. Thetransition function ripple can be adjusted for theChebyshev and Elliptic filters.

FIR filter designFIR filters avoid feedback and are therefore alwaysstable. FlexPro offers you two procedures forcalculating phase-linear filters with a minimumfilter length.

FIR filter design using thewindow methodThis method uses the Rectangular, Bartlett,Hamming Generalized Hamming, Hanning,Blackman, Kaiser and Chebyshev windowsfamiliar from spectral analysis. These windows areused to limit the filter’s impulse response to thedesired length. You can also use this method todesign low pass, high pass, band pass and bandstop filters. Use the Kaiser or Chebyshev windows

to specify the filter’s length, attenuation andtransition width more precisely. You only have toprovide two parameters, and the third parameteris calculated automatically.

FIR filter design using theequiripple methodThis is the most powerful design method for FIRfilters with constant ripple (equiripple). Inaddition to the standard low pass, high pass,band pass and band stop filters, you can use thismethod to design any type of multiband filter.You provide the frequency response in anadjustable number of bands with constant orlinear amplitude progression and transitionslocated in between. You can predefine theapproximation error or the maximum rippleseparately for each band. FlexPro then calculatesthe FIR filter with the minimum length based onyour specification. Alternatively, you can evenpredefine any continuous curve as the filter’samplitude response. You can save your filterspecifications as templates to reuse later.

Smoothing filtersThe Savitzky-Golay smoothing filter uses localregression instead of the common smoothingmean value calculation. Use this filter tosmooth signals whose peaks are to bepreserved as purely as possible.

LOESS and LOWESS filters are very popularsmoothing methods that use a locally weightedregression function. The weighting causes distantpoints to have less influence on a smoothedvalue than on a smoothed mean value.

The Loess filter uses a quadratic weightingfunction, and the Lowess filter uses a linearweighting function.

CFC filterCFC is short for Channel Frequency Class. Thisinvolves a 4-pole phaseless Butterworth filter. TheCFC filter is used for crash tests in particular. It isimplemented in accordance with ISO 6487.

I am working on a PhD dissertation concerning thedynamic properties of rock, with Professor WilliamHustruild of the University of Utah who has beenworking in this area since the 1970s.
