1 Important notes on Dymola

Installation on Windows

To translate models on Windows, you must also install a supported compiler. The compiler is not distributed with Dymola. Note that administrator privileges are required for installation. Three types of compilers are supported on Windows in Dymola 2017:

Microsoft Visual Studio C++

This is the recommended compiler for professional users. Note that free Microsoft compiler versions earlier than Microsoft Visual Studio Express 2008 are not supported (concerning full versions, some earlier versions are supported). Refer to section “Compilers” on page 85 for more information.

Intel

Dymola 2017 has limited support for the Intel Parallel Studio XE compiler. For more information about this compiler, see section “Intel compiler support” on page 55.

GCC

Dymola 2017 has limited support for the MinGW GCC compiler, 32-bit and 64-bit. For more information about GCC, see section “Compilers” on page 85; the section about GCC compilers.

Installation on Linux

To translate models, Linux relies on a GCC compiler, which is usually part of the Linux distribution. Refer to section “Supported Linux versions and compilers” on page 87 for more information.

3.2 Developing a model

3.2.1 New version of Modelica Standard Library Modelica Standard Library (MSL) version 3.2.2 is included in this Dymola 2017 distribution.

By default Dymola will start with MSL 3.2.2 if installing Dymola for the first time.

Note! If the new version MSL 3.2.2 should be used as default version when earlier versions of Dymola have been used previously, do the following: • Apply the command Edit > Options…, select the Versions tab, select Modelica

version 3.2.2 and tick Force upgrade of models to this version. • Save the above setting by selecting the tab Save Settings, tick Default Modelica

version, and click OK to save the new default version.

All libraries in the Dymola distribution support MSL 3.2.2.

3.2.2 Find Usage (semantic search) in packages A new context command Find Usage… is available for classes in the package browser:

The command opens the same dialog as for the command Search…, with some selections prefilled. An example of executing such a command is:

The Find usage (semantic search) option in the Details group in the menu above is the new option.

This also means that the new option is available from the general command File > Search… or from the context command Search… for classes in the package browser.

3.2.3 Find and Replace command improved

All occurrences of whole words indicated

When using any Find or Find and Replace command in a text editor, all searched occurrences of whole words are displayed when clicking Find Forward or Find Backward the first time. The occurrences are highlighted in orange, the hit in blue.

Note the difference between the Find command and the highlighting in orange; to avoid highlighting in orange of e.g. single characters, only whole words are highlighted in orange. As an example, the Time occurrence in startTime above the Find dialog in the figure above will be found by the Find command, but it will not be highlighted in orange since it is not a whole word.

The feature of highlighting all found whole word occurrences is activated by default. This corresponds to the setting Highlight all matches in the Modelica text editor group Appearance tab of the command Edit > Options…:

(Note that there is a setting with the same name in the Command Window group; see section “Find and Replace command improved” on page 53 for more information about that setting.)

To disable the feature, you can uncheck the setting, or set the corresponding flag Advanced.HighlightAllMatches = false;

Shortcuts

The key F3 is shortcut for the command Find Forward, the keys Shift+F3 is shortcut for the command Find Backward.

History available for Find and Replace

3.2.4 Search options added in connection/add connection dialog

Search options have been added in the connection dialog and the find connection dialog.

Looking at the connection dialog that appears when e.g. connecting buses, an example of search might be:

What is entered in the Highlight field is searched for in the pane to the right, and hits are highlighted. Nodes are expanded to show the found occurrences.

Looking at the dialog that appears when using the command Find Connection, there is also a possibility to use Causality:

3.2.5 Filtering of components in diagram improved The Diagram Filter (previously View Filter…) context command available in the diagram layer has been improved:

By default the diagram filter window is now docked to the lower left corner of the main window.

Filtering on component name

A new input field Component name is added in the Diagram Filter dialog. Typing in that field dynamically filters out components not matching this text.

Note that components filtered out by the categories will still be filtered out even if they match the component name being input.

Clicking the cross in the end of the field restores it to the default value of no component name entered.

Filtering of components not belonging to any domain

Now also components that do not belong to any domain can be filtered. This is done by unticking other if such components are present. The below is an example of doing this.

Filter Diagram available also when having a component or object selected

If you select a component or object, you can right-click and select Filter Diagram from the context menu. When doing this the default filtering is to filter out all but components of the same domain as the component/object you selected. An example:

3.2.6 Improved handling of enumeration types In Dymola 2017 enumeration types can be defined by the new command File > New > Type (enumeration)…

The command is also available from the New button.

To edit present enumeration types, you can, for example, right-click such a type in the Modelica Text editor and use the Enumeration context menu entry

New Element… opens a dialog to add a new element:

The new element will be the last one in the list.

To edit a present element, you can click or right-click it in the list given by the Enumeration command above. Doing this for “Small” gives:

Renaming an enumeration element will also update use of the element in other models.

Note that if you right-click an enumeration element in the Modelica text editor, you get a shortcut to that element in the context menu:

This also means that you can get the menu of the element directly by using Ctrl+Shift+N while pausing over the element.

To sort, delete, and add enumeration elements you can use the Edit Enumeration… command from the Enumeration context menu:

3.2.7 ModelicaPath handling improved

Option to also use enclosing package paths in addition to ModelicaPath

To make it easier to, for example, automatically find multiple libraries that are stored in the same directory, there is now an option to also use directories enclosing packages in addition to ModelicaPath.

This option is available as Directories enclosing packages are used: in the Version tab, reached by the command Edit > Options…

• After ModelicaPath (default) means that the enclosing directories are searched after searching the paths in ModelicaPath.

• Before ModelicaPath means that the enclosing directories are searched before searching the paths in ModelicaPath.

• Not at all means that only the paths in ModelicaPath are searched. This corresponds to the behavior in previous Dymola versions.

The option is also available as a flag Advanced.EnclosingDirectoryModelicaPath. The value of the flag can be 0 (“Not at all”), 1 (“Before”), or 2 (“After”). The default value is 2.

Note that the content of ModelicaPath is not changed; the option specifies additional locations to use.

Modelica Path dialog improved

In Dymola 2016 FD01 the command File > Modelica Path was introduced to handle the Modelica Path. The command is now improved; a dialog for sorting, deleting, editing, and adding paths now appears when giving the command:

Note that the default path dymola\Modelica\Library is not displayed.

3.2.8 Minor improvements

Syntax error in model indicated in model tab

If there is a syntactic error in a model, it is indicated by an error icon in the model tab. Also, if he model is active, the header text contains “Incomplete Edit”:

Note that errors that do not make the syntax incorrect will not be indicated this way.

Option to not automatically expand top level of loaded libraries

In previous versions of Dymola, the top level of a library loaded using the File > Libraries command was always expanded when loaded.

In Dymola 2017, this is an option activated by default, but it can deactivated by unclicking Automatically expand loaded libraries. This option is available by the command Edit > Options…, in the Appearance tab.

If the option is unticked, the library is loaded, but the top level is not expanded (like e.g. Modelica Standard Library when starting Dymola).

The setting corresponds to the flag Advanced.AutoExpandLoadedPackage=true;.

Change class for multiple selection

In Dymola 2017, the context command Change Class… is available also if multiple components have been selected, if they are of the same class.

Renaming components improved

When renaming components, now also corresponding strings displaying the component name %name and enable-attributes are renamed.

Value display in diagram layer by text improved

Strings in the diagram layer displaying values can now contain periods: %RecordName.Component, for example to display record component values. An example of such a text string could be %myRecord.a.

Improvement of matching and variable selections

You can now use %componentName% to specify the last part of %componentPath% in the parameter newName in the MatchVariable constructor. This makes it possible to, for example, list only the instance name when listing variables, without listing the full path to the instance.

If you use %componentPath% as the final part of the pattern, the ending period “.”, will automatically be removed.

Fit to Window improved

The command Fit to Window is improved; it now adapts the zooming to display the whole model in the window, independently if e.g. some parts of the model are located outside the coordinate system. In such cases Fit to Window will not correspond to 100 % zoom levels.

The command is now also available as a button in the View toolbar:

It is also available in Simulate mode, if the diagram layer is displayed:

Editing variables from the context menu in Modelica Text layer supported

In previous versions, variables could only be defined from the context menu in Modelica Text layer, but now you also can edit existing variables. The context command Variables now corresponds exactly to the command Edit > Variables.

Mathematical notation of Modelica Text improved

When you use mathematical notation in the Modelica Text layer, now also the declarations are rendered using mathematical notation.

As an example, Modelica.Mechanical.Rotational.Components.Inertia with mathematical notation:

Auto completion in the parameter dialog

Previously auto completion (code completion) was supported in the Modelica Text editor; now it is also supported in the parameter dialog. This includes auto-add of parenthesis for functions.

Improved formatting of Modelica text

A number of improvements have been made: • Description strings can be indented. • Class names can be indented. • Comments are kept outside the class in package.mo. • Multiple consecutive empty lines are preserved when saving. However, note that

empty lines created by e.g. removing variables via GUI are not preserved; they are seen as not intended by the user.

• Uses-annotations and within-statements are now not automatically added for top level mo files if not present when saving.

Improved check of Modelica text

The following improvements when checking Modelica text have been made: • Mistyped class names are reported. • When token is missing, the last line where the token was used is also reported – this

facilitates correcting the error. • Case-sensitive matching is used when checking; for example, if a class name myclass

cannot be found, but myClass is found, that is reported.

Support for Scientific Data Format when exporting from or importing to the matrix editor

Important! Presently there is no check what is displayed in the matrix editor, that is; you can, as an example, paste a 4x4 matrix into the parameter field of parameter of fixed size 3x3, the matrix editor shows only result 3x3 cells:

For such a situation, an error message will be displayed when trying to translate/simulate the model.

Option to disable drag and drop in the package browser

In Dymola 2016 FD01 drag and drop in the package browser was introduced. If you don´t want to use this feature, you can disable it by unticking Reorder using drag and drop. The setting is reached by the command Edit > Options…, the Appearance tab.

The feature is enabled by default. This default setting also corresponds to the flag Advanced.DragDropPackageBrowser = true;

References automatically updated when changing a component name using the parameter dialog

Changing a component name using the parameter dialog now automatically update references to it by default. Previously the user had to set the flag Advanced.ActivateSmartRename=2; now this is the default value of the flag.

Improved dialog for Organize Commands

The command Commands > Organize Commands now uses an improved dialog for sorting, deleting, editing, and adding commands:

Copying of text from HTML editors changed

When copying text from formatted documentation and the Info/Revisions editor, the text is now only copied as plain text.

Previously a splash screen appeared when opening Dymola. This splash screen is now removed; the corresponding information is available, as before, by Help > About Dymola.

3.3 Simulating a model

3.3.1 Selection of active simulation model In Dymola 2017 you can select a certain model that should always be used as active simulation model when giving certain commands (Simulate, Translate, etc.) in Simulation mode, even if you work with another model.

By default Dymola works as in previous versions, that is, the active simulation model is the current model in the currently selected model tab.

The new feature is that you can select yourself a certain model that should always be the active simulation model.

The active simulation model can be selected in two ways, from the package browser or from the context menu of the tab that contains the model.

To select a model as active simulation model from the package browser, you can use the command Simulation Model in the context menu of the model in the package browser:

The menu entry Simulation Model works in toggle mode; by default it is not set - the above figure shows MyModel selected as the active simulation model by the user.

If the selected model is not open, it will be opened in a new model tab (only an open model can be the active simulation model).

To select the active simulation model from the corresponding model tab in Modeling mode, right-click the tab and select Simulation Model:

The model name of an active simulation model set by the user is indicated in boldface in the model tab (as above).

If the model tab containing the active simulation model is closed, Dymola will work again in default mode; the model in the currently selected tab becomes active simulation model.

If a model in a model tab has been selected as active simulation model by the user, some operations are not allowed when this tab is selected: • In this tab, the context menu entry Open Class will open the selected class in a new

tab, not in the present tab. • Double-clicking a class in the package browser, or right-clicking and selecting Open

Class will open the selected class in a new tab, not in the present tab.

In Simulation mode, the simulation setup, reached by the command Simulation > Setup…, (the General tab) contains information about the active simulation model and the name of the corresponding result file:

If Euler has been selected as integration algorithm in the General tab in the simulation setup (reached by the command Simulation > Setup…) then the following settings from the Realtime tab will be now also be stored in the model if the General option of Store in Model is selected when the Store in Model command is performed: • Inline integration method • Runge Kutta order • Optimize code for step size

Storage of translation settings

A new option Translation – Model translation flags is available in Dymola 2017 when clicking Store in Model in the simulation setup (reached by the command Simulation > Setup…):

The option is by default not selected.

If this option is selected, the following settings from the Translation tab will be stored in the model, in a new annotation annotation(__Dymola_experimentFlags()): • Evaluate parameters to reduce models (improves simulation speed) • Generate listing of flat Modelica code in .mof file

3.3.3 Improved handling of simulation time unit in GUI In Dymola 2017 you can select the simulation time unit for start time, stop time, interval length, and fixed integrator step by clicking a Simulation time unit button after any of these values, and then select what time unit to use:

The time units are read from the file displayUnit.mos. The simulation time units are only display units, internally seconds are still used.

If a new simulation time unit is selected, this selection applies for all (start time, stop time, interval length, and fixed integrator step). The values are changed to match the new unit.

Note that changing the simulation time unit also changes the time unit used in the active plot, and are used also when new plots are created.

The simulation time unit can also be changed from the animation toolbar:

Note the difference between this simulation time unit selection and the time unit selection that can be made by the context menu inside a plot. The simulation time unit described above is a global time unit for the display of simulation times. The time unit that can be changed from the context menu of a plot is only for the active plot window.

3.3.4 SDF Editor The SDF Editor is a standalone application to create, view, and edit files in the Scientific Data Format.

The application is available under Windows start menu, or by opening the file Dymola 2017\bin\SDF_Editor.exe.

The Scientific Data Format (SDF) is an open file format to store multi-dimensional data with units and dimension scales (independent variables). It is based on [HDF5] (http://www.hdfgroup.org/HDF5) and available on a large number of platforms.

SDF stores information in “Datasets” which can be structured using “Groups”. Both datasets and groups can contain an arbitrary number of “Attributes” which are name-value pairs of strings that hold Meta information about the respective group or dataset.

A special type of dataset is the “Scale”: it must be one-dimensional and its values must be monotonically increasing. One scale can be attached to every dimension of a dataset.

SDF is typically used for two types of data: time series and parameters.

3.3.7 Plot window

Measurement cursor for plots

In Dymola 2017 a measurement cursor can be used for plots:

By default, the measurement cursor is located over the left y axis. You move it by either dragging the time tool in the animation toolbar (see image above) or, once it is visible, by dragging the cursor line itself.

The time is displayed in the animation toolbar; see image above.

To display the measurement cursor, click on the Measurement Cursor button; see the image above. You can also use the command Plot > Measurement Cursor.

By default the data box is docked to the measurement cursor; it moves with the cursor. You can undock it by dragging it. By double-clicking on an undocked tooltip, you dock it again.

The data box has by default a background color; you can click on an empty area inside it to get it transparent. Clicking toggles the visibility of the data box background.

If you have several diagrams in a plot window, the cursor line is displayed in each diagram, but the cursor data box can be changed individually when it comes to docking and background visibility:

If the plot is displaying signals in a running animation, and the measurement cursor is displayed, the measurement cursor will dynamically be updated to the current time of the animation. The measurement cursor is updated in all present plot windows.

Changing display time unit for plots

Note that the display time unit for the active plot is changed if the global simulation time unit is changed, see section “Improved handling of simulation time unit in GUI” on page 40. However, you can always apply a specific time unit for the plot by using the context menu in the plot (without anything selected) and then select Time Unit to change the display time unit for the plot.

Changing display time units for tables

Previously the display time unit could be changed only for plots by the context command Time Unit in the plot window. Now this can also be done in a table window, in the same way. The currently selected display can be seen in the tooltip for the time line (the first line in the table window).

See previous section about how the global simulation time unit influences the plots, the same is the case for the table windows.

Locking of plots and tables

To prevent changing plots by accident, for example by adding or deleting curves by clicking in the variable browser, a new context command Locked is added for plot windows and table windows. By default the locking is not applied (see previous figure).

When locking is applied, the plot window or table window cannot be changed from outside (by for example selecting/deselecting signals in the variable browser, or by resimulation).

Reordering of plot diagrams (subplots)

The order of diagrams (subplots) in a plot window can now be changed. Two new items have been added to the context menu for the plot diagram. Choose Move Up to move the active diagram up one step, and choose Move Down to move it one step down.

You can reorder by keys as well, using Ctrl+Up/Ctrl+Down to move the diagram up/down. You can also navigate using the arrow keys.

3.3.8 Animation window

Fit view available

A new context command has been added in the animation window: Reset and Fit View. This command works like the still present Reset View command, but after the reset also fits the animated objects into the animation window.

This feature can be used to find again objects that have disappeared outside the window while animating.

3.3.9 Scripting

Improved plot script features

Handling of result file names

In Dymola 2017, the result file names are by default not included in the createPlot command. This affect also saving plots by generating plot scripts using the command File > Generate Script…, ticking Plot setup.

However, the result file names can be included in the createPlot command (and the plot script generation) by ticking Include result filenames in the menu of the above command:

This is needed if you want to save a plot that contains curves from more than one result file.

The built-in function saveSettings now also has a new Boolean input parameter storePlotFilenames to reflect the above. The value is by default false.

More information saved when saving plot scripts

More information is now also saved in the plot saving script, for example, the number of result files to keep, and more information about legends.

Auto completion in the script editor and the command window

Previously auto completion was supported in the Modelica Text editor, but now it is also supported in the script editor and in the command window.

Help command for global flags

You can now use the help command also for global flags, for example entering the following in the command input line of the command window:

help Advanced.LogBusSignalSets

gives the output: Boolean Advanced.LogBusSignalSets = true "Log bus signal sets (contents of augmentation sets for expandable connectors)";

Note that the value of the flag is also presented.

The built-in function exportHTMLDirectory is improved

The built-in function exportHTMLDirectory has been improved:

• The function is now consistent with the command File > Export > HTML… > Online package documentation.

• If the output directory is missing, it is automatically created if possible; otherwise an error message appears.

• For packages, if no output directory is specified, it will by default be a directory “help” under the package directory.

3.3.10 Find and Replace command improved The improvements are the same as in Modeling mode, see page 11. This improves for example handling of the command log.

Note however that highlighting all matches of whole words are by default disabled for the command log, due to performance reasons if the command log is big. To enable this feature, you can tick the setting Highlight all matches in the menu reached by Edit > Options…, the Appearance tab, the Command Window group.

The setting is by default not ticked:

Git support

Dymola 2017 supports Git. Git can be selected as version management system by ticking Git in the Version tab reached by the command Edit > Options…:

Short guide to version management with the new features included

To sum up the improvements in version management, the following is a short guide to get started with version management in Dymola; in order to keep track of changes during development.

Note that you need the Model Management license option to use version handling systems in Dymola.

The guide assumes that you are already familiar with the basics of version management. Note that the terminology differs between different systems.

The steps are:

1. Figure out which version management you already are using – or going to use (in the latter case we do not recommend CVS). Select this in Edit > Options > Version. For Git you also have to provide the path to the bin-directory. In case you use an unsupported system or do not want to use the support in Dymola (or do not have the Model Management license option) go to step 3.

2. Now you need a local copy of a repository of changes. If you do not already have one:

a. In most cases there is an existing repository for changes stored on a server (or you create one first) – use File > Version > Git Clone/Svn Checkout to connect to it. The first line is the URL – for example https://github.com/HansOlsson/GitModelicaTest.git for git or https://svn.modelica.org/projects/Modelica/trunk for svn. The second line is only needed if you want to give the local copy a different name.

b. To experiment you can create a local repository – but you should move to a server later on. For svn follow the instructions in https://tortoisesvn.net/docs/nightly/TortoiseSVN_en/tsvn-qs-guide.html – and use a file-url. For git just use File > Version > Git Init.

c. If you are starting a new project: plan ahead – e.g. have a directory containing your library even if there is initially only one; and do not use the version number in the path (so name your directory ”MyLibrary” not “MyLibary 1.2.0” – and use a better name than “MyLibrary”).

3. We now recommend some important changes of settings in Edit > Options > Version: The first three options below can also be used without using a version management system in Dymola.

a. If you use version management for more than one related package they are normally versioned and stored together. A simple alternative is to just open one of them and rely on Edit > Options > Directories enclosing packages are used: “Before ModelicaPath”. The default “After ModelicaPath” also works, except if you are developing a library already present in Dymola (such as Modelica Standard Library). Another alternative would be to add the directory containing those libraries to ModelicaPath using File > Modelica Path; and store the setting using Edit > Options > Save Settings > Modelica Path; the benefit is that you can add entries in File > Libraries.

b. Dymola normally creates backup files for deleted mo-files. With a version management system that is not needed, so: enable Edit > Options > Version > Delete …

c. For version management it is usually preferable to have a finer granularity so that each model is stored in its own file. Disable Edit > Options > As default store packages as one file. (Note: Some classes cannot be stored in a separate file, and this only controls the default for each package you create later on.)

d. For version management you want to keep track of files being added, moved, and deleted automatically. Enable Edit > Options > Version > Automatically… This applies both to model-files and images added for equations in the documentation layer. Note: This option does not work for CVS, and must be enabled already when you add/rename/delete the class and is executed when you save your library. This also changes save to always saving entire libraries, not just individual files. If you rename a package (stored as directory) – please save before renaming any classes inside it. You can also add files manually using File > Version > Add file.

4. You can either use Dymola’s commands in File > Version or an external tool for seeing your changes.

3.6 Other Simulation Environments

3.6.1 Dymola – Matlab interface

Compatibility

The Dymola – Simulink interface now supports Matlab releases from R2011a (ver. 7.12) up to R2015b (ver. 8.6). Only Visual Studio C++ compilers are supported to generate the DymolaBlock S-function. The LCC compiler is not supported.

3.6.2 Real-time simulation

New and improved dSPACE build commands

The dym_rti_build command has been improved to allow overwriting of existing _usr.trc files. It is also possible to specify file names for the generated _usr.trc files.

A new command dym_rtimp_build is introduced, which combines the dSPACE rtimp_build command and dym_rti_build to build dSPACE multi-processor systems for models containing DymolaBlocks.

The selection of supported dSPACE releases focuses on releases that introduce support for a new Matlab release and dSPACE releases that introduce a new version of a cross-compiler tool. In addition, Dymola always support the three latest dSPACE releases with the three latest Matlab releases. Although not officially supported, it is likely that other combinations should work as well.

Compatibility – Simulink Real-Time (formerly xPC Target)

Compatibility with Simulink Real-Time has been verified for all Matlab releases that are supported by the Dymola – Simulink interface, which means R2011a (xPC Target ver. 5.0) to R2015b (Simulink Real-Time ver. 6.3). Only Microsoft Visual C compilers have been tested.

3.6.3 Python Interface for Dymola The Python interface for Dymola was previously only supported on Windows; it is now also supported on Linux. The instructions for Windows in the manual apply to Linux as well, with adjustment for the Linux structure. For example: • The Dymola binary is supposed to be located as /usr/local/bin/dymola if the

path is omitted when using the interface. • The PYTHONPATH should for the 64-bit version of this release be set according to:

3.6.4 FMI Support in Dymola Unless otherwise stated, features are available both for FMI version 1.0 and version 2.0.

Structured declaration of variables default when importing an FMU

In Dymola 2017 the option Structured declaration of variables is by default true when importing an FMU. This option is available in the FMI tab of the simulation setup, reached by the command Simulation > Setup… (see next image for an image of the tab).

New flag to control the translation of underscore when importing an FMU

The default in Dymola 2017 is to translate underscore “_” without any changes when importing an FMU. If you want underscore “_” to be translated to “_0” when you import an FMU, you can set the flag

Advanced.FMI.UseTrueVariableNames = false;

Previously the default was to always translate underscore “_” to “_0”, because of possible conflicting names (the period “.” in Modelica paths is always translated to underscore when importing an FMU). Now, when structured variables are used by default when importing an FMU (see previous section), the likeliness for conflicting names are very small, hence the changed default behavior, and the flag to revert to the old behavior.

Note! If you have a model that contains an FMU as a connected component, you might get errors if you want to reimport that FMU to the model, due to the changed translation of underscore. You need in such a case to either redo your connections or set the above flag to false to have the old naming convention when reimporting the FMU.

Support for Dymola solvers when using FMU Co-simulation on Linux

Previously only the CVODE solver was supported for FMU Co-simulation on Linux; now also the Dymola solvers are supported.

Filtering the model description file when exporting an FMU

New settings for filtering of the modelDescription.xml file are available in the simulation setup for FMI, reached by the command Simulation > Setup…, the FMI tab:

• Protected variables (by default activated) filters away protected Modelica variables. This setting corresponds to the flag Advanced.FMI.xmlIgnoreProtected = true;.

• Auxiliary variables (by default not activated) works differently in FMI version 2.0 and FMI version 1.0:

o For FMI version 2.0 activating this setting mean filtering away all variables of causality local, except states and derivatives of states.

This setting corresponds to the flag Advanced.FMI.BlackBoxModelDescription = false;.

Note that if you activate Black-box, the settings Protected variables and Auxiliary variables are dimmed; they are not relevant in this case.

New tab in the parameter dialog for initialization of values

For FMI Model Exchange in FMI version 2.0, input start values can be set for an FMU before initialization. This should however only be necessary if your FMU is constructed in such a way that the default start value for an input is illegal in the FMU, e.g. division with an input variable having a default value of zero. For such an input variable you can set the input start value to some value not being zero; sources of the FMU will then be handled properly in the initializationMode.

Such start values are now collected in a new tab, Input Start Values, in the parameter dialog of the FMU:

For FMUs of FMI version 1.0, you should avoid a design where input values affect initialization, since the FMI 1.0 interface lacks proper support to iterate during initialization.

Propagating annotations from Modelica variables to the FMI model description

Dymola 2017 supports propagating annotations from Modelica variables to the fmi2Annotation node “Annotations” in the corresponding scalar variables in an FMI 2.0 modelDescription.xml document.

To activate this feature, set the flag Advanced.FMI2.OutputVariableAnnotationsInXML = true;

The flag is by default false.

FMI Kit for Simulink

The Dassault Systèmes tools for export and import of FMUs in Simulink have been merged and are now released together as FMI Kit for Simulink version 2.2.0. It resides in the following folder of the Dymola 2017 distribution

Note that the Modelica Standard Library is compliant with the Modelica Language Specification 3.3, Revision 1, which is the most up-to-date definition at the time of this Dymola release. (So this version of the Modelica Language Specification should be used for reference, and not the Modelica Language Specification 3.2, Revision 2.)

A number of improvements have been made, for example: • The implementations of the Chen correlation and the Kandlikar correlation for

refrigerant evaporation in heat exchangers have been improved. Heat exchanger results may be affected, especially if heat transfer is limited by the refrigerant side. User models built with previous versions are converted to the original correlation to retain possibly calibrated behavior.

• Splits and joins have been completed with an additional choice of flow resistance parameterization through nominal operating points and summary records.

• Air mass flow rate in heat exchangers summary corresponds to inlet variable instead of outlet, which only is a difference in case of moisture condensation.

• The heat transfer correlation packages have been reorganized to make their intended usage clearer.

• A number of new classes have been added, o HTOnePhaseMedium.HTPlateChevronChisholm, a new heat

transfer correlation for one-phase fluids (coolant) in Chevron-type plate heat exchangers

o HTOnePhaseMedium.KcUserDefinedSinglePhase, user defined correlation for liquid fluids

New cell aging models

Adding of a new model for calendar aging with a generalized approach for Lithium ion cells based on the behaviour of the solid electrolyte interface (SEI).

Extended parameter fitting algorithm

Addition of new parameter fitting functions in order to parameterize the new aging model for Lithium ion cells. The parameter fitting is necessary as the aging model is based on empirical modelling of the SEI behavior after cell formation and therefore requires model parameter calibration.

Usage of new data format for electric parameters

Introduction of electric cell models using the new class NDTable as a source block for parameter tables. This table class uses the Scientific Data Format (SDF, format: .sdf) for the storage of parameters tables, e.g. for the resistors and capacitors in the equivalent circuit network.

Improvements • The top-level package ParameterFitting consists now of two packages: Aging and

Electric. The hitherto existing calibration functions for the electric model have been moved to Electric package, while the new calibration function for the new calendar aging model are in the Aging package.

• When scaling the cell capacity, an option is now available for automatically adjusting internal resistance accordingly.

• Resolved problems in the cycling aging model: Fixed chattering occurrence in the cycle counter causing performance problems when using Newton or DASSL solvers with certain boundary conditions.

3.10.14 Human Comfort Library A new version 2.1.0 has been released.

The new version includes the addition of a CFD-based air model. Using view factors, an exact calculation of the thermal radiation between visible surfaces is supported. The new model uses the finite-volume method to subdivide the air volume, making it possible to reduce the number of required cells. The calculation is made on the basis of Navier Stokes equations, which achieves conservation of momentum. It allows simultaneous dynamic simulation of zones and air conditioning systems. With simultaneous simulation of air-conditioned zones (e.g. in buildings and vehicles) and the air conditioning system, it is possible to draw up an analysis of the interactions between the system and the comfort in the zone.

3.10.15 Hydraulics Library A new version 4.4 has been released.

New features • Hydraulic brake system and pneumatic brake booster example model demonstrating

FMI capabilities and multi-library capabilities. • Linear analysis tutorial on a common rail diesel injection system. • Possible to scale states for improved numerical accuracy. This is done from the outer

oil-component and includes pressure (all volumes), volume flow rate (for Lines) and wk (dynamic friction term in LongLine).

• Mass-components to Elements which are more flexible and an additional mass inside mass component.

• Oil model Constant and ConstantBulkModulus are now supported by thermal equations. This enables fast switching between thermal/non-thermal oil. A complete list of assumptions in every fluid property is available.

• Significantly improved ModelonFluid (previously called ThermoHydraulics) assumptions and parameterization. A tutorial is available in the ModelonFluid information section.

• New oil property models ConstantPure and ConstantBulkModulusPure are added to the library. These models are currently the most simple oil property models in the library for optimal simulation performance. The models use the same approach as the models Constant and ConstantBulkModulus but with no gas content.

Improvements • Changed oil model in HydraulicDamper to Constant oil property model and fixed

usage of multiport concept to avoid linear equation systems.

3.10.17 Liquid Cooling Library A new version 1.5 has been released.

layer. • A ball valve model with predictive geometry based pressure drop has been added. • Steady state initialization of systems is facilitated by a new top level parameter for

this. • Volumetric flow sensors have been added

Improvements • Pump flow curves can now be parameterized by pressure increase in combination with

a reference fluid density, in addition to the previously available head option. • It is now possible to specify the pump power consumption directly as a table. • In heat exchanger models based on tabulated efficiency, it is now possible to specify

the efficiency based on a single side instead of true efficiency, which is based on the maximum transferable heat.

• Transport delay effects have been added to orifice components with a length, i.e. the LongOrifice, Contraction and Expansion. By default this is enabled but existing user models are converted to disable the effect to not impact the result of existing models.

• It is now possible to disable the transport delay effect in discretized pipe models by a parameter.

• A robustness improvement in the pump lets the user specify a minimum efficiency. This could otherwise cause unrealistically high outlet temperatures when operating far outside the validity region for some parameterization options.

• A robustness improvement has been implemented in the liquid models. The specific heat capacity now extrapolates with constant value outside the validity region of the model. Extrapolation far outside the validity region could previously result in negative specific heat capacity, with unphysical results and simulation crashes as result.

3.10.18 Model Management Library A minor version 1.1.6 has been released.

3.10.19 Modelica Standard Library (MSL) A new minor version 3.2.2, is released.

By default Dymola will start with MSL 3.2.2 if installing Dymola for the first time.

Note! If the new version MSL 3.2.2 should be used as default version when earlier versions of Dymola have been used previously, do the following: • Apply the command Edit > Options…, select the Versions tab, select Modelica

version 3.2.2 and tick Force upgrade of models to this version. • Save the above setting by selecting the tab Save Settings, tick Default Modelica

version, and click OK to save the new default version.

All libraries in the Dymola distribution support MSL 3.2.2.

The improvements in MSL 3.2.2 include: • A number of added sublibraries for handling of, for example, the following:

Simplified buck converter models are added. The models are less detailed in their dynamics and their protection (overcurrent/undervoltage), but represent the same losses as more detailed models.

The electric drives can now optionally input a voltage forward. This allows much faster torque responses compared to control only on the current.

Conversion of user libraries

This library is backward compatible to Power Train library versions 2.x.y.

New features

New Independent Suspension Linkages

Two new independent suspension linkages: fourlink and trapezoidal have been introduced. Both suspension linkages have either steerable or non-steerable configurations, as well as kinematic and multiple compliant versions.

A fourlink suspension is effectively a double wishbone suspension with either the lower or upper wishbone split into two separate fore/aft links and a steer link. Each link has a separate attachment point to the upright.

A trapezoidal suspension has a lower wishbone with a link connected to the upright, a single upper link and a steer link.

Kinematics and Compliance (K&C) Experiments Using Wheel Test Rig

In version 2.1, a live tire suspension test rig was added that allows the application of external forces and torques at either the contact patch or wheel center/hub. Experiment templates and examples have been added to allow you to perform virtual K&C experiments using this live wheel rig. K&C experiments are now broken into two groups: HubRig and WheelRig depending on which suspension test rig is used.

Functional Mockup Interface Examples

Examples have been added to demonstrate how models can be both imported and exported as a Functional Mockup Unit (FMU) from VDL using the Functional Mockup Interface (FMI). The FMI allows for cross-platform deployment of models.

The exported FMUs can be used with prepared example models in Simulink, located in the VDL installation directory: VehicleDynamics/Resources/Simulink/FMI. Using these Simulink example models require the FMI Toolbox for MATLAB/Simulink.

The new examples can be found in Examples.FMI.

Improvements

Added Static Loadcases Suspension Experiment

The live tire suspension test rig has been modified to allow the wheel pads to be driven with a force input. Previously, it was only possible to drive the wheel pads with a displacement input. A new StaticLoads controller and an example StaticLoads experiment have been added that demonstrate this new functionality.

Dashboard Connector Changes

The dashboardInformation connector has been eliminated from the Vehicle and Driver standard interfaces to facilitate custom interfacing between drivers and vehicles. The signalBus now carries all generic signal information between the driver and the vehicle. The dashboardInformation connector is still available inside the signalBus as signalBus.dashboard. In order to make an external connection to the dashboardInformation connector, an instance of DashboardInformation has to be added and connected to

signalBus.dashboard. Ignition and Start commands for the engine are now only sent over the signalBus and not in the dashboard interface.

We suggest using the signalBus for sending custom signals between the driver and vehicle. The signalBus is available in the standard driver interface.

Automatic conversion of user libraries from version 2.2 is supported using the included script.

3.12 Appendix – Installation: Hardware and Software Requirements

Below the current hardware and software requirements for Dymola 2017 are listed.

3.12.1 Hardware requirements/recommendations

Hardware requirements • At least 1 GB RAM • At least 400 MB disc space

Hardware recommendations

At present, it is recommended to have a system with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor or better, with at least 2 MB of L2 cache. Memory speed and cache size are key parameters to achieve maximum simulation performance.

A dual processor will be enough if not using multi-core support; the simulation itself, by default, uses only one execution thread so there is no need for a “quad” processor. If using multi-core support, you might want to use more processors/cores.

Memory size may be significant for translating big models and plotting large result files, but the simulation itself does not require so much memory. Recommended memory size is 4 GB of RAM for 32-bit architecture and 6 GB of RAM for 64-bit architecture.

3.12.2 Software requirements

Microsoft Windows

Dymola versions on Windows and Windows operating systems versions

Dymola 2017 is supported, as 32- and 64-bit application, on Microsoft Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10. Since Dymola does not use any features supported only by specific editions of Windows (“Home”, “Professional”, “Enterprise” etc.), all such editions are supported if the main version is supported.

Compilers

Please note that for the Windows platform, a Microsoft C/C++ compiler, an Intel compiler, or a GCC compiler, must be installed separately. The following compilers are supported for Dymola 2017 on Windows:

Current limitations with 32-bit and 64-bit GCC: • Embedded servers (DDE or OPC servers) are not supported. • Commercial libraries: Only limited testing has been done. • Support for external library resources is implemented, but requires that the resources

support GCC, which is often not the case. • No support for run-time license. • For 32-bit simulation, parallelization is only supported with any of the Lsodar, Dassl,

Euler, Rkfix2, Rkfix3, or Rkfix4 algorithms.

Dymola license server

For a Dymola license server on Windows, all files needed to set up and run a Dymola license server on Windows, except the license file, are available in the Dymola distribution. (This includes also the license daemon, where Dymola presently supports FLEXnet Publisher version 11.11. This version is part of the Dymola distribution.)

Linux

Supported Linux versions and compilers

Dymola 2017 runs on SUSE Linux (Release 11), 32-bit and 64-bit, with gcc version 4.9.3, and compatible systems. Any later version of gcc is typically compatible. In addition to gcc, the model C code generated by Dymola can also be compiled by clang.

To change compiler, change the variable CC in /opt/dymola-<version>-<architecture>/insert/dsbuild.sh, where <architecture> is i586 for 32-bit application, and x86_64 for 64-bit application. As an example, for a 64-bit Dymola 2017 application:

/opt/dymola-2017-x86_64/insert/dsbuild.sh

Dymola 2017 is supported as a 32-bit and 64-bit application on Linux.

Notes • 32-bit compilation might require explicit installation of 32-bit libc. E.g. on Ubuntu:

sudo apt-get install g++-multilib libc6-dev-i386 • Dymola is built with Qt 5.5 and thereby inherits the system requirements from Qt.

However, several xcb helper libraries are bundled with Qt (in detail, QT was built with the flag –qt-xcb) in order to reduce the system dependencies as much as possible.

• For rendering of jpg files, libjpg62 must be installed.

Note on libraries • Please note that you have to use the Optimization library version 2.x or higher to use

multi-criteria design optimization on Linux; the older Design.Optimization package does not support multi-criteria design optimization on Linux.

• The library UserInteraction is not supported on Linux.
