  • GENESIS 40:9-23

9 Then the chief cupbearer told his dream to Joseph. Hesaid to him, “In my dream, there was a vine in front of me.10 On the vine were three branches. It had barely budded, when out came its blossoms and its clusters ripened intograpes. 11 Pharaoh’s cup was in my hand, and I took thegrapes, pressed them into Pharaoh’s cup, and placed the cupin Pharaoh’s hand.” 12 Joseph said to him, “This is itsinterpretation: The three branches are three days. 13 In threedays Pharaoh will *pardon you* and restore you to your post;you will place Pharaoh’s cup in his hand, as was your customformerly when you were his cupbearer. 14 But think of me whenall is well with you again, and do me the kindness ofmentioning me to Pharaoh, so as to free me from this place.15 For in truth, I was kidnapped from the land of the Hebrews;nor have I done anything here that they should have put me inthe dungeon.” 16 When the chief baker saw how favorably hehad interpreted, he said to Joseph, “In my dream, similarly, there were three *openwork baskets* on my head. 17 In theuppermost basket were all kinds of food for Pharaoh that abaker prepares; and the birds were eating it out of the basketabove my head.” 18 Joseph answered, “This is its interpretation:The three baskets are three days.

19 In three days Pharaoh will lift off your head and impaleyou upon a pole; and the birds will pick off your flesh.” 20 On thethird day—his birthday—Pharaoh made a banquet for all hisofficials, and he *singled out* his chief cupbearer and his chiefbaker from among his officials. 21 He restored the chiefcupbearer to his cupbearing, and he placed the cup inPharaoh’s hand; 22 but the chief baker he impaled—just asJoseph had interpreted to them. 23 Yet the chief cupbearer didnot think of Joseph; he forgot him.

  • ZECHARIAH 4:1-7

Zechariah was a prophet in the sixth century B.C.E. in the land of Israel, where theexiles had returned from Babylon. Work on the new Temple had begun and Zechariahurged the people to complete the task. Zechariah here describes an angel explaining tohim that Zerubbabel, the grandson of the exiled King of Judah, will succeed in rebuildingthe temple, because it is God’s will.

4:1The angel who had been talking with me came back and woke me as a sleeper iswoken. 2He said to me, “What do you see?” I answered, “I see a lampstand all ofgold, with a bowl on its top. There are seven lamps on it, and, on its top, there areseven pipes for the lamps. 3By it are two olive trees, one on the right of the bowl andone on its left.”

4I, in turn, asked the angel who had been talking with me, “What do those thingsmean, my lord?” 5And the angel who had been talking with me answered, saying,“Don’t you know what these things mean?” And I said, “No, my lord, I do not.” 6Thenhe explained it to me as follows:

“This is the word of the ETERNAL to Zerubbabel: Not by might, nor by power, butby My spirit—said the GOD of Hosts. 7What are you, you great mountain? BeforeZerubbabel, you shall become level ground! For he shall bring out the topmoststone and seeing it all shall cry: Beautiful! Beautiful!”
