The Sooner You Enroll in the SMART Program, the More Money You Can Save with Solar In a state known for its high-quality colleges and universities, perhaps it’s no accident that Massachusetts’ new solar incentive program is called the SMART program. As part of the SMART program, the state pays customers of its three major utilities - Eversource, National Grid and Until - a fixed rate per kilowatt hour (kWh) of solar energy produced for 10 years. 1 But…it’s important to enroll in SMART early! SMART program customers join the program in declining capacity blocks on a first-come-first-served basis. 2 The first capacity blocks offer the highest compensation rates for solar energy produced. SMART began accepting applications to the program in November 2018, and the initial phase of the program has seen a significant number of applications from both homeowners and businesses.
