readjust clevis/lower rod length with the springclip buttons so that the search coil can be held nearthe floor without requiring stooping over.

7. Remove the protective paper from the two blackelbow cup foam pads. Carefully align pads on theinside of the elbow cup, one on each side of thecenter rod, and press firmly into place.

8. Adjust the elbow cup strap so that it is looseenough for you to slide your arm in and out with-out loosening each time you want to set the detec-tor down. The elbow cup strap provides extraleverage and control. However, some prefer not touse it.

9. Install battery as described in the next section,decal facing down, with plastic tab and steel contactsfacing toward inside of battery compartment.

10. It should be noted at this point that the detectormay not work as expected indoors due to the highdegree of metals used in modern construction. It isbest to tune and practice out-of-doors to ensurestable, predictable results. Additionally, freshly-buried targets will not produce the normal depthand discrimination results of targets that have beennaturally lost and settled in the ground. Due to theabnormality caused by digging a hole in the groundmatrix, and the sophistication of the ground rejec-tion circuitry, it may take a number of years forfreshly-buried targets to respond at true depths anddiscrimination accuracy. The best way to deter-mine true detection depth is in real search condi-tions.

Assembly Instructions1. Remove all parts from shipping carton andcheck the assembly page to make sure all parts arepresent.

2. There are rubber washers between clevis/lowerrod and loop ears. Use only nonmetallic washers,fiber bolt, and thumbnut to secure loop/searchcoil to clevis/lower rod.

3. Unlock "S" rod camlock and insert clevis/lower rod into curved "S" rod so that stainlesssteel spring clip buttons line up and lock into oneof the adjustment holes in the curved "S" rod.Turn camlock to secure. The second or thirdadjustment holes are suitable for average sizeadults. Individuals 6' or taller should use the fullyextended position. Individuals well over 6' tallshould purchase the optional Tall Man Rod.

4. Unravel loop cable and wind the cable aroundthe clevis and rod assembly, first revolution overthe top of the rod. Wind cable all the way to thetop of the curved "S" rod, about five revolutions.Use the black cable retainers, one near the loop,and one near the top of the curved "S" rod, to holdthe loop cable in place.

5. Unlock control box rod camlock and insertcurved "S" rod so that stainless steel spring clipbuttons line up and lock into the rod on top of thecontrol box. The "S" rod is designed to curve uptoward the display. However, those who prefer tosweep the loop close to their feet may desire toassemble the "S" rod to curve down toward theground. Turn camlock to secure. Plug loop con-nector into control box, screw lock ring to secure.

6. Grip the instrument by the handle, with your arm inthe elbow cup with strap secure, and sweep the loop/search coil over the floor. If the instrument fit feelsuncomfortable, adjust the elbow cup by removingand repositioning the bolt/thumbnut and installingin one of the optional positions. If necessary,

Standard Battery Holder

1. The standard battery holder (blue decal) holdseight “AA” cell batteries. Alkalines are recom-mended for use with this battery holder.

2. Non-alkaline batteries can be used in this holder.When non-alkalines or rechargeable “AA”cells are used, detecting time (before replacement/recharge) may be reduced.

3. "LOW BAT" will automatically appear on thedisplay when the batteries become too low toproperly operate the detector.

4. The battery compartment opens by gentlypulling down on the front of each of the twolatches (on the bottom of the control box) releasingthe catch and hinging open the door.

The non-rechargeable battery holder can use manydifferent types of batteries, including rechargeable.This holder is designed for standard size penlight"AA" batteries which should be 50 mm ± .10mm.Battery lengths shorter than this will likely causeproblems with this power supply.

When the instrument is turned on the battery volt-age will momentarily appear after the openingdisplay. The detector will then continue to theMAIN MENU . To recheck the battery voltageduring operation, squeeze and hold the TRIGGERand press the ARROW DOWN control.

Rechargeable Battery

A rechargeable battery (green decal) is providedwith your instrument. This battery can be rechargedhundreds of times as long as the battery hasn't beenstored for extended periods of time or overcharged.Full charge can be achieved anytime during thedischarge cycle. When using the QUICK chargesetting use the Charging Hours chart on the follow-ing page for charge time. A full charge will last tento fifteen hours of normal use.

Battery life will vary with temperature, the numberof targets found, and the exact settings used. Sixhours is not unusual for extreme high performancesettings, backlight use, or for batteries that haveexperienced extensive use.

Your charger has a switch on it that selects theQUICK charge, or OVERNIGHT charge options.Always check the position of this switch prior tocharging. Always follow the charge hours on thechart on the following page when the QUICKcharge setting is used. Overcharging with theQUICK charge setting will damage the system.

Using theStandard Battery Holder1. Slide open the battery holder lid (decal side ofbattery holder) by applying gentle upwardpressure on the tab of the door so that it unlocks.Slide the door away from the battery boxexposing the cell positions.

2. Remove any old cells from the holder. Note the(+) and (-) positions of each cell and the (+)and (-) for each position marked inside the cell tray.Install new “AA” cells noting carefully the cor-rect (+) and (-) positions.

If the cells are installed incorrectly, the detectormay require service by an AuthorizedService Center.

3. Slide the door closed so that it snaps securely.

4. Insert the battery holder into the detector so thatthe decal is facing down, with the batteryholder door tab and metal contact points facingtoward the inside of the battery compartment.

Close the battery compartment door and secure thetwo latches on the bottom of the case. Hook thefront of each latch first, then press down on therear.

6. The battery will lose its charge during storage.If stored inserted in your instrument, this loss willbe more noteworthy. It is recommended that thebattery be removed from the instrument duringperiods of storage. It is not advisable to storerechargeable batteries for long periods of timewithout use. If however, storage is necessary, storewithout a charge (discharged).

7. Do not discharge the battery in devices otherthan your metal detector. Unnecessary dischargingand/or an absolute discharge will reduce battery lifeand may damage the battery. Unlike older recharge-able battery designs, the rechargeable batteryprovided with your detector can be recharged at anytime. Regardless of whether or not it already has apartial charge, memory will not occur.

8. White's has provided the leading edge of re-chargeable battery technology with your instru-ment. Disregard all advice which conflicts with theabove recommendations. Care for batteries pro-vided by other manufacturers, or with other White'smodels, may vary.

Charging 1. There is no harm charg-ing overnight using theOVERNIGHT chargesetting regardless of thebattery's current condition.However, before chargingwith the QUICK chargesetting, determine batterycondition by insertingbattery into the instrumentand turning the instrumentON. If the instrument willnot turn ON, or if voltagetests eight volts or below,charge five hours with theQUICK charge. If the battery voltage tests any othervoltage, refer to the Charging Hours chart above forproper QUICK charge time.

2. To charge, insert the charger plug into the batterypack jack, located near the plastic tab andmetal contact points.

3. Plug the charger into a standard wall outlet.(110 volts for USA models).

4. Again, the QUICK charge setting uses the abovechart for a specific charge time. OVERNIGHT isdesigned to charge the battery in as little as fourteenhours. However, no harm will come to the systemleaving it charging for several days.

5. It is normal for the battery and charger to getwarm during use. However, if either the battery orthe charger gets too hot to hold or deforms due tothe heat, discontinue use and return for testing.

Battery Life & MemoryVolatile memory temporarily holds any programchanges or settings not yet saved in a CustomProgram. Short-term or volatile memory is retainedso long as a good battery remains in the detector.To recover volatile memory immediately squeezeand release the TRIGGER once the detector isturned ON. If the battery is removed all volatilememory is lost. Long-term memory (programssaved in Custom Programs) is automatically savedfor up to ten years regardless of whether a battery isin the detector or not.

When using fresh batteries, the voltage will initiallycheck somewhere in the 10 to 14 volt area. Unlikestandard batteries, the rechargeable battery voltagewill quickly drop to between 9 and 10 volts andplateau there for most of its life. Once the recharge-able battery voltage drops below this plateau, it willquickly drop below a usable voltage level (eightvolts) and thus require a recharge. Low Battery willautomatically appear on the display when thebattery reaches eight volts.

Like a personal computer, there are times (such aslow battery conditions) when the microprocessor ofa metal detector becomes out of sequence with therest of the circuitry. This is often noted by pecu-liarities in the nondiscrimination or pinpointing(TRIGGER squeezed) modes. Symptoms may beblaring or silent non-discriminate or pinpointmodes, depth indication inaccuracies or generalabnormal operation. To correct such difficulties "re-boot" by:

1. Install a good battery.2. Turn ON wait for MAIN MENU to appear.3. Open battery door and remove battery while detector is still ON.4. Wait one minute, reinstall battery, turn detector ON, and check for proper function.

Use of maximum backlight may reduce battery lifeby up to 50%, depending on battery type.

Rechargeable batteries gradually deteriorate. Asthey age they do not provide the life-per-chargethey did when new. This is expected, and notgrounds for replacement under warranty. Addition-ally, a damaged initial cell, which is caused byovercharging with the QUICK option, is not re-placed under warranty. Only cell failure throughnormal use, or a defect due to a problem with aWhite's warranted DFX™ charger, is covered.

DFX™ Quick Start Instructions After you have assembled the DFX™ and inserted thebattery pack, follow these simple steps to starttreasure hunting!

DFX™ Quick Start

1 With the TRIGGER in the center position,press the ON/OFF control and an automaticsequence will begin.

The display will momentarily show anopening screen which lists the softwareversion.

The display then shows a battery checkscreen.

The last automatic display screen to appearis the MAIN MENU. Press the ENTERcontrol. ("BEEP" )

The Preset Program COINS will appear onthe MENU. Press ENTER . ("BEEP ")

You will be prompted to raise the searchcoil (loop) to waist level. Press ENTER .This air balances the DFX™. ("BEEP ")

Next, the ground balance prompt appearsasking you to lower the search coil (loop) tothe ground. Press ENTER. Ground mineral-ization will be balanced out. ("BEEP ")

The last screen will be the live searchscreen. You will hear the THRESHOLD"hum". Sweep the search coil over theground and listen for a solid repeatable/consistent beep, then look at the display.The icons tell what likely coin lies below.V.D.I. number/chart on top of control boxand SignaGraph® provide greater detail.Squeeze the trigger for pinpointing anddepth and it's time to dig!

Chapter 3 DFX™ QuickStart

Search Fundamentals

The loop/search coil must be in motion (sweep-ing from side-to-side) for this instrument torespond to metal. Practice a smooth sweep of theloop from side-to-side keeping the loop close to theground throughout the swing. Each pass of theloop should take approximately two secondsfrom right to left, two seconds to return from leftto right.

Walk forward slowly. Take small steps no greaterthan half normal strides. Make sure each pass of theloop overlaps the last by at least half the length ofthe loop. Do not lift the loop at the end of eachswing. Keep it close to the ground at all times.

To become comfortable with sweeping the looptakes some practice. Try to loosen up and find acomfortable grip on the handle. Premature fatiguemay result from gripping the handle too tightly,improperly adjusted rod or elbow support, andlimited body movement. Hold the handle loosely.Adjust the rod and elbow support for comfort andkeep the elbow strap loose. Use your arm, shoulderand even your back a little to allow a smooth evensweep of the loop.

Now that you're sweeping the loop smoothly over theground, you will notice that the detector starts makingsounds (beeps). Not all sounds are good targets;some trash targets also make the detector beep.

As the loop is swept over the ground, ignore thedisplay and concentrate on the sounds the detectormakes.

As the loop is passed over metal that is likely trash,the sound will be inconsistent. Trash targets typi-cally produce a shorter, sputter-type sound, that isoften broken or double in nature. Place a steel-popbottlecap on the ground. Pass the loop over itseveral times to become familiar with this sound atdifferent loop sweep speeds. Note that an aluminumtwist-off bottlecap cannot be used as it is a differ-ent type of target. Also note that very old rustybottle caps may start reading as quarters due to theelimination of the iron alloy through deterioration.Once familiar with the sound typical bottle capsproduce, an operator may pass over such targets andcontinue searching without consulting the displayinformation, saving more time for evaluatingpossible good targets.

As the loop passes over metal that is likely a goodtarget, a more consistent and smooth sound will beheard. A good target typically produces a longer,more solid sound. Place a quarter on the ground andsweep the loop over it several times to becomefamiliar with the sound of a good target.

Why Air/Ground Balance?When the display prompts you to AIR BALANCE byholding the loop at waist level and press ENTER. TheDFX™'s circuits are being prepared for ground balanc-ing by measuring temperature and other variables thataffect electronic circuits. The DFX™ "beeps" and youlower the search coil to the distance above the groundthat you will be searching. Press ENTER to have theDFX™ "cancel/track out" or GROUND BALANCEthe ground mineralization. The DFX™ then automati-cally "tracks out" the varying mineralization as youcontinue to search.

A. Sweep the loop over the target several times andlook at the SignaGraph®. The SignaGraph® auto-matically clears itself (FADE RATE) so that itdoesn't fill the screen with information from pastloop sweeps. An operator has limited time to lookat the SignaGraph®. If you want to look at theinformation again, sweep the loop over the targetseveral more times. The fading of the SignaGraph®

information can be slowed or speeded (FADERATE) to operator preference. This is completed inthe PRO OPTIONS under DISPLAY. AutomaticAVERAGING and/or ACCUMULATING ofSignaGraph® information is also available (SeePRO OPTIONS).

B. Valuable targets will show up on the positiveside of the graph. The positive area of the chart isthe section located to the right of the zero.

C. Look for consistency. In ideal conditions, coinsand jewelry produce one or two bars to the right ofzero. Trash produces several bars, sometimes onboth sides of zero.

D. In less than ideal conditions, coins may producea wider pattern of bars. Most trash targets produce arecognizably different pattern than valuable targets.

E. One of the most visual benefits of theSignaGraph® is the ability to show a smear patternon iron targets that often fool the other methods ofidentification. An iron target will likely showdefinite bars on both the negative and positive sidesof the SignaGraph®, often smearing all the wayacross the entire chart. Valuable targets should notproduce such obviously wide patterns. In very badground conditions, a good target may have a fewsmall bar segments in the negative area due tomineralization. However, the pattern will showmostly positive bars, in a fairly narrow tall group.

Pinpointing the TargetOnce the decision has been made to dig, move theloop off to one side of the target area, squeeze andhold the TRIGGER on the handle, and "X" the loopover the spot where you believe the target to be.Note that the TRIGGER also has a locked forwardposition that accomplishes the same thing assqueezing and holding it.

While the TRIGGER is being held, the loop doesn'tneed to be moving to detect the target. The loopmay be moved slowly over the area. The displaywill indicate depth in inches and will also show thestrongest reading to aid in pinpointing exactlywhere to dig. The shallowest reading on the depthdisplay, the loudest sound coming from the speaker,and the two bars lining up with each other, indicatethe center of the target. Don't forget to "X" thetarget as pinpointing cannot be accurate unless thetarget is swept from at least two different directions.Once pinpointing is complete, release the TRIG-GER, or return it to the center position.

Pinpointing takes practice. The standard loopprovided with the DFX™ is a high-powered, 9.5inch design. This harmonically tuned loop's stron-gest traits are in the detection depth and groundcoverage areas. If pinpointing becomes difficult orcritical refer to the Advanced Pinpointing Tech-niques on this page.

Advanced Pinpointing Techniques

1. Targets that are near the surface, becausethey give a wider response, are harder topinpoint than deep targets. If the trigger is heldand the loop swept over the area, you may notea shallow depth indication. Lifting the loopslightly above the ground, releasing and re-squeezing the TRIGGER and again "X" ing thetarget will aid pinpointing.

2. In the Basic Adjustments, DC Sensitivity(non-motion) directly controls the pinpointingmode. Lower DC Sensitivity settings pinpointshallow targets better.

3. In the PRO OPTIONS under AUDIO, V.C.O.(Voltage Controlled Oscillator) significantly aidspinpointing.

4. The depth reading has two indication bars.The top bar shows the current distance fromthe target, and the bottom bar shows a memoryof the strongest reading. These two bars will beeven with each other when the loop is directlyover the center of the target.

Ready to DigPermission - Prior to searching and digging youmust have permission to search private property,from the owner or caretaker.

Laws - Know the laws that apply to the area youare going to search. Laws vary a great deal with theCity, County, State, and Country, regarding the useof metal detectors. Be respectful of private prop-erty, public property, and the laws which governthe use of metal detectors.

Tools - Care must be taken to dig in a way that isfriendly to the landscape. Tools and methods vary agreat deal with the area, season, and types of targetyou are recovering. Check with your dealer forrecommended tools and methods for your area.

Trash - When searching, remove all trash youcome across. This not only makes your futuresearches of the area more productive; it promotesthe hobby of metal detecting.

Get Involved - Your dealer knows of metal detect-ing clubs and organizations which promote andprotect the hobby. A club is a great way to not onlylearn good detecting habits, but to gain permissionto search areas as a group as well as have organizedcompetition hunts.

Factory Preset ProgramsReached from the MAIN MENU, the factoryPRESET PROGRAMS give a quick start for:

Coins: general purpose settings, discriminates(rejects) most common junk items like nails, foil,pull tabs, and hot rocks; and responds to most coinsand large jewelry. Use in lawns, parks, and play-grounds where lots of trash rejection is desired.

Coin & Jewelry: less discrimination (less trashrejection), desirable because of the high degree ofvariance found in jewelry alloys. More diggingrequired. Good program for lawns, parks, andplaygrounds. Use screen in conjunction with sound.

Jewelry & Beach: similar to Coin & Jewelry, butsettings are optimized for salt water.

Relic: even less discrimination than Coin & Jewelryor Jewelry & Beach, all types of metals exceptsmall iron items like nails, and some stainless steel.Brass, lead, aluminum, as well as copper, silver,and gold all respond solidly. Ferrous (iron), such aslarge nails, weapons, and cannon ball fragmentswill also respond . Suitable for all significant targetsand separates ferrous/nonferrous by display indica-tions.

Prospecting: NO AUDIO DISCRIMINATION. Allmetals respond with beep. But V.D.I. numbersshow only for metals that could be gold. Dig onlyV.D.I. number (possibility gold) targets and avoidiron. Targets which cause an audio response, with-out causing a V.D.I. number to appear on thedisplay, are not likely to be gold nuggets. Althoughhigh-frequency gold-shooting detectors will re-spond better, this mode will offer good results forthe occasional nugget hunter by responding tonuggets in the six-grain and heavier category.

More BasicsAll the MENU items are tied together so that theARROW up and down controls scroll through everyadjustment screen. If you continue to press theARROW down you can go beyond the last BASICADJUSTMENT (View Angle) and into the PROOPTIONS. If the ARROW up control is pressedafter VOLUME, you will be scrolling backwardsthrough the options starting with the end of thePreset Programs, then the MAIN MENU, then theend of the PRO OPTIONS.

An important feature of the ARROW controls; If aBASIC ADJUSTMENT has been made (for ex-ample Volume) and the trigger has been squeezedand released to return to a search mode, you canreturn to the volume adjustment simply by pressingeither of the ARROW controls. This shortcutreturns to the last adjustment that was made therebyallowing an operator to switch directly from asearch mode to the adjustment currently being finetuned. This feature is desirable as you start usingBASIC ADJUSTMENTS or PRO OPTIONS thatare located further down the menu listings, or anyadjustment that may require some trial and error tofind the appropriate setting.

If care is taken to use a desired adjustment screenlast (just prior to squeezing and releasing the TRIG-GER for a search mode), Custom Programs can usethis ARROW RETURN feature to allow quick easyaccess to the most used feature. Use that feature(adjustment screen) last, just prior to squeezing andreleasing the TRIGGER for searching. Then duringsearching, press either ARROW to return directly tothat adjustment screen.

"Hot Key" Shortcuts"HOT KEYS" will save time as they allow easyaccess, from the search mode, to the most neededadjustments. They are painted on the bottom of thecontrol box for field reference. NOTICE: "HOTKEY" shortcuts will not function from a cold start(batteries just installed). To function from a coldstart the DFX™ must be turned on and air/groundbalanced in any mode, then turned off. "HOT KEY"shortcuts will then function.

COIN PROGRAM - Squeeze & release TRIGGERafter automatic battery check.

SCROLL OPTION - After battery check, useARROWS to scroll all the current settings /menus.

AIR/GROUND BALANCE - In search mode,press ENTER to re-Air/Ground Balance.

GROUND BALANCE ONLY - While searching,hold the TRIGGER and press ENTER.

BATTERY CHECK - While searching, hold theTRIGGER and press ARROW down. Squeeze andrelease TRIGGER to return to searching.

A. LOAD will activate a prior custom pro-gram stored in that position. After you haveSAVED or NAMED a program, you canselect LOAD and press ENTER, to use thatprogram.

B. SAVE saves your current settings in thatcustom position with either a generic name ora prior custom name you may have applied.Selecting SAVE and pressing ENTER savesthe current program.

C. NAME is the preferred method. SelectNAME and press ENTER. You may now usethe ARROW and ENTER controls to nameyour custom program. NAME automaticallySAVES, once you have chosen a name andpressed MENU.

Custom EEPROM ProgramsSaving Basic and Pro Optionadjustments for future use.Save custom settings in any one of four EEPROMprogram positions. They will remain permanently inthe DFX™ memory regardless if the machine isturned off or the battery removed. 4. To NAME, use the ARROW controls to select thefirst symbol, number, or letter of the name and pressENTER. Use the ARROW controls to select thesecond symbol, number, or letter of the name, pressENTER. And so on using up to sixteen digits. Toleave a space, use the ARROWS to select the pointwhere no symbol or letter appears and press ENTER.If you make a mistake and press ENTER when thedigit is not as you desire, simply keep pressing EN-TER until that digit is again flashing, then use theARROWs to select the correct digit and again pressENTER. It is wise to name the custom programsomething that relates to what it is used for. Forexample "TRASHY PARKS", "GHOST TOWN","NIGHT HUNT", "COMPETITION", etc. Once thename is fully assembled press MENU.

5. Once you have SAVED and pressed ENTER, orNAMED and pressed MENU, there are four directionsyou can go:

A. Squeeze and release the TRIGGER to con-tinue searching using your new custom program.

B. Press ENTER, select LOAD and pressENTER to continue searching using your newcustom program.

C. Press MENU to return to choose or develop adifferent program than what you stored.

D. Turn the detector OFF.

6. When the detector is turned back on, regardless ofwhether a battery pack was left in the detector ornot, your custom program will be ready for you to useagain and again. Simply select it, press ENTER, selectLOAD, and press ENTER again. Follow the on-screen instructions for Air/Ground Balance and thensearch.

7. If you SAVE or NAME a program, then decide youno longer want to keep it, you can replace it with anew program using the same procedure as de-

scribed above. The old program can only be erasedwhen a new program is stored in that position.

8. You can NAME a custom program and at a laterdate replace the program while maintaining thesame name. Develop the changes first to any pro-gram, then use the SAVE method which maintainsthe old name while storing the new program. Tokeep the same program with a new name, firstLOAD that custom program, Air/Ground Balance,then press MENU and go to that custom positionand press ENTER. Now select NAME and pressENTER. You can now develop a new name for theold program.

Other Custom EEPROMProgram InfoGround Balance - When a Custom Program isstored, the Ground Balance setting last used withthat program is also stored. This has advantagesparticularly for those who manually set the GroundBalance for speciality applications. The automaticAir/Ground Balance sequence will always overridemanual settings. To access the last Ground Balancesetting used with a Custom Program, first select thedesired Custom Program then press ENTER. SelectLOAD and press ENTER. Do not Air/GroundBalance as the display suggests, simply squeeze andrelease the TRIGGER. The last Ground Balancesetting will then be in use. If an appropriate Air/Ground setting is not available, the instrument willautomatically require a new Air/Ground Balance.

Return ARROW Key - The last Basic Adjustmentor Pro Option screen used is remembered by yourCustom Program. From the search mode, eitherARROW control will access the last Basic Adjust-ment or Pro Option screen used. This allows easyaccess to the most used adjustment.

5. Silent SearchThe ability of the detector to be operated withoutthe threshold or background hum that is normallyheard continuously during operation. Theinstrument is silent until a target is detected.

Select SILENT SEARCH with the ARROWcontrols and use the ENTER control to turnSILENT SEARCH ON or OFF.

To function, SILENT SEARCH requires AUDIODISC ON and MIXED MODE OFF. SILENTSEARCH "ON" will automatically override bothAUDIO DISC and MIXED MODE menuselection to perform the silent search functionregardless of your AUDIO DISC and MIXEDMODE selections. See chart on left side of thispage.

In Pro Options the Discriminate feature can beused to accept all metal targets while usingSILENT SEARCH. It is not possible to achieve anon-motion searching mode with SILENTSEARCH ON. When SILENT SEARCH is ONthe all metal pinpointing mode continues toproduce a threshold. This may not be noticed, asonce the pinpoint mode detunes for better targetcenter locating the threshold is not present.However, releasing, re-squeezing, and holding theTRIGGER with the loop at waist level a thresholdwill be noted. 6. Mixed ModeA unique hybrid operating mode. It is an all-metal(DC non-motion, non-discriminate) mode,working simultaneously with a discriminate (ACmotion discrimination) mode. It is two modes, onedetecting everything and another discriminating,operating at the same time.

Select MIXED MODE with the ARROW controls,press ENTER control to turn MIXED MODE ONor OFF.

AUDIO DISC needs to be ON and SILENTSearch needs to be OFF, for MIXED MODE toperform properly. See chart on (page 20). MIXEDMODE ON will automatically override AUDIODISC selections to perform the MIXED MODEfunction.

When Mixed Mode is on, all types of metals willproduce a sound (beep).

Discrimination Channel - When the loop is inmotion, targets accepted by the discriminateprogram will produce a high-pitched beep. Targetsrejected by the discriminate program will producea lower pitched beep. High-pitched or low-pitchedbeeps are directly determined by thediscrimination settings. An operator can selectdiscriminate settings through the selection of anentire Program or by adjusting the accept andreject V.D.I. numbers in the Pro Options underDiscrimination (EDIT).

All-Metal Channel -When the loop is not inmotion, or moved slowly, all types of targets willproduce the same low-pitch beep. All-metalchannel will by nature detect deeper than thediscrimination channel. Deeper targets willproduce a lower volume sound when the loop ismoved slowly over the area.

9. BacklightUsed in dark conditions to light the display,improving visibility.

Select BACKLIGHT with the ARROW controlsand press ENTER. Use the ARROW controls toselect the desired BACKLIGHT level. TheBACKLIGHT level will be visible on the display.The current level is shown on the right side of thedisplay. The graphic control knob shows therelationship of the current setting to minimum andmaximum levels. Minimum is 0 (no light). Themaximum backlight setting will reduce battery lifeby as much as 50% depending on the type ofbatteries and how long it is used. LowerBACKLIGHT settings will have significantly lessdrain on battery life.

When the detector is first turned on, it is normalfor the backlight to be on during the openingdisplay and BATTERY CHECK. If theBACKLIGHT is off, it will fade when the MAINMENU display appears. If the BACKLIGHT isON, it will continue until turned off manually or adifferent program is selected. BACKLIGHT canbe saved as part of a custom program, for examplea NIGHT HUNT program.

When Backlight is ON and the TRIGGER issqueezed and released to begin searching,"BACKLIGHT ON" will appear continually onthe display to warn you of the extra battery duty.

EMERGENCY BACKLIGHT - If in the darkyou cannot see the display to turn theBACKLIGHT on, holding the TRIGGER andpressing MENU will bring up the BACKLIGHTadjustment screen. Release the TRIGGER andpress ARROW up to select a level you can see thedisplay. Squeeze and release the TRIGGER tocontinue.

10. Viewing AngleAdjusts the display for visibility in low or hightemperature conditions.

Select VIEWING ANGLE with the ARROWcontrols and press ENTER, use the ARROWcontrols to make changes. The current level isshown on the right side of the display. The graphiccontrol knob indicates the relationship of thecurrent setting to minimum and maximum levels.Squeeze and release the TRIGGER to resumesearching.

VIEWING ANGLE has no impact on battery life.

EMERGENCY VIEWING ANGLE PROCE-DURE- If your detector has been in the cold orheat prior to use, you may not be able to see thedisplay to adjust VIEWING ANGLE. Press theON/OFF control, hold the TRIGGER and pressARROW up. You can then use the ARROWcontrols to find a VIEWING ANGLE level thatallows you to read the display. Squeeze andrelease the TRIGGER to begin searching. Like theBACKLIGHT, you will lose your custom VIEW-ING ANGLE setting if you change Programs.You may need to use the EMERGENCY VIEW-ING ANGLE PROCEDURE to see the display.Select the program you desire, use the ENTERcontrol to enter, Air/Ground Balance, then againuse the EMERGENCY VIEWING ANGLEPROCEDURE if the display is unreadable.VIEWING ANGLE is preset at average levels inthe factory preset programs. Basics of Pro OptionsThe PRO OPTIONS are used to make the moreintricate adjustments available on this model. ThePRO OPTIONS are divided into five major catego-ries of menus, structured similar to the BasicAdjustments. Methods of entry, adjustment, exit,and reentry remain the same.

To enter the PRO OPTIONS from a search mode,press MENU and the MAIN MENU will appear.Use the ARROW controls to select PRO OPTIONSand press ENTER. The PRO OPTIONS menu willappear on the display. There are two pages to thePRO OPTIONS menu (PG. 1/2 Page one of two).

The ARROW controls are then used to select thedesired PRO OPTION category.

The six major categories have options specific totheir titles. For example, all the options underAUDIO have to do with the way the audio circuitsof the instrument behave. Once a category has beenselected and the ENTER control pressed, theARROW controls can then be used to scrollthrough all the options even beyond that categoryi.e., beyond PRO OPTIONS, back to PRESETPROGRAMS, and BASIC ADJUSTMENTS. Thecategories will only reappear if MENU is againpressed, or at specific times during scrolling (tooffer short cuts).

From this point forward, we will assume that youknow how to use the MENU control, the ArrowControls to make a selection, the ENTER control toenter or select that option, the Arrow Controls tomake adjustments, and the MENU to exit. Remem-ber, squeezing and releasing the trigger returns to asearch mode. Arrow Controls can be used to returnfrom the search mode to the last menu or adjust-ment display used.

1. Ratchet PinpointingPinpointing feature, automatically detunes for easytarget-center locating.

ON - Automatically aids in pinpointing. When theTRIGGER is squeezed and held for pinpointing,RATCHET PINPOINTING will shrink the size ofthe signal as the loop is passed over the target areaseveral times. The signal will not fade completelyunless the loop is moved too far away from thetarget center.

OFF - When OFF, the signal will remain originalsize giving some indication of its size and shape.Manual shrinking is completed by squeezing andreleasing the TRIGGER several times as the loop ispassed over the target. Manual shrinking cancompletely eliminate the target. If the target nolonger responds after manual shrinking, move theloop away from the target, squeeze and release theTRIGGER, and again sweep the loop over the area.If the target is a metal, it should again respond.

2. S.A.T. SpeedSelf-Adjusting Threshold (auto-tune) smooths theTHRESHOLD, OFF (0), or ON (1-10).

Without S.A.T. SPEED (a setting of 0), changes inthe ground (and the passage of time) will tend toproduce changes in the THRESHOLD sound. TheTRIGGER will have to be squeezed and releasedrepeatedly to maintain the THRESHOLD. This isparticularly noticeable in non-discriminate modes,although S.A.T. SPEED will also tend to addstability to discriminate modes. S.A.T. SPEEDs 1through 10 will automatically correct for suchTHRESHOLD changes.

S.A.T. (auto-tune) is a feature that has been usedon metal detectors dating back to the 1970's. Itadds a loop-motion requirement to modes whichare ordinarily non-motion. It is also known toproduce some variations in the responses to hotrocks (rocks more mineralized than the surround-ing ground) which change with different speedselections.

Only enough S.A.T. SPEED required to maintainstability is recommended. Typically normal coinsearching requires slower (lower number) speeds,beach hunting and relic hunting require slightlyfaster speeds (higher numbers), and prospectingrequires the fastest settings (highest numbers).

3. Tone I.D.Assigns each V.D.I. number its own distinct toneor pitch. Target ranges can easily be identified bytheir sound. The higher the V.D.I. number, thehigher the pitch of their sound. Reject targets stillbreak up or "cutout".

Tone I.D. is used in the discriminate or motionmodes. When ON, each V.D.I. target number hasits own audio frequency or pitch (191 differentpitches). The higher the V.D.I. number, the higherthe pitch. Where a target indicates on the V.D.I.scale can be immediately recognized. The soundthat rejected targets produce will still be canceledor modified (broken up) by the discriminate circuit.

The 191 different pitches or tones activated withTONE I.D. cannot be adjusted as to their pitch.Each V.D.I. number's sound is predetermined bythe factory and is not adjustable, nor will they shiftwith TONE (AUDIO FREQUENCY) adjustments.

4. V.C.O.Voltage Controlled Oscillator produces a higherpitched tone the stronger the target becomes.

Voltage Controlled Oscillator is a feature that willonly work in the non-discriminate modes. When itis ON, the stronger the response the higher thepitch of the sound. An excellent aid in pinpointing,V.C.O. will only function when the trigger issqueezed for pinpointing when activated in a dis-criminate mode. It will function full time in thenon-discriminate (ALL-METAL) modes.

D.C. SENSITIVITY settings will dramaticallychange the performance of V.C.O. D.C. SENSI-TIVITY settings above a level of 35 may peak theaudio pitch too soon to allow V.C.O. to be useful.D.C. SENSITIVITY settings of 35 or below (lowernumbers) are recommended, particularly in trashyareas where targets are close to each other.

5. Modulation Allows motion modes to produce different volumelevels based on target depth.

Modulation is used in the discriminate or motionmodes. When ON, it allows the depth of the targetto dictate the volume of the response. 8. Trac SpeedDictates when AUTOTRAC® adjusts GroundBalance.

Trac Speed allows adjustment of the amount ofground mineral change required to causeAutotracking to occur. At slower speeds (lowernumbers) it takes a significant change in theground to cause tracking to occur. At faster speeds(higher numbers) it takes very little change in theground mineral to cause tracking to occur. The endresult, more tracking occurs at higher numbers thanat lower numbers. Too much tracking can causeerrors in the ground balance setting. Not enoughtracking can result in the ground balance settingnever catching up with changing ground. TRACVIEW is used to see how much tracking is occur-ring. Generally, a faster (higher number) TRACSPEED is needed for more consistent groundconditions. Slower TRAC SPEEDS (lower num-bers) is needed for more inconsistent groundconditions. "TRACK" appearing every three to fivesweeps of the loop is the ideal setting when theground conditions will allow.

9. Trac OffsetAllows AUTOTRAC® to track ground mineralseither positive or negative in relationship to thecorrect setting (under, or over kill).

TRAC OFFSET allows the AUTOTRAC® featureto track the ground slightly more or less than whatwould normally be considered perfect, mostly forexperts that prefer a slight offset.

A slightly positive offset can be used to enhancethe responses of small metals (gold nuggets) inhighly-mineralized ground. Positive is indicated bya slight increase in threshold as the loop ap-proaches the ground in the all-metal mode. Dis-crimination and depth may also be improved.

A negative offset may be used to eliminate particu-larly troublesome "hot rocks" in areas that areotherwise difficult to search. Negative offset isindicated by a loss or slight decrease in the thresh-old as the loop approaches the ground in the all-metal mode.

11. Coarse G.E.B.(Manual Ground Balance) allows viewing thecurrent automatic Ground Balance setting (Air/Ground Balance) and/or manual overriding of theautomatic Ground Balance.

COARSE & FINE G.E.B. (Ground ExclusionBalance, or ground rejection) allows manualoverride of the automatic balancing features toselect a specific Ground Balance setting.COARSE allows major adjustments. FINE allowsminor adjustments near the COARSE setting.

Before attempting manual Ground Balance adjust-ments, turn off AUTOTRAC® since it will alter anymanual changes you make. Manual Ground Balancewill begin at the setting selected by the automatic(Air/Ground Balance) sequence. An Automatic Air/Ground Balance performed after manual adjustmentwill cancel the manual setting. To maintain a manualsetting, the Automatic Air/Ground sequence must beavoided by squeezing and releasing the TRIGGERwhen, and if, the Air Balance instruction appears. AirBalance instructions may appear during Basic Adjust-ment or Pro Options selections following the manualadjustment.

When manually adjusting the Ground Balance, it isnecessary to make an adjustment in COARSE and/or FINE, then squeeze and release the TRIGGER.The TRIGGER can be held in, and the loop low-ered and lifted over the ground to check for achange in sound which would indicate imperfectGround Balance. To return to the Ground Balancedisplay for further adjustment, press either of theARROW controls. 12. Fine G.E.B.FINE G.E.B. is used to make smaller adjustmentsto the Ground Balance range on either side of theCOARSE setting. The FINE setting combines withthe COARSE setting to determine the actualground rejection level. To determine exactly whatlevel the automatic Air/Ground sequence selected,it is necessary to check both COARSE and FINElevels.

Manual Ground Balance will rarely be used forperfect balancing as the automatic balance isextremely reliable. It is generally used to offsetGround Balance for the same reasons AUTOTRAC® OFFSET is used.

In COARSE or FINE, lower numbers indicate aGround Balance setting toward the negative side ofthe V.D.I. scale (iron). Larger numbers indicate aGround Balance setting toward the positive side ofthe V.D.I. chart (salt). Bad ground conditions(high mineralization) may be described as eithermagnetic (negative or low numbers) or conductive(positive or high numbers). COARSE and FINEsettings of 0 represent a ground rejection similar toa V.D.I. number of -95. COARSE and FINEsettings of 255 represent a ground rejection levelsimilar to a V.D.I. number of +10. This V.D.I.range from -95 to +10 represents the ground rejec-tion range of this instrument. If ground balance(either automatic or manual) occurs near the 255COARSE setting, significant loss in sensitivity canbe expected to targets which indicate in the V.D.I.number range of 1 to 10. However, manual groundbalance doesn't exactly work like a discriminator,where V.D.I. numbers are simply REJECTED.The actual phase of Ground Balance is out ofsequence with most targets; thus some responseswill occur even if COARSE & FINE G.E.B. arematched exactly to a particular targets V.D.I.number.

If you make EDIT changes in Coin, andthen switch to COIN & JEWELRY, you lose allediting you completed in the Coin Program. of targets it cannot readily identify. Therefore, ifpositive +95 is ACCEPTed, questionable targetsmay be dug that indicate this number and canproduce some interesting recoveries. A good tipregarding positive +95: If a target indicates 95,and the depth display indicates it as being fairlydeep; dig it. If the depth display indicates it asbeing fairly shallow, it is more likely to be trash ora hot rock. HOT ROCK REJECT in the Pro Optionshas 20 levels available for the acceptance or rejec-tion of +95. An operator can adjust HOT ROCKREJECTION to suit personal preference and areademands. (See page 42.)

The first 30 to 40 negative numbers below zero alsoimpact detection depth. Most iron indicates furtherinto the negative numbers. Thus the first 30 to 40negative numbers can often be ACCEPTed withoutdigging much iron. ACCEPTing from the positivenumbers down as low as minus 30 to 40 has thelargest impact on the lower end of the positivenumbers. Sensitivity to small jewelry is increased.However, sensitivity to foil is also increased. On abeach or in a park that has lots of small foil,ACCEPTing down to minus 30 to 40 may not bepractical. While ACCEPTing these minus numbers,a reduced sensitivity setting may help eliminatesome of these small bits of unwanted foil.

ACCEPTing all V.D.I. numbers will produce thebest overall detection depth however, with theamount of trash in most areas, searching with norejection is seldom practical. TONE I.D. is a morepractical choice. The idea of discrimination is toACCEPT V.D.I. numbers most likely to be valu-ables and to REJECT the V.D.I. numbers mostlikely to be trash. Digging ease, and acceptability inan area will also decide the amount of ACCEPTedV.D.I. numbers desired. No metal detector canreject all trash while accepting all valuables. The

deeper you want to detect, the more trash you willneed to accept and dig.

The detector sees metals electronically; thus somevaluable and non-valuable targets may look identi-cal to the detector. To select ACCEPT and RE-JECT V.D.I. numbers is to gamble that the areasyou select for ACCEPT will be good targets, andthe area you select for REJECT will be trashtargets. A factory program which uses the law ofaverages usually produces more good targets thantrash. The EDIT feature allows you to fine-tune theACCEPT and REJECT settings for your area andtypes of desired targets, further improving theseodds.

Select BLOCK EDIT with the ARROW controlsand press ENTER. The ENTER control can beused to select either ACCEPT or REJECT. TheARROW controls can then be used to drag thatACCEPT or REJECT status as far as desiredthrough the V.D.I. number range. When a V.D.I.number or range of numbers appear that you wantset differently, stop dragging with the ARROWs,press ENTER to change the ACCEPT/REJECTstatus, and then drag that new status as far as youdesire. Iron alloys, such as steel bottle caps ornails, should never be used for thisLEARN method of programming. Be-cause of their inconsistent V.D.I. indica-tions, iron alloys tend to scatter or other-wise confuse the discriminate program.If this occurs, it is best to turn the detec-tor OFF, back ON, and re-ENTER thedesired Program to return to the originalfactory preset discriminate settings.

CAUTION

As with EDIT, LEARN changes will only betemporary until saved in a Custom Program.

17. Recovery SpeedSpeeds target responses, so several targets that areclose together can each respond.

When a metal is detected, it takes a fraction of asecond for the detector to process the signal beforeit can respond to another metal target nearby. Thetime it takes to process the first metal target signalso that the second metal target signal can respondis called RECOVERY SPEED.

There are advantages and disadvantages to fast(high numbers) and slow (low numbers) RECOV-ERY SPEEDS. Faster RECOVERY SPEEDs workwell in high trash areas. However, they will havesome difficulties with very deep targets as well asdouble responses on shallow targets. SlowerRECOVERY SPEEDs do not work very well inhigh trash areas. However, they will have betterresponses on very deep targets. Slower speeds alsohave more definitive discrimination sounds. Acustom setting needs to be found that suits thepreferences of the individual and the conditions inthe area. As a general rule, the closer together themetal targets are in an area, the faster the recoveryspeed should be. The more spacing between tar-gets, the slower the speed should be. Don't use thefast speed if you don't need to.

Sweep speed (page 43) and more significantly,Ground Filtering adjustments (page 44) will alsodramatically improve or degrade performance inhigh trash.

18. Bottlecap RejectAdjusts how strongly the instrument rejects orbreaks up on iron.

Most starting programs use the minimum setting.As larger numbers are selected, more bias rejectionagainst iron occurs.

The advantage of higher BOTTLECAP REJECTsettings is that in high-trash areas more decisiveiron rejection occurs. Trash becomes easier toidentify by the broken sounds they produce.

The disadvantage of a high Bottlecap Rejectionsetting is if an iron target is close to a good metal,the high degree of bias against iron may cause thedetector to cancel both responses. Another disad-vantage is that all targets, iron and non-iron, tend tostart sounding more broken at high levels ofBOTTLECAP REJECT. The operator needs tofine tune BOTTLECAP REJECT according to theirpreferences and the conditions being searched.

Some ground conditions make it difficult for theinstrument to recognize iron. BOTTLECAP RE-JECT allows compensation for these areas.

Tips - Hot Rocks are oftendescribed or categorized aseither negative/magnetic(cold rock) or positive/conductive (hot rock).Typically a negative ormagnetic “cold rock” willrespond in the searchmode, however, once thetrigger is squeezed forpinpointing it ceases torespond. A positive orconductive “hot rock” willcontinue to respond duringpinpointing.

If hot rocks are a problemin the area being searched,in most cases a HOTROCK REJECT setting canbe found that will minimizetheir target like responsescompared to real metaltarget responses in the +95category. Settings from1 - 20 are available.

Hot rocks (rocks higher or different in mineraliza-tion than the surrounding ground) respond as +95on the V.D.I. scale. Unfortunately in some groundconditions very deep, small, or unusual real metaltargets may also indicate +95. In the past an opera-tor would either accept +95 with the DISC EDITfeature and hear hot rocks as a target response“beep”, or reject +95 and not hear a target likeresponse from + 95 target types.

The HOT ROCK REJECT features allows a com-promise between total rejection or total acceptanceof the + 95 V.D.I. indication. Disc Edit Accept orReject of +95 will only control the visual displayingof +95 with the Visual Discrimination feature ON.To reject or accept +95 with the audio discrimina-tion, Audio DISC must be on, and the HOT ROCKREJECT feature adjusted for your preference-regarding +95.

A HOT ROCK REJECT range of 0 to 20 is pro-vided. At 0 the same characteristics can be expectedas EDIT ACCEPT +95 has provided with pastWhite’s models. At 20 the same characteristics canbe expected as EDIT REJECT +95 provided withpast White’s models.

At 10 a compromise between accepting +95 andrejecting +95 is achieved. A hot rock may or maynot produce a target like response depending uponmany factors such as the actual size of the hot rock,degree of difference between the hot rock’s mineral-ization and the surrounding ground, the currentground balance setting, and the Sensitivity/Gainsettings.

Hot Rock Reject provides for 19 shades of graybetween totally accepting all hot rocks (0), andtotally rejecting all hot rocks (20).

Typically high trash areas,or older areas that deservea slower more methodicalsearch, are ideal for slowerloop sweep speeds.Settings from 1 - 20 areavailable.

The quickness the loop or search coil is passed fromside to side is critical for modern metal detectors toperform properly regarding detection depth anddiscrimination. Sweep Speed is often a personalpreference feature. Individuals may like or dislike aparticular model based on it’s required ideal sweepspeed. Additionally an individual may prefer aquicker sweep speed for a particular area or type ofsearching and a slower sweep speed for anotherarea or type of searching. Most metal detector’ssweep speed is designed into the electrical circuitand not adjustable.

The SWEEP SPEED of the DFX is adjustable in allsettings except a GROUND FILTER setting of 2. AGROUND FILTER setting of 2 has a fixed (notadjustable) sweep speed.

An adjustment range from 1 to 20 is available. 1 isthe slowest ideal (best performing) loop or searchcoil sweep speed, 20 is the quickest ideal (bestperformance) sweep speed.

SWEEP SPEED regulates the ideal (best perfor-mance) loop sweep speed by controlling the widthof the target signal the detectors electronic circuitsamples or analyzes. By expanding the samplewindow (lower number settings) a slower loopsweep speed becomes ideal. By narrowing thesample window (higher number settings) a quickerloop sweep speed becomes ideal.

RECOVERY SPEED is highly interactive withSWEEP SPEED and GROUND FILTERING.Generally faster RECOVERY SPEEDS are bettersuited to faster SWEEP SPEEDS. Generally SlowerRECOVERY SPEEDS are better suited to slowerSWEEP SPEEDS. GROUND FILTERING addsnew dimensions to these features. SWEEP SPEED,RECOVERY SPEED, and GROUND FILTERINGall have a dramatic effect on the way the discrimi-nation responds to both trash and valued metalalloys.

GROUND FILTERING is adjustable with theDFX. The first two primary filters are containedwithin the hardware (electrical parts). The remain-ing filters are contained within the computer soft-ware allowing full user adjustment.

The DFX GROUND FILTERING has an adjust-ment range from 2 through 6. At a setting of 2SWEEP SPEED is not adjustable (fixed).

Selection of 2 filters allows for the best perfor-mance in high trash areas of medium to low groundmineralization. Combined with the RECOVERYSPEED, and BOTTLECAP REJECTION the DFXwill pull some good targets from previously heavyhunted high trash areas.

Selection of 3 filters will allow for better depthperformance than 2 in slightly higher ground miner-alization.

Selection of 4 filters allows for the traditional highend White’s filtering ideal for medium to highmineralized ground.

Selection of 5 or 6 filters allows for new levels offiltering for extreme ground conditions. Althoughsome models have been described as having 6filters in the past, two of those six were dedicated tovisual indications alone. The DFX 6 filter selectiondedicates all six to ground rejection, discrimination,and audio detection. For those who search extrememineralized ground conditions the DFX with itsmultifrequency salt/conductive mineral cancelationand new levels of ground filtration will provide forperformance levels never before available.

24. V.D.I. SensitivityControls how strong a target must respond toproduce a display indication, and controls a thirddigit (fraction) of the V.D.I. number.

V.D.I. Sensitivity controls the intensity (strength)of the target signal needed to activate the displayindications. A low V.D.I. Sensitivity setting wouldrequire a strong target signal to trigger the displayindications. A higher V.D.I. Sensitivity settingwould require very little target signal to trigger thedisplay indications.

To provide greater specific target resolution, levelsof 86 and above will provide a third V.D.I. digit(.0) to better evaluate targets. During EDIT onlythe first two digits can be programmed ACCEPT orREJECT.

As with all sensitivity levels, if set too high for thearea, the detector will become unstable and thedisplay indications unreliable.

Low ground mineralization is typically a goodindication that high V.D.I. sensitivity settings areappropriate. Heavy mineralization or electricalinterference are conditions where a lower V.D.I.Sensitivity setting is appropriate.

This feature is designed to allow adjustment of thedisplay stability. However, because theinstrument's display and audio tone are closelyassociated in many of the audio modes, the V.D.I.Sensitivity may increase or decrease overall audiosensitivity.

25. D.C. PhaseMeasurement of the ground mineralization, ormeasuring the phase (V.D.I. reference number) of aspecific metal target during pinpointing.

When D.C. PHASE is ON, and the TRIGGERsqueezed and released, normal searching begins.When a target is located, or when the operatorwants to measure a target or the ground, the TRIG-GER is squeezed and held as if to pinpoint. Whenthe loop is held stationary over the target or ground,the D.C. PHASE is shown on the upper-right sideof the display. The depth reading can be used tohelp center the loop over a target for more accurateindications. The audio tone will also assist incentering the loop over the target.

Metal targets in the ground will produce a measure-ment which represents the target indication ± theground measurement. To measure the target alone,move the loop off to one side (being sure to holdthe loop directly on top of the ground mineral), andrelease and re-squeeze the trigger. Then move theloop back over the target. This should allow aproper D.C. PHASE reading for the target alone.

The relationship between D.C. PHASE, GroundBalance, V.D.I. number and Discrimination iscomplex. Results are not always repeatable invaried ground conditions. Ground and target re-sponses can distort the detection field of the loop ina number of ways, by bending, reflecting, absorbingand thus altering the phase and amplitude thedetector measures. This in turn produces inconsis-tencies in the relationships of these features.

When considering specific numbers it is importantto know D.C. phase is provided by the 15 kHzchannel without normalization. The V.D.I. scale isdistorted/expanded in the lower end of the scale(foil/nickel) and compressed in te higher end of thescale (copper/silver).

The D.C. Phase of the ground has a relationshipto the proper Ground Balance setting. This is ofparticular interest to those who use the optionalCOARSE or FINE G.E.B. (Manual GroundBalance). Manual Ground Balance has a rangethat covers V.D.I. numbers from -95 - +10. AManual Ground Balance Coarse setting of 0equals a D.C. PHASE of negative -95. A Coarsesetting of 255 equals a D.C. Phase of +10. Asmentioned under COARSE and FINE G.E.B.,Ground Balance is not the same as EDITingthese V.D.I. numbers for REJECT. However, ifyour ground measures -90, ACCEPTingV.D.I. -90 will produce operational problems asthe detector will see the ground as a target. PREAMP GAIN (called Signal Balance on somemodels) is used to promote stability and perfor-mance. Like a sensitivity control, too muchPREAMP GAIN will result in unstable operationand unreliable indications. Unlike a sensitivitycontrol, PREAMP GAIN will have a substantialeffect on OVERLOAD.

For maximum detection depth, fine tune thePREAMP GAIN to the highest number settingwithout causing OVERLOAD, and/or unstableoperation. More adjustment levels (range) areavailable than what may be usable. You may neverencounter an area where maximum PREAMPGAIN can be used. Electrical interference maymake it difficult to receive an Air Balance at highPREAMP GAIN settings.

Selections such as MIXED MODE or AUDIODISC OFF may not allow as high a PREAMPGAIN level as other selections. This is normal assome of these modes naturally see more targets andground, and they may still provide superior perfor-mance and depth even with the lower PREAMPGAIN selection.

Every time the PREAMP GAIN level is changed,the detector should be re-ground balanced. Once inan operating mode, simply press ENTER to re-ground balance.

Tips - Higher levelsincrease detection depth.However, the detectormust be stable to be ableto recognize a target.OVERLOAD should notappear on the displaywhen only ground miner-als are present. Settingsfrom 1 - 4 are available.

Transmits and processes data continuously at both 3kHz and 15 kHz (salt eliminated). Compares data at3 kHz and 15 kHz. Target signals that do not pro-vide reasonably predictable information at both 3kHz and 15 kHz are automatically rejected. Irontypically doesn’t compare predictably betweenfrequencies and thus improved iron rejection can beexpected with the use of Correlate.

Differences in the target signal at 3 kHz and 15 kHzare predictable regarding valued metal alloys suchas gold, copper silver, etc.. If the two signals do notmatch within a reasonable range of predictability,most likely the target is not a valued metal andtherefore is rejected.

Multi Frequency MethodOnly one of the four available multifrequencymethods, BEST DATA, CORRELATE, 1 kHz,and 15 kHz, can be "ON" at any one given time.For example if BEST DATA is "ON", the re-maining three multifrequency options are auto-matically "OFF". To turn BEST DATA "OFF",requires the selection of one of the three remain-ing methods. In other words, an operator neverturns "OFF" a multifrequency method, theysimply select the desired method and turn it"ON", all other methods are automaticallyturned "OFF."

The MULTI FREQUENCY selection in useappears continuously on the bottom of the LCDdisplay during searching. The ideal multi fre-quency or single frequency setting will dependon many different factors such as the amount,degree, and type, of ground mineralization, thetypes of metal alloys most desired, as well aspersonal preferences. No one setting will beideal for all situations. A user should first trustthe factory preset settings for the general typesof searching and then experiment to find themost ideal settings for that particular area andtype of search. Generally multi frequencysettings are better suited to areas that have bothmagnetic (iron) and conductive (salt) compo-nents. Inland areas may vary in this regard withthe soils moisture content. For example dry soilmay present mostly iron type characteristicspossibly making one of the single frequencymodes a better choice. The same area when thesoil is wet may exhibit conditions similar to acombination of both iron and salt due to nonfer-rous metallic type mineralization’s greaterelectrical activity when wet. For example soilscontaining silver, copper, or nickel oxides/nitrates react differently in conditions from wetto dry. These soil traits can occur naturally andare typical of areas with mineral springs orvolcanic origins. However, be particularly awareof this wet/dry phenomena in farming areaswhere the soil mineralization is likely altered foragricultural purposes.

Factory Pre-Loaded CustomEEPROM Programs

White’s has pre-loaded each of the four customEEPROM Program positions for you. These pro-grams can be erased simply by developing yourown program, starting with any of the nine avail-able programs, and using the SAVE or NAMEfeature (pages 16-17).

The first five Factory Preset Programs are burnt intopermanent memory EPROM (Electronic, Program-mable, Read, Only, Memory). Although you canmake changes to these programs while in use, andyou can modify and copy/save them to theEEPROM positions for future use through batterychanges, the Factory Preset Programs will alwaysrevert to their original factory settings. Only theprograms saved in one of the four availableEEPROM positions will save through batterychanges.

Short term memory recall (ON and squeeze andrelease the trigger) will maintain changes to afactory program if a good battery remains in theunit. To assure you retain special settings it isadvised to Save or Name them in one of theEEPROM positions. Once you modify and Save/Name a factory program to one of the EEPROMpositions it is no longer a Factory Preset Programand thus will save for future use.

EEPROM stands for a special type of electronicmemory chip (Electrical, Erasable, Programmable,Read, Only, Memory). This memory chip allows theuser to store up to four of their own programs forfuture use through battery changes and storage.

To use a custom EEPROM Program Simply;1. Turn the detector ON and wait for the

Main Menu.2. Press ENTER to enter the Preset programs.3. Use ARROW DOWN to scroll down the

Preset Program pages/screens until you seethecursor beside the EEPROM programyou desire.

4. Press ENTER.5. Press ENTER again to LOAD the program.6. Air/Ground Balance and your ready to search

using the program stored in that position.

To store the current settings you are using do thesame thing only instead of LOAD, select SAVE orNAME. LOAD it when you want to use thosesettings again. Save or Name if you want to savethe DFX’s current settings.

The idea is that once you have determined yourpreferences for the particular features and settings,you can store that entire program in one of theEEPROM positions and have it ready for usewhenever you desire, without having to go throughall the options. Save your settings for future turn onand go use.

If for any reason you should sell your Spectrum DFX™ prior to the date the warrantyexpires, the remaining warranty is transferable. This transfer is authorized by calling 1-800-547-6911, and getting an Authorization Number.

If within two years (24 months) from the original date of purchase, your White's detector fails dueto defects in either material or workmanship, White's will repair or replace at its option, all necessary partswithout charge for parts or labor.

Simply return the complete detector to the Dealer where you purchased it, or to your nearestAuthorized Service Center. The unit must be accompanied by a detailed explanation of the symptoms ofthe failure. You must provide proof of date-of-purchase before the unit is serviced.

This is a transferable manufacturer warranty, which covers the instrument two years from theoriginal purchase date, regardless of the owner.

Items excluded from the warranty are non-rechargeable batteries, accessories that are not standardequipment, shipping/handling costs outside the continental USA, Special Delivery costs (Air Freight, NextDay, 2nd Day, Packaging Services, etc.) and all shipping/handling costs inside the continental USA 90days after purchase.

White's registers your purchase only if the Sales Registration Card is filled out and returned to thefactory address soon after original purchase for the purpose of recording this information, and keeping youup-to-date regarding White's ongoing research & development.

The warranty does not cover damage caused by accident, misuse, neglect, alterations,modifications, unauthorized service, or prolonged exposure to corrosive compounds, including salt.

Duration of any implied warranty (e.g., merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose) shallnot be longer than the stated warranty. Neither the manufacturer or the retailer shall be liable for anyincidental or consequential damages. Some states however, do not allow the limitation on the length ofimplied warranties, or the exclusion of incidental or consequential damages. Therefore, the abovelimitations may not apply to you.

In addition, the stated warranty gives you specific legal rights, and you may have other rightswhich vary from state-to-state.

The foregoing is the only warranty provided by White's as the manufacturer of your metal detector.Any "extended warranty" period beyond two years, which may be provided by a Dealer or other thirdparty on your detector, may be without White's authority, involvement and consent, and might not behonored by White's.
